This Year's Model Updates:

A redesigned face gives this Ford more character, but the new taillight treatment is almost identical to the Contour's sibling, the Mercury Mystique. New alloy wheels and a slightly more commodious rear seat debut. Midyear changes included a model consolidation, the addition of depowered airbags, as well as improved handling and new wheels for the SVT.

Pros:
  • Energetic performance in the spirit of more expensive German sedans.
Cons:

  • Lots of zip too many recalls - 1998 Ford Contour

Contour Sport with 2.5liter, 175 hp is a poor mans sports car. Lots of zip when getting on the freeway. Gets up to 80 mph before you know it. Hey, Ford!!! Whats with all the recalls????? I lost count at 12, and for really stupid stuff. Air conditioner accumulator rusted through at 45,000 and cost me plenty to cold air flowing again. Wifes car. Its getting traded in later this week for a new Jeep Wrangler.

  • I can drive for miles and miles...... - 1998 Ford Contour

I have a 65,000 square mile sales territory in the southwest and have had excellent service from this vehicle. It has no rattles or squeaks. It has never let me down, I change the oil every 3- 4,000 miles and it does not burn any oil. The timing belt ( give me a steel chain please) was replaced at 90,000 miles. The spark plugs have never been replaced. I have been looking for a replacement vehicle but am very reluctant to give up this reliable workhorse.

  • Not bad! - 1998 Ford Contour

Going to the dealership I had the thought of buying an import. This car has been a dream. The performance and value is A+++. The only problem Ive had is the sunroof getting stuck open, but the warranty covered it.

I have owned this car for a since Feb. 2002, and its been reliable and fun to drive. This contour has the 2.5 V6, which is a fast, high-performance engine. Handles well, brakes great and most of all, it passes cars on the freeway with ease.

As the owner of two Contours, I can say that they are great cars, which went out of production too soon. My GL and SE are loads of fun, but require you to be patient with their shortcomings. Get the V-6 and a stick, or if you like it a bit firmer, an SVT is the best. Check out Contour.org for more info on this great car!

  • My Car - 1998 Ford Contour

I recently purchased a 98 contour with 80,000 miles. It was running great until recently when it just randomly shut off when I was driving, when I went to restart it the check engine light turned on in stead. The result was I needed to put a new engine in it. Besides that I have had only one other complaint about the car, the cup holders. they are completely useless, everything just falls out of them.

  • Good experiences - 1998 Ford Contour

I bought my -98 SE 6 months ago, and I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I have well liked its adequate performance delivered by the 170hp V6 Duratec. I also like its handling, which is more precise than that of an average car. The suspension might at times feel hard but not excessively so. The trunk is roomy so skiing trips for 2-3 are no problem. The traction control proved to be moneys worth on one of these trips too. - T
