Overview & Reviews
A redesigned face gives this Ford more character, but the new taillight treatment is almost identical to the Contour's sibling, the Mercury Mystique. New alloy wheels and a slightly more commodious rear seat debut. Midyear changes included a model consolidation, the addition of depowered airbags, as well as improved handling and new wheels for the SVT.
- Energetic performance in the spirit of more expensive German sedans.

Blast to drive - 1998 Ford Contour
By continuity - May 9 - 2:00 amIve owned this car since it was about 15k miles old. Beautiful, no problems that couldnt be fixed under warranty. Dont bother with the automatic... why bother handicapping such a wonderful machine that deserves the 5 speed?

good car - 1998 Ford Contour
By Double0man - April 12 - 2:00 amI have owned this car since buying it new. No problems except the stupid engine light comes on, but thats a known bug. Just buy the cupholder option from ford to make the cupholders useful (~$15)

Great Car - 1998 Ford Contour
By Christina75 - February 18 - 2:00 amThis car is great! It drives smooth, but the size of the car could use a V6 instead of a 4 for power. This car is very roomy compaired to the Toyota Carola I test drove. I like the shoulder belt in the middle great safety for my children. All in all, The exterior, interior and safety features was a big plus. It did have two recalls on it that no one had ever fixed: heater blower resistor and connector, and the front spring shield.

Vroom vroom Candie the Contour - 1998 Ford Contour
By Pixie tha Racer - January 3 - 2:00 amI love my Candie the Contour. I bought her in Nov. with 69k mi. and have had many problems since. Within our first week together, she needed a new serp belt, new spark plugs,a new air filter, a coolant flush, and a new glove box. During the second week, she stalled like crazy and eventually wouldnt start cause she needed a new fuel line. Not to mention the humming sound when I turn the wheel to the right, or the big huge CLUNK! When I take a sharp turn. And after all this work, shes been mine for two wonderful months now and STILL the freekin coolant light and the check engine lights come on ALL THE TIME! AHHH!

This was a great car! - 1998 Ford Contour
By yeah-yeah - December 28 - 2:00 amWe bought this Contour (V6, AT, A/C, PW, PD, CC, AM/FM/CD, Alloy 15" Wheels, Keyless Remote & Anti0-Theft Immobilizer) to be our everyday driver. It turned out to be a great car, with a few problems. Before the 3yr / 36,000 mile warranty expired, we bought a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty for $1200. Good thing, too, because at 40,000 miles the transmission suddenly started "slam-shifting" and had to be replaced to the tune of $3,500 at the dealer. The extended warranty covered 90% of that, so it easily paid for itself. At around 85,000 miles the Check Engine Light started coming on -- all it needed was new spark plugs to pass its CA smog check (with flying colors).

a love-hate relationship - 1998 Ford Contour
By ContourMan - September 20 - 2:00 amI have a 98 SE with the 2.5L six and the sport package. I love driving the car because of its steering response and handling, and Im pretty satisfied with its power (everyone wants a faster 0-60 time, right?). Despite all of this, I cant forget that the tranny burned up at 30k miles. It didnt help matters that the dealers service department misdiagnosed the problem as something else the first time I took it to them. I like my Contour, but Im not sure Ill ever buy another Ford.

Fun to drive - 1998 Ford Contour
By robh - July 9 - 2:00 amFun to drive ... 170hp and great handling. This car does not have a very snappy engine but when in the power band it pulls well. It also loves to be thrown into the corners. (had to replace a wheel bearing once). The exhaust is still original and I just replaced rear rotors and pads after 55 000 miles. The front disks still look Ok. Things I had problems with: Paint on hood crazing (dealer would not fix) wheel bearing (my fault) recalls air flow sensor a/c expansion valve
