Overview & Reviews
A redesigned face gives this Ford more character, but the new taillight treatment is almost identical to the Contour's sibling, the Mercury Mystique. New alloy wheels and a slightly more commodious rear seat debut. Midyear changes included a model consolidation, the addition of depowered airbags, as well as improved handling and new wheels for the SVT.
- Energetic performance in the spirit of more expensive German sedans.

lots of repairs - 1998 Ford Contour
By jbird1979 - August 28 - 2:00 amWhen I first purchased this car, I should have know things wouldnt go well based on the number of recalls! The fuel filler neck, blower swith, airbag sensors, and transmission gear indicator were all in need of repair. Too bad everything else wasnt covered by recalls or technical service bulletins. Ive had to replace the AC system, cooling fan (twice), thermostat, belt tensioner, and much more. At least its paid for...

Nothing but trouble - 1998 Ford Contour
By jelly - June 24 - 2:00 amHad the car for two years and have had nothing but problems. Average money put into the car in two years : 3000 $. new transmission, tires, engine, battery, and O2 sensors that were suposed to fix the check engine light but its still on from 6 months ago. Runs badly in the winter, barely starts. Cant wait to sell it. Oh and to make a copy of your key will set you back about 150 dollars!

Regrettful - 1998 Ford Contour
By sucker - August 11 - 2:00 amIve had this car for a couple years and have had nothing but problems. Now the Check Engine light stays on, despite a few dealerships checking it inside and out. It occasionally smells like gas, dies from time to time, and feels like its jumping when you are stopped. The worst part about all these problems is that nobody can find anything wrong! They tell me there is nothing to fix!

Biggest piece of crap I ever owned - 1998 Ford Contour
By Dani J - April 22 - 2:00 amIn 1 year I had to replace the onboard computer, replace the timing belt (miantenance), rebuild the transmission, and have had to replace the rotors 3 times. They cant fix a short it the electrical system. It has lost almost all of its value, which has left me upside down in my loan.

Good car but too many minor troubles... - 1998 Ford Contour
By cqbiho - November 10 - 2:00 amI think this car is nice to drive. Good handling, acceleration and even abraking system. However, the reliability of this car is far from perfect. Normally, cars from Ford is in the same situation.

Contour (Recallour) - 1998 Ford Contour
By zx2 - October 31 - 2:00 amOur contour is a gl v6 sport. This car is the king of recalls and is very unreliable. Check engine light is always comming on. Transmission shifts to abruptly. Sunroof most of the time does not work. Ride is to harsh and too much engine noise. Engine is always making growling sounds especially at low speeds. Duratech does not feel as powerful as its 170 hp rating. Paint scratches easily, flimsy car. Drinks alot of gas. Really glad they dont make this troublesome model anymore, think early 80s american car. If yours runs good you probably have a 4 cylinder or hardly drive.

Nickel and Dime - 1998 Ford Contour
By Disssatisfied - March 3 - 6:55 pmI had bought my 1998 Contour SE in August of 2001 with 31000 miles and currently has 40000 miles. In six months Ive had to replace the fuel sensor and PCV valve, Catalytic converter, Alternator, (totalling ~$550)and about another $200+ counting other mechanics fees for just identifing other problems. In addition, I was not notified by Ford about recalls on my car. These repairs should not occur at this mileage and why am I left in the dark about recalls? I am very unimpressed by Ford.
