This Year's Model Updates:

Dodge's brute of a midsize 'ute receives numerous improvements for 2001. An electronic transfer case for its four-wheel drive system is now standard on 4WD models. A new instrument panel, center console with cupholders, interior trim and upgraded stereo has been added, and a tilt steering column is now standard on all Durangos. The 5.2-liter V8 engine is dropped, leaving the more efficient 4.7-liter V8 as standard equipment in both 4x2 and 4x4 Durangos. A variable-delay intermittent rear wiper is offered, and auto-dimming, heated outside power mirrors can be had on in SLT trim. A new appearance option group for the SLT includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, along with special body side moldings, running boards and lower panels. New 15-inch Sparkle Silver aluminum wheels are standard across the Durango lineup.

Pros:
  • Aggressive styling, large interior, powerful engine lineup.
Cons:
  • Poor gas mileage, stiff ride, lousy crash test scores.

This is a real SUV, not a "High Wagon" or "car based" unibody pretender. It has a real metal truck frame, a 5.9 Liter 360 cubic inch V8 not a 4.x or 3.x Liter. (Those CIDs belong in V6s for you youngsters that dont know any better.) The Durango rides smoothly, but lets you know if you hit a bump. It sucks down the gas like its goin out of style. A perfect American SUV to drive out in CA or NY just to tick off the tree huggers. The Infinity sound system needed no aftermarket upgrades, and the fit and finish of the vehicle (built in NJ) was comprable to the imports.

Excellent choice for a mid-size SUV. 3 Sets of seats extremely beneficial especially the fact that both sets of rear seats lay down flat when the space is needed and the seats are not. 4.7 litre V8 is extemely potent. I tow a 19 boat and it does a great job. I own the 2 WD version (I live in the south no need for the added weight, suspension, etc.) so the ride is really plush for an SUV. Additionally, I get over 20 MPG on the highway. 3rd SUV Ive owned in 8 years (2 Jeeps and now the Durango) and it was one of my favorites. If youre considering it, Id highly recommend it.

I bought a 01 Durango R/T with the 5.9 and about 44k mi. A few days after I got it. Over drive Components destroyed the tranny. The dealership replaced the Tranny and I havent had any trouble since. There are a few little noises inside the dash that are a bit annoying. But the comfort and perfomance of this R/T largly out-weigh the small problems.

Our 2001 Durango was a Demo and had 6K on it when we purchased it. We have put over 65K on it and it is still running strong. No problems at all! Just wanted all you die-hards to know what you have to look forward to!!

I bought this SUV knowing that the MPG where going to be low but its an SUV. I really like how it drives and if you want to take it off road you can. The R/T model is a big plus big engine/more power.

Bought my Rango used in 2003 with 71k miles on it. Had its nicks and dents, but engine and transmission still functioned like new. Looked forward to buying it since about July of 2002 and dont regret a thing. Truck has been nothing but good to me. Only problem was the rear speed sensor going at 76k but I knew what the problem was and diagnosed it myself with no problems. $35 dollar part, spent about an hour replacing it. Absolutely love the truck, forget the Exploder (yes I meant what I typed) and the Tahoe, get yourself a Durango

This is my second Durango. After leasing a 98 Durango, I was so impressed, when it was time to give it back in 01 I instead sold it to my best friend and nieghbor and bought a new one. Neither my freind or I have had a single issue and are continually impressed with the performance and build quality to this day. Both Durangos are 5.9 SLT Plus.

  • Still Favorite - 2001 Dodge Durango

Have owned 4WD trucks and SUVs since 1956 and this is my favorite stock one. The 2003 (last) New England Winter didnt slow it down, neither did my two-way trip across the US on I-90 in January. Its tough enough to handle medium intensity offroading, unaided. And it handles remarkably well on the highway, stable even at extreme speeds. Its a good ride.

  • Best Vehicle I Ever Owned - 2001 Dodge Durango

With 36,000 miles now, I have never been stranded, its never stalled and it gets 17 mpg. Easy to drive, great visibility and very, very safe. More affordable than Chevy and Ford and does all they do, and more, with the fold down 3rd seat. Cold front and back A/C, decent CD system and nice ergonomics inside. I would buy another one if the price was right.
