Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Very cool cruiser to drive and own! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

We are the PROUD owners of an inferno red PT cruiser GT turbo convertible! There is lots of leg room, my husband & I can sit in the back comfortably. There isnt anything I havent been able to fit into the car yet for storage. The turbo model has awesome pick-up! We live in the midwest, & will have to wait & see how it handles in the snow, the traction control is great so far in the rain. This is a very fun car to drive, & its very functional too. Havent paid much attention to the gas mileage, guess its about average with other cars weve had. The heated front seats will be very "cool" when winter arrives! Weve had the car just over 6months, & it still looks & feels brand new!

I bought my Electric Blue Cruiser Convertible in May and after 5 months am still having the love afair. It handles and rides smoothly. The suspension gives a ride comparable to most big cars I have driven. The attention to detail and especially the top of the line convertible top make it a real pleaser. I still turn heads when I pull into a parking lot.

  • I love this Car!!! - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have only had my P.T. turbo Cruiser convertible for a month and just love driving it, its not a light car but built heavy and strong and tight. This car is great on corners and has an excellent pick up when you give it a little extra gas. the top is easy to put up and down the boot is a little cumbersome til you get used to putting it on correctly. It has been fabulous on gas, and Im getting more mileage to the gallon then it represents on the stats. The trunk is not large but the back seats go down and there is an opening from the trunk into the back seat for larger items. This is the most fun Ive had in years. Dolores

  • FINE WITHOUT TURBO - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Weve had our LTD for almost 4 months, 2270 mi, and do not regret taking a pass on the GT model. The LTD rides a little nicer than the GT, and I have no problem getting up to 80mph on the Tollway when its my turn to drive for our 4 person call pool. No rattles or problems so far. MPG is lower than I expected, hovering around 20mpg. Acceleration is no problem in town, and its just a matter of kicking it in if you have to have a surge of power. Passengers rave about the comfort, and ease of access. Cargo space is great. The LTD is a great value. Save purchase costs and the costs of premium fuel and lower gas milage by taking a pass on the GT.

  • PT call home - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Just absolutely love this vehicle. I traded in a Lincoln Mark VIII for it (which I also loved) and thought I might find the PT too confining- not at all so. About the only improvement I would make is slightly larger front seats (the bottom- and Im only 510, 180lbs)that are more adjustable. Thats it! You do also have to be aware of the low ground clearance of the front end. It goes great in snow, can carry almost anything and I like it more each day.

  • More fun than expected, so-so on gas - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Rented a PT Cruiser for a week long trip through the Florida Keys. It was MUCH more "fun" than I would have expected - Im 63 and the driving position was more comfortable than most vehicles. The Touring Turbo has pretty good pick-up and handling was really good for such a tall vehicle. VERY impressed with the fit and finish.

What a great fun car to own and drive. You can easily find one barely used. Chances are previous owners have babied their car and it is in great condition. With thier low intrests rates...can you afford not to own one?

Only one small problem with car. Gas cap didnt seal on 3rd year safety inspection. Car rides well..the standard shift is fun, especially in the mountains. I am glad I didnt by the automatic. Seats are firm and the car is very responsive.
