Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.
As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.
Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.
Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.
Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.
In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

Ask the man who owns one - 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Thos. Zachary - April 28 - 6:53 amThe car starts well runs well accelerates well. Short wheel base makes the ride on poorly maintained roads is somewhat rigid. Winter driving is good. Trips to northern Michigan are pleasurful,gas mileage 28 to 30. City short drives with air on in is as low as 17mpg. Only poor features , Horn that belongs on a childs peddle car and recessed speedometer shadows does not make reading easy. Would Irecommend the car to others? Yes .

I love this car!!! - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

At first I wasnt sure of this car the look anyway, and then I drove the 2006 PT Cruiser, and fell in love with it. I have to keep going into the garage to look at it, the interior is so cool. I love the look, and it drives so smooth. You have to go and test drive this car. Im a single mom and have a 1 yr old we are so happy, we found the perfect car for us!! Thank you Chrysler for building this vehicle.

Just passed 3K miles. - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Bukyman.com - April 21 - 11:43 pmThis vehicle started the retro-craze. It is beautifully ugly! I have enjoyed every second in this still head-turning panel van. Chevy has tried to copy it recently and Ford knows better. I picked the cheapest on the lot because I needed a low cost commuter. Air is my only option, but the Cruiser comes with tilt wheel, power windows, power locks, and a stock stereo and speakers that rival my old 91 Dodge Shadow ES Turbo that I equipped with an aftermarket Sony Explode sound system. The bass on the stock 6 speaker system is incredible! The base 2.4 L 4 cylinder is more than enough to power this vehicle. By 4 cylinder standards it is fairly large and would take most 6 cylinders. I love mine!

Great Small Wagon - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Larry E Nave - April 18 - 3:23 pmI just purchased my PT Cruiser, I traded in a 2003 Durango for it. I liked my Durango, but wanted something easier on gas. The Cruiser fits the bill, fun to drive, for a 4 cyclinder it has great get up an go. My Son has a 2004 Touring and my nephew justed traded his 2002 for a new Touring also, they love them. I have always be a Chrysler person, have had Dodge, Plymouth and Chryslers.

Love my PT - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Scalhoun - April 11 - 12:40 pmMy PT has been a great car. No mechanical problems at all. My only suggestion would be to make the headrest more comfortable. It tilts forward or isnt the right height for my height. Its to tall. This makes me lean forward the whole time Im driving. Its the only complaint I have about this vehicle at all.

Lotta car, little price - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By bestpilot - April 11 - 9:56 amThree years and no problems. My gas mileage is better than EPA rating and Im a lead foot; I get 22 city, 29 Hwy with automatic. Quality is on par with Accord or Camry (Ive owned Hondas and Toyotas) and the car cost me ten grand less, about 15K new. The mini-limo back seat gets rave reviews from family and friends; we always use this car for road trips. I would buy again without hesitation.

When I shopped for a car, I had no intention to purchase a PT Cruiser. I am extremely glad I checked it out.

By Zhen - April 10 - 2:00 amWow! 180hp with 210lb torque! This is such a hot car. I have had this car for less then 2 days and already have had 10 people tell me how much they love the styling. I have the Electric Blue with Dark interior. It is so hot! This car isnt the GT, but it has so much power. I wish the tires where higher performance with better grip because I have smoked the tires four times from start to 40 and once while going 20 and hitting the gas.

By Funfuncar - March 31 - 10:00 amI love this car! Its fast, fun, and comfortable. Plus, its really practical for hauling stuff (thats the story I told my wife, and Im sticking to it). Almost no turbo lag (pulls hard from about 2000 rpm), nice handling with a little body lean in curves, but its a tall vehicle, so I expected that. I also drove the Limited turbo, but liked the seats in the GT much better. Ive had lots of compliments on how nice and how comfortable the interior is. If this car is as reliable as PTs seem to be, it will be my favorite car ever.
