This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's entry-level car gets new colors, new interior fabrics and revised options. An AM/FM stereo with cassette is now standard on the Escort SE. An interior trunk release is now standard on all models. The sedans and wagon get all-door remote keyless entry added to their standard equipment lists. An integrated child seat is no longer available.

Pros:
  • Economical, loaded with features, and frugal at the gas pump. ZX2 coupe offers surprising performance.
Cons:
  • Sedan and wagon are not too pretty, ZX2 is downright funky.

  • Great - 1999 Ford Escort

Drives and handles great. Looks great. Drove it to New Orleans and back last year with no problems at all. Didnt even have it checked out before I left, I have that much faith in it. Just routine maintenance, nothing more.

I own 4 Escorts,3 99s,1 98. My daily driver is a 2.0 SP 5 Sp sedan. This is the best car Ive ever owned. It had 32K miles when purchased and now has 132K. I have replaced 1 set of tires,1 tie rod end and the spark plugs. I drive the car extremely hard. The tach sees 5 grand every day. Fun to drive, handles like a dream and 32 MPG. None of my Escorts has ever left me or my wife stranded. If they still made them Id buy a new one. Great car.

I have put 194,000 miles on so far and have had no maintenance issues thus far. Change the oil every 3,500, thats it. Am still averaging 35.4 MPG. This has been a great can and expect to get 300,000 miles out of it easy.

I was looking for a commuter car, got that but also some extras. I found the ZX2 to have suprising power, sufficient comfort to take a 500 mile trip and to hold its own at freeway speeds, bonuses all. I am 64" and 225 lb and didnt expect to get away with buying so small a car. I have so much confidence in it that I bought new tires warranteed for 100,000 miles!

  • Great bang for your buck - 1999 Ford Escort

This car was purchased new and we now have 117k miles on it and have never done anything to it except the 100k mile tune up. It has been well worth the purchase price and if Ford still made them we would buy another one.

  • Great economy car - 1999 Ford Escort

Ive had this car for seven years and have only had to replace brakes and tires and a wiper blade now and then. Its a great car for girls because all of the fluid caps are have labels and the rear seats fold down so you can fit all of your shopping items in the car.

  • Nice first car - 1999 Ford Escort

I love this car. It is good and economical and very reliable when it is well taken care of. Good car for single people or students.

  • Ford Zx2 is a good practical car. - 1999 Ford Escort

If given the choice between this and a Focus or Honda again I would still choose the Zx2. The car is very fun to drive, work on, its very quick and outruns most cars on the road including some V8s yet still if babied I can get 37 miles the gallon and carry a lot of cargo. Its always been reliable and multi-functional. I went from an SUV to this and will never go back. Truly can not get a car this fast, this practical for this amount of money. Quite possibly one of Fords best cars. If this was in Europe or the UK the raving would never cease.

  • The Little Car that Could... - 1999 Ford Escort
    By -

I bought my Escort in a pinch. I had just bought my first house and very quickly realized the expenses of home ownership. I traded in my Ford Expedition and bought my Escort, cutting my car payment in half. Having owned SUVs for years and years, I wanted another "full cabin on frame" vehicle. Nothing car be more frustrating than trying to wedge a book shelf in the back of a sedan in the IKEA parking lot. I soon fell in love with the "little car that could". 4 years later and Im still attached to "Fred" as hes now known. I particularly enjoy the visibility while parallel parking and making fast lane changes during rush hour traffic. Hes been a darn good car to me.

  • Wicked Little Ride! - 1999 Ford Escort

Mine has 58,500 miles. Been hearing some squeaks. Strange vibration near the drivers side front when I turn the wheel all the way to the left. Transmission has a "hop" in it when starting from stand-still off the line. Had a 92 Escort LX and at 57K it did the same thing. MAINTAIN YOUR TRANSMISSION! Also, rotate tires & maintenance alignment regularly or it will PULL SHARP to one side because it is so light. Hydroplanes when wet out. Put weight in trunk to prevent this during winter. Engine run better on premium grade fuels. Fuel injectors cause drag if you use cheap fuel over time. Other than those typical high-mileage issues -- its fast, fuel-economical, and stylish.
