Make Overview:

One of America's most storied automotive brands, Dodge has been around since the early days of the auto industry. In the past couple of decades, it has revitalized itself to be a producer of aggressively styled and performance-oriented vehicles.

Two brothers, Horace and John Dodge, began the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle company in 1914, after having worked as manufacturers of bicycles and automotive parts. Their first vehicle was a touring car that proved a fast favorite with car buyers; it was soon joined by a roadster and a four-door sedan. By 1917, the company's model line had grown to include trucks. Dodge cars and trucks were used as staff vehicles and ambulances in World War I.

Dodge was briefly owned by a banking firm and subsequently sold by its new owner to the Chrysler Corporation in 1928. From there, the brand slowly evolved into the division responsible for trucks and performance-oriented cars. Post WWII, Dodge introduced vehicles like the military-inspired Power Wagon truck, Hemi-powered Coronet and the Royal Lancer; in addition, the manufacturer began offering dealer-installed air-conditioning.

Vehicles like the Dodge Dart and the Coronet kept the manufacturer in American driveways throughout the 1960s. That decade also saw the launch of one of Dodge's most iconic vehicles, the Charger. Dodge's muscle car was based on the Coronet platform, and featured a fastback roof line, hidden headlamps and a full-width taillamp panel. Best of all, the Charger could pack one heck of a wallop under the hood. A 318-cubic-inch V8 was standard, but buyers seeking maximum brawn could upgrade to a 426-cubic-inch, 425-hp Hemi V8. The company also introduced a Mustang-fighting pony car, called the Challenger, in 1970.

As with other American auto manufacturers, Dodge's fortunes started to slip in the '70s due to changing tastes and increased competition. The company was saved from extinction in the early '80s thanks to government loans and the sales success of its Omni and Aries economy cars (the former an attempted copy of the VW Rabbit). But 1984 was when Dodge made its mark in the history books with the introduction of the wildly popular Caravan. Ideal for families and able to seat up to seven, the space-efficient Caravan started a whole new vehicle segment -- the minivan.

The early '90s saw the company wow the public with the V10-powered Viper roadster and an all-new Ram pickup that set a new standard for big-rig-like styling. A few years later, Dodge came to be part of DaimlerChrysler, a result of the merger of the German company Daimler (owner of Mercedes-Benz) and Chrysler.

The merger never really worked, however, and Daimler sold Chrysler and Dodge to a private equity firm in 2007. Soon after, America's economy slid into recession. Due to poor sales and debt, Chrysler had to declare bankruptcy. The federal government intervened and eventually Dodge came under control of Fiat, a European automaker known for its small cars, an area where Dodge's entries had been roundly criticized for mediocre build quality and unrefined performance.

More recent years have seen Dodge concentrate on the more practical vehicles in its lineup, making notable improvements to the performance and overall quality of its midsize Avenger sedan and Journey SUV entries. Dodge also spun off its truck line, making it a separate Ram brand. But make no mistake; Dodge is still considered Chrysler's performance division thanks to cars like the Challenger and Charger. Time will tell how successful Dodge's latest makeover is.

  • Years have passed - 1998 Dodge Neon

I have driven this car for 5 years and it has been wonderful. It performs better than cars costing twice as much. The only minor complaints are: head gasket went out (replaced by dealer) and that it is a bit buzzy on high speed interstate driving. Otherwise, I would recommend this car to anyone!

I am a commute to college and work, so I rely heavily on dependable transportation. I love having the power of a V6 along with outstanding fuel economy. The cars rides smoothly and comfortably. My only gripe are the brakes. Ive had to turn down the rotors at 25,000 miles and later replace the front brake pads and rotors at 40,000 miles. I also think the front springs may be on their way out at 48,000 miles. Other than that, I change the oil every 4000 miles and the car runs great.

  • What A Joke - 1997 Dodge Neon

This is truly a piece of junk. These cars come staight from the factory with a warped head. Which i believe is like most owners of this car "warped heads". If you dont get the head shaved on theses cars you will have the same problem over again. And then they will start to burn oil and you are spending more money then for gas it seems! I have never had to do so much work to keep it going. I will never own another and will tell my friends the same.

  • Im buying another one! - 1998 Dodge Intrepid
    By -

Had to buy a used car with high mileage because it was all I could afford. It had 70,000 on it and 2 years later I have 130,000 on it. I put a set of tires on it at Wal-Mart (could not afford another set of Good year Eagles because they dont wear very well). At 100,000 I took it to the dealer and had them change the spark plugs like the manual recommends. All other routine maintenance was done by me, oil and air filters, PCV and brakes etc. NO major repairs needed! The 200 hp motor has plenty of power and gets 30 mpg when cruising at 70! Trading it on a 2001 next week.

I bought a 96 dakota ext. cab and it has done wonders. i can alway rely on it to get me to my destination. It has 117,000 miles and is still running strong. When others fail, this one comes out on top.

  • Pretty good car for the buck! - 2000 Dodge Stratus
    By -

Ive had my Stratus for a year now and I have gotten fairly good service from it during this time. I bought it with 12,000 miles and now have 45,000 on it. Only a few minor problems with it which the dealership took car of after a few visits.

We traded a 2002 model with a 3.3 in it.Used ES model came to dealer with 10,000 km on it Old guy owned it, to big for him to park. He had put a gold warranty plan on it. Even paid all oil changes. I really like the power and good in ice and slush with ice radials. Have just had very miner problems, all fixed on warranty.Dont use it enough, should sell it, but like to drive it. Only has 60,000 kms. on it(37,000)miles. I suppose Ill have nothing but trouble now that I brag about it.

  • dodge fan scarred for life - 1999 Dodge Neon
    By -

this was the first new car i bought. I have taken awesome care and have always been an avid dodge fan. this car has been a bad joke. it had major electrical problems at one month, a new stereo at two months, a blown headgasket, two major oil leaks one at 38000 just after warrenty and dodge told me" its too bad, those cars all have oil leaks" they wouldnt help at all. the repair of the leaks cost me about 2000.00 total. now it hasa transmission leak, the trunk will no longer open from the inside and the rear doors will no longer unlock with the power locks. What a dissapointment.
