Ford's entry-level car gets new colors, new interior fabrics and revised options. An AM/FM stereo with cassette is now standard on the Escort SE. An interior trunk release is now standard on all models. The sedans and wagon get all-door remote keyless entry added to their standard equipment lists. An integrated child seat is no longer available.

• Economical, loaded with features, and frugal at the gas pump. ZX2 coupe offers surprising performance.

• Sedan and wagon are not too pretty, ZX2 is downright funky.

  This has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. The mileage has always been great and I have not had any major repairs that werent covered by the warranty. Economical - Yes! Efficient - Yes! Would I buy it again? Yes!

  I bought my 1999 Escort with 90,000 miles on the odometer. I was looking for a late model car that would be easier on my wallet than the Pathfinder I had been driving. I average about 37-38 MPG on the highway, but have noticed a dramatic drop in city driving. The car has enough power to move it down the highway at speed, but acceleration, even with the 5 speed, is somewhat lacking. Road noise is minimal, and the sound system works exceptionally well, considering the rural environment I live in. My only complaint so far is a scrubbing/grinding noise when the brakes are spplied. I suspect either the rotors are warped or the brake pads are worn. Easy fix in either case.

  I loved this car. Bought it new and just after the warranty expired the air conditioner broke. Was about $300 to fix. One other thing went wrong about 6 months later that cost about the same. Other than that this is a great car. I swore I would never buy an Escort but this car was great. We totaled it last week when we hit a deer. Id buy another but they dont make them anymore.

  I had a 1992 Mustang 2.3l with duelspark... then a hyundai elantra 2.0 dohc... now this zx2. Wow... finally a manual again... fastest I have ever driven. Stereo is pretty good.

  Great vehicle - 1999 Ford Escort

  This was our 5th Escort, and like all of the others, it has been a great vehicle. Repairs have been minimal and more importantly very inexpensive. We consider these vehicles basic transportation, and they have delivered on their promise. The SE is much quieter than the other models and has been more comfortable to drive. The Escort has been available in the USA since 1981, but has a much longer history in europe (around 1960).

  This is my second escort and I love it. I bought it used with especially low miles, and I havent regretted it for a minute. Defiantly worth more then its priced at.

  ZX2 Hot - 1999 Ford Escort

  I use this car to commute to New York Metro area from Pa. I have put 90,000 miles on it in the 3 years I have owned it and the only thing that I have had to do on my ZX2 was change the oil and once the brakes. It has been a great car to own in terms of reliability and it is also a fun little car to drive. The Zx2 has a lot of pep and handles well on corners and in all weather conditions. I would recomend this model to anyone looking for a fast, fun, inexpensive form of transpertation.

  The car rides and handles like a much larger on the highway. Its no monster on take off but once on the road it has plenty of power.

  This is a second For Escort I have owned. I have never had any problems with this car. Change the oil, and it goes any distance.

  I went to Florida in March and got 40 MPG consistently on a two day trip. Cant get much better than that! I even get great mileage around my rural area, back and forth to stores, etc. Have not put any money into it, except a tie rod end, tires, and everyday maintenance. I love this car!!! Heats great, cools great, fun to drive!!
