Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • One Solid PT - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

My Cruiser has been excellent. The car handles well, hugs the curves, and has a solid feel with nothing cheap or tinny about it. Its an excellent value for an economy car. The interior has a quality look and feel. The exterior has the most beautiful paint job ("inferno red"). The cars finish looks almost liquid. This is one of the best value cars for the money. Its been a pleasure to drive.

We are a 2 PT family! Love the styling and the turbo makes all the difference in the world in performance. Its fun and practical for a convertible. We love our 2003 sedan and the 2005 convertible with the turbo is a great addition to the rolling stock.

This is our second PT. My wife loves hers so much that I thought Id try one, too. Formerly a Jeep Wrangler driver. Love the convertible aspect of the Wrangler, but it took 15-20 minutes to convert it. With the PT, its one touch of a button and 10 seconds. Love it, love it, love it!

  • Wicked Fun - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The most fun I have inside a car while fully dressed. Its just great to drive, and extremely comfortable. I had driven a PT about a year ago, and was underwhelmed. The GT PT is another vehicle entirely. If you have driven a PT cruiser in the past, but you were turned off because you thought it was underpowered, try the GT Turbo.

  • Luv My PT Cruiser - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Ive been exited about my PT Cruiser before I even purchased. After purchasing I have experienced nothing more but pure enjoyment with comfort, ride and dependability. I cannot stop loving the Classic look of the PT Cruiser and I still enjoy the looks I get from other people while sporting my car. I purchased the top of the line the PT Cruiser Limited Edition in Cranbury, with top of line "wheels" as well, and I have received many, many compliments about what a "nice" car it is!! Im very happy although I must say.... I enjoy putting the kids in the back seat with the tinted windows and no one can see in. I enjoy people asking me about my PT Cruiser. My mother loves my PT Cruiser!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Classy Silver Convertible with verve - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Driving this convertible for 3 weeks now. Took 1,000 mile trip second week. MPG fluctuates a lot, but looks like will be close to 22 city/29 hwy. Ive seen 21 low and 40(!)high so far. Top is almost always down and a/c off. Only hiccup was fuel gauge dropped to dead empty for about 15 minutes, but no problems since. Trunk setup is surprisingly roomy and stooping is not as bad as I expected. My girls act like the back seat is in a roller coaster-fun. Turning circle a bit wide. Haggled dealer into AM/FM/CD/MP3 player to replace AM/FM/Cassette due to some bait and switch resentment. Glad I did. Base audio sounds rather muddy, though. 70 mph with top down and windows up is fine on freeway.

I have had my PT Cruiser for about 8 months and lots of places that i go I get complimented on my car. I enjoy the look and style of the PT as it is unique. I have driven several hours at a time and find the drive to be comfortable and relaxing, even though traffic usually isnt. I have only positive things about my PT Cruiser to tell anyone.

K, so i bought this inferno red 2004 pt cruiser gt with a premium sound system a year ago for my gf when someone totaled her focus, then we broke up and i kept the car because i was making the payments. Well ive but a crap load of asome bumper stickers on it, these awsome momo TEN-S black wheels on it, had the windows tinted, and every friday night me and my frreinds pile up into it and we go out cruisin and clubbing, i <3 this thing, we crank up the radio and roll all the windows down, its so much fun, i call it a chrysler party cruiser, i even actually have vynl stickers tht say party cruiser, and the way i take turns and sometimes DRIFT youd think the body was gonna fly off the chasis.

  • Worlds Best Kept Secret - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I bought the PT Cruiser because I was looking for a car with van capabilities but not a van appearance or van handling. I commute 150 miles round trip daily and the PT Cruiser is still a fun drive and easy handling vehicle. The stick shift gives more than enough get up and go and it can carry a huge load with the two back seats removed.
