This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's entry-level car gets new colors, new interior fabrics and revised options. An AM/FM stereo with cassette is now standard on the Escort SE. An interior trunk release is now standard on all models. The sedans and wagon get all-door remote keyless entry added to their standard equipment lists. An integrated child seat is no longer available.

Pros:
  • Economical, loaded with features, and frugal at the gas pump. ZX2 coupe offers surprising performance.
Cons:
  • Sedan and wagon are not too pretty, ZX2 is downright funky.

  • Worst Lemon Ever Owned! - 1999 Ford Escort

I purchased this wagon after reviewing other buyers comments 2 years ago. My inlaws also have 2 wagons and have had great success. At 56,000 miles one front wheel bearing and the clutch went. 3,000 miles later the clutch went again and it was discovered that the transmission was leaking fluid into the clutch so we replaced the transmission. Now at 61,000 the car is surging on the highway and I have a 5 hour trip planned for this weekend. The mechanic looked it over good and found a cracked fan belt, broken rear spring, look tie rod end and the surging.... well its definately the clutch.

My Escort has almost 180k on it now and has never let me down. Ever. She sees high rpms on a daily basis because of how fun this ride is! 5spd is definitely the way to go and the response is outstanding. I thought escorts were grandma cars until i noticed civics trying to keep up! The handling is so smooth that i sometimes forget that I am in an Escort. All my friends look to the ground with rising gas prices as I enjoy the day no matter what with my easily captured 35mpg. Fuel economy is simply amazing in this car! If you want an affordable car that just wont leave you in the dust or stranded, and out runs half the hybrids in the mpg test, i can confidently say "go with the Escort!"

I bought my car brand new, other than normal maintenence, Ive had no problems, never been stranded. Its getting older and the seats arent what they use to be, but old age will do that to you. Im wondering how many miles my Black Beauty will see.178,000 and counting.

  • Good Car for the Price - 1999 Ford Escort

It is a very simple car. It isnt powerful. It isnt very comfortable. I can feel almost every bump in the road. The A/C works like a dream on freeways but not very well at a stop. I put 58,000 miles on the car and have had to put it in the shop twice. In both instances, it was for a bad alternator. If everything I have said seems negative, keep in mind that this car ran me $11,000 out the door. For the money, this is the BEST car I have had. If your purpose for purchasing a car is a cheap, fairly dependable, vehicle that will get you where you need to go, then the Escort is it.

  • Sporty, economical & less than a Celica - 1999 Ford Escort
    By -

I purchased the car with 93,000 mi on it and paid $4,300 out the door with every option available (over half the price of the Celicas I was looking at). The car has an awesome stereo with premium sound. I drove it until 119,000. The only thing I had to replace was the thermostat. When I bought it, it did have a slight transmission leak that I always meant to have fixed. Instead I just put more fluid in every once in a while. When I sold the car, it did seem like it had the beginnings of real transmission trouble, but Im not positive. Trans problems are the one thing that can plague this vehicle. I cant ignore the fact, though, that my brother-in- law owned two with over 250,000 miles.

  • Good, reliable transportation - 1999 Ford Escort

Though somewhat vanilla, this car has been exceptionally reliable through the years. Good gas mileage and perfoms very well in all types of weather. Cabin fairly noisy on the highway

  • A good little car - 1999 Ford Escort
    By -

This was my first new car, and Ive had it for 9 years, now. I was a bit apprehensive when I bought it - an American car made in Mexico - but its been a champ. Ive only had 2 problems in that time: the alternator died after about 4 years, and the AC after about 8. Other than that, its been a great car. Good gas mileage, peppy acceleration, and fun to drive. Im officially an adult now, and buying a new car, so its time is up. Im really going to miss it, though. Ive had it so long its like an extension of myself, and its never let me down. I only hope my next car is as reliable and enjoyable. Farewell, old friend.

This has been a good little car. Ive had one problem(wheel bearing needed replacing). It has 93,000 miles on it and Knock wood no other problems. Now my wifes 2000 focus on the other hand has been pain with mutiple recalls. Overall Im satisfied with the 99 Escort.

I am a family man and pretty much like the car. Great value for the buck.

  • Good Commuter Car - 1999 Ford Escort
    By -

I bought the car with 30,000 miles on it and it runs very well. Does not leak anything and drivers very tight with ice cold AC that does not drain power from the engine. Pretty good passing power for a 4 cylinder with an automatic. Comfortable to drive and easy to get in and out of.
