This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's entry-level car gets new colors, new interior fabrics and revised options. An AM/FM stereo with cassette is now standard on the Escort SE. An interior trunk release is now standard on all models. The sedans and wagon get all-door remote keyless entry added to their standard equipment lists. An integrated child seat is no longer available.

Pros:
  • Economical, loaded with features, and frugal at the gas pump. ZX2 coupe offers surprising performance.
Cons:
  • Sedan and wagon are not too pretty, ZX2 is downright funky.

  • GREAT WHILE UNDER WARRANTY - 1999 Ford Escort

My 1999 ZX2 was great while it was under warranty.. Just after that ran out I had to repair my air conditoner. Then about 8000 miles after that I had to fix the wheel bearing. Now 7000 miles later I hear a noise in the front end. Still need to get that looked at. I have loved the car up till now. Still looks great. The ride has always been nice(if you only have one passenger with you and no babiew to try to get into a car seat).

  • Not bad - 1999 Ford Escort

I bought my Escort from a couple who wanted a newer car. It had high miles for the year, but didnt look bad at all. Ive had Escorts and other Fords before and this car has been the best one for me to drive. Body looks good, inside fits 1 adult, 2 kids and a big dog pretty good. I had a few problems with it, such as the brakes, and now Im told something is broken in the engine, but that little car still moves. Has always been good on gas, and the only time it left me stranded was when I got a dead battery. I drove this car hard. I live in a hilly region and I tend to lay on the gas. The tranny is good, its just that some mounting thing in the engine is broke, so the car can take a beating.

  • She runs like a champ, no matter what - 1999 Ford Escort

I purchased my used ZX2 about 2 years ago, with 58,000 miles on the clock. Since then, shes only let me down once, and that was because I hadnt performed a regular maintenance item. The timing belt slipped so it wouldnt run, took it to a shop who didnt know what they were doing and they told me my cold air intake and header were why she wouldnt idle (at ALL). Well, they were wrong, the timing was still off. For a year, shes been running with bad timing and she runs like a champ, well, to a certain degree. As soon as I fix the timing (myself!), Im positive shell be back to her old zippy, fun self. Please, please buy one of these cars, you wont regret it.

  • reliable ride but not fun to drive - 1999 Ford Escort

Overall it has been a good, sturdy car. It rides very smoothly and has great visibility. Excellent turning radius and not bulky to drive. A few things to consider before you buy is that it is not made for a small person. The seats dont adjust higher and sit very low. Even with the steering wheel tilted as far down as possible I still feel like the air bag will explode in my face. It is very sluggish to accelerate. In the dark it is almost impossible to find where to put it in drive without putting the ceiling light on. Also, you cant get a CD player for less than $250 due to the integration of the radio and the other controls.

  • Excellent Commuter Car - 1999 Ford Escort

Just got this car not too long ago but it has been in the family for about 3 years. I dont really have to do anything with it besides change the fluids and get new brakes ... just normal wear and tear. The car has about 78K on it and I expect another 100K more at least. The tranny sometimes shifts rough and it idles shaky but I heard those are normal Escort traits. It gets great gas mileage and is quite comfortable to ride in and also handles a lot better than most other small cars. I had a 96 Escort and this generation seems worlds better. I dont know why people are running out and getting Japanese cars, Id take my little Scort over a Corolla or Civic any day. The build quality is great.

This was my first car that I bought. I really like it but seem to always have a problem with it. It has always gotten me from here to there.

  • So far, so good! - 1999 Ford Escort

Sporty, quick car thats fun to drive! I bought my ZX2 with 30,000 miles in 2001 for $8K. I have put 90,000 more miles on it in 4 years. This car gets great gas mileage on the highway… my best was 39 mpg. Some gripes: tends to drift on concrete pavement. Engine is loud over 70 mph. I agree with a few reviewers, this car has a mind of its own. My cruise control will stop working randomly. The horn went off by itself … I had to pull the fuse! I bought an extended warranty which was a great investment … it covered the cost of replacing the entire AC system, alternator, radio/cassette, tie rod, and horn.

  • Good Little Car - 1999 Ford Escort

We bought this car with only 61K. It needed nothing from the dealer and currently needsnothing besides brakes. Its been a solid and reliable car. Acceleration is only adequate and it idles quite rough. The interior is comfortable although theres not a lot of room in back. Fuel economy is definitely a plus.

Good car for the price. Gets usually over 30 mpg if you drive right.

  • Trusty Escort - 1999 Ford Escort

I bought my Escort brand new and it has been an awesome basic car to have. It has only "dumped" me once, and it was my fault because I ignored the dying battery warning signs. I have the 5 spd and it never gets less than 34 MPG no matter what the conditions. It averages 36. Escorts will go forever with care, and I expect to see this one get 150,000 miles.
