Model Overview:

The Dodge Magnum welcomed us to the American station wagon, Version 2.0. Most of us are familiar with the first version, the one that populated American roadways in the 1950s, '60s and '70s before being displaced by minivans and SUVs. Station wagon 2.0 was supposed to be a rebirth of sorts. The Dodge Magnum was intended to prove that the wagon could be cool again.

In terms of style, power and utility, there was nothing else quite like the Magnum. It attracted plenty of well-deserved attention because of its styling. Its long, low stance and flat tail end called to mind those wagons of decades past, but a rising beltline, tapering roof line, short overhangs, trucklike grille and prominent wheels gave it a contemporary and sporty appearance.

Sadly, Wagon Version 2.0 lived a short life. Apparently Dodge couldn't shake the Country Squire memories of Version 1.0, because it pulled the plug on the Magnum following 2008 due to slow sales. The Magnum still makes for an intriguing used car, though, particularly in V8-powered guise.

Most Recent Dodge Magnum

The Dodge Magnum was sold from 2005-'08. When last sighted at Dodge dealerships, the Magnum was available in four trim levels -- SE, SXT, R/T and SRT8 -- which provided increasing levels of standard equipment and performance features. For power, the Magnum SE was equipped with a 200-horsepower V6. It provided adequate acceleration at best. Most will prefer either the 250-hp V6 in the SXT or the R/T's 340-hp V8. The SRT8 had an even larger V8 good for 425 hp. An automatic transmission was standard with all four engines.

Most Magnums were rear-wheel drive, but Dodge offered all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions of the SXT and RT. Because of their added traction capabilities, these AWD wagons could serve well as an SUV alternative for consumers living in poor-weather climates. No Magnum was really meant for towing, however.

In reviews of the Dodge Magnum, our editors praised the vehicle's roomy and comfortable interior, useful cargo area and inspiring performance. Though their fuel economy is naturally on the low side, the V8-equipped models are well suited for both long-distance cruising and stoplight encounters. The Magnum SRT8, for instance, can clear the quarter-mile mark in fewer than 14 seconds. Handling capabilities are also surprisingly composed on the higher level trims.

When the Magnum debuted for the 2005 model year, the RWD SXT model had a four-speed automatic transmission, but it was upgraded to a five-speed unit later in 2006 (AWD SXTs always had a five-speed). The optional R/T Performance Group model that arrived for 2007 added 10 horses, and an inside-out update for 2008 included higher-quality cabin materials and a more upscale appearance.

  • Looking Good - 2007 Dodge Magnum

I own a 1969 Superbee, 1971 Cuda, & a 1981 Corvette and I have as much fun and more comfort in the Magnum as I do in all of the other cars I own. If you are looking for a car, I would highly recommend the Magnum. Dodge has discontinued this car which I think is very foolish.

A very comfortable ride. The car has much more get up and go than expected. It also attracts a lot of interest and attention. This vehicle is smaller than any Ive owned in many years, but it doesnt handle as such. It handles very much like a larger luxury vehicle. There is lots of foot room for rear seat passengers, which is another great feature. All in all, I would highly recommend this vehicle.

  • Dodge Magnum- Top notch quality and fun - 2005 Dodge Magnum

In 50 years of driving, Ive owned a lot of new cars from all price ranges. This Dodge Magnum exhibits the best overall quality of any vehicle, foreign or domestic, that I have ever purchased. It combines great looks, great performance, and solid quality. I waited for GM to come out with something like this vehicle and they never even came close, so my next new car in a few years will likely be another Dodge Magnum, probably the SRT. With the Magnum, American made cars are again fun to drive.

THIS CAR IS THE BEST AUTO I HAVE EVER DRIVEN. A VERY SMOOTH RIDE, EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, AND VERY RELIABLE.

I traded my 05 Bonneville for the 05 Magnum SXT RWD 3.5L. I am 19 and this is the perfect car- its definitely a sporty college kid car, and I got mine with under 20k miles for under $10k. What a steal! Gas mileage is not bad. I get 21mpg driving around town but I do a lot of interstate driving and i maintain 25-27mpg. Not better than my Bonneville no, but it certainly gets just as good gas mileage as any other car on the road today. I only wish I had a Magnum R/T. I want the dual chrome exhaust with the Hemi!

  • Worth the note - 2005 Dodge Magnum

PURE JOY, GOBS OF POWER, ROOM FOR WIFE AND KIDS, GETS PLENTY OF LOOKS, GETTING 27 MPG ON STRICT HIGHWAY, LOVE THE FACT THAT IT IS DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING ELSE ON THE ROAD, THE HEMI IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO ON THIS VEHICLE. ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE MONTHLY NOTE!

  • Possibly my all-time favorite vehicle!!! - 2005 Dodge Magnum

Dont be fooled by the "station wagon" description assigned to this beautiful, terrific machine (although we appreciate it, because it no doubt helped with our insurance rates)! The Hemi engine is awesome, and isnt the gas-guzzler you might think. Over the years, weve owned Corvettes and Cadillac Allantes - our Hemi-powered RT gets as good or better gas mileage than they did. We read a review recently that trashed the cruise control system in the RT (mainly its location) which totally amazes me because its location on the steering column is one of the most accessible/handy Ive ever used, and its very easy to manipulate. Go with the RT - I promise you wont be disappointed!

  • dodge does it right!! - 2005 Dodge Magnum

this car rocks!!!!! the hemi is a sweet addition to a cool looking car. i opted for the v-6 for fear of my right foot!! the 6 is a capable motor, it moves fairly well and with the stability control turned off and with a little water under the tires they can be turned!!the ride is smooth, and you don`t get the feeling of being in a land yacht.

  • Car to heavy for smaller 190 hp engine - 2005 Dodge Magnum

Love the car, love the design but the 190hp 2.7 6cyl does not have enought power for this vehicle.
