This Year's Model Updates:

The 2004 Ford Escape remains largely unchanged although the price has been lowered on the plush Limited model and certain appearance packages are now available on lower trim levels which, in effect, reduce the final price. Also, Chrome Yellow is no longer a color choice. To eliminate confusion, trim levels and option packages have been consolidated.

Pros:
  • Powerful V6, large cargo capacity, comfortable interior, carlike handling.
Cons:
  • Weak standard four-cylinder engine, bland interior design, small gas tank size limits range.

  • Blown engine - 2004 Ford Escape

My engine threw a rod at 34,311 miles and punched 2 holes in the block. Ford replaced it under warranty. If you buy a Ford make sure you are aware of their Road Side Assistance program and you also may want to get an extended warranty. They dont give you a replacement car or a rental without an extended warranty. I was without my vehicle for 2 weeks.

  • Excellent Compact SUV - 2004 Ford Escape

Have owned my AWD Escape XLT V6 for 15 trouble free months now and I continue to be impressed by the overall quality and versatility of this little SUV. Car-like ride, powerful engine, excellent handling and braking capability. I live on a small farm and occasionally have to drive it over some rough terrain. It is a tough little SUV, and Ford was smart enough to put all-terrain tires on the Escapes. This is a definite advantage over the Honda CR-V , Toyota RAV-4 and several other "pretenders." Would highly recommend the Escape to anyone.

I purchased my car less than 1 month ago. My Driver side door has already fallen off! The pins (bolts) are put in the hinge with the head facing down. Well That is a stupid error on Fords part for sure. However, the interior is roomy enought to feel like you are in a larger SUV as compared to the RAV and the Honda. It has a powerful enough engine. And the stereo system is not bad for being a stock feature. Customer Service has so far taken care of the problem and even gave me a free rent car (if they didnt I would be more than angry)

I bought a red XLT in June of 2001, and I loved it so much, that I traded it in for a new 2004 black Limited with the black leather interior and moonroof. I only wish I could have purchased the heated seats, maybe next time!

  • Comfortable and peppy - 2004 Ford Escape

This is very car-like small truck. It could have included some small conveniences such as: compass, trip computer, overhead console,12V outlet in the rear. I would recommend getting the lumbar support as the driver seat will do a number on your back on long trips.

The pick-up is great in a go situation- It handles great, is perfect for my type of job--I’m in it 5 days a week, in and out-stop and go-I practically live in my Escape 45 hrs a week.

This is my first SUV vehicle and I have always had sports cars but this vehicle has been a great addition to my household. It is quick, handles well, is easy to drive and is extremely comfortable. I can fit an amazing amount of stuff and am glad I did not buy a larger SUV. I absolutely love it!

The gas mileage is not as good as advertised. I get about 15mpg. But this thing looks sharp and drives nicely.

  • Fun and sporty - 2004 Ford Escape

I had been driving an Expedition for 6 years..and previously a Tahoe...went to the escape for fuel economy purposes...had some reservations because of the room i was giving up to drive this car...but in the end...all the other features..and the fact that i save on gas...outweighed the size... Lots of fun to drive, great in the snow, and handles terrific in bad weather...passed a Liberty Jeep on the way home from upstate ny and it was in a ditch..mine stayed on the road..with very slippery conditions....very reliable.
