Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Desert Delight! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought this car used (CARFAX showed one owner with low mileage.) I love and have always driven convertibles. This one has a very tight body due to the roll bar with very low noise and /or rattling for a rag top. I get about 24 mpg around town. It perfect top down in the Palm Springs autumn, winter and fall. For triple digit heat (100+F) in the desert summer, the triple insulated top and forceful a/c keep it very comfortable. The interior is roomy, even for a 62" guy like me. The "theater" seats put you in a higher position. I havent had a single repair and the turbo provides high performance when needed. Fun to drive, attracts attention (Ive had several offers to buy it) and reliable!

Have put over 4000 miles since purchase. While the gas mileage could be better, I am very happy with overall vehicle. A bit sluggish with AC on, once up to 65 mph, it will keep up with the pack. Fun to drive, good looking and quiet riding. Receive at least a compliment per day on style, looks, etc. A good car for individual transportation. Leather seats are great!

  • The most Practical of Convertibles - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This car is, by far, the most fun that Ive ever driven. The flashy body style coupled with its convertible top make it quite a looker out on the roads. The gas mileage is okay for a car...19/city & 26/HWY. If youre going to get this car, I would definitely invest in the turbo engine which will provide you with the kind of pickup you need to get up and go. I found that the regular 4cyl did not perform very well when going from 0 to highway speed. The convertible top is very easy to operate and takes less than 30 seconds to transform.

This is a plain-vanilla model, no turbo, 2.4L motor with automatic. In the first 2500 miles, it took 100 gallons of real gas (no alcohol additive, or whatever that is they put in their to supposedly reduce polllution.) The additive drops it about 10%. With AC on around town with the additive gas it gets 17-18mpg at 20K miles, 25 or 26 on highway with real gas gas mileage was disappointing, as the government estimates were 17-25 city and 22-30 highway. Am amazed at those reporting much higher gas mileage. The "headrest" is wrong for me & there was no way to get it out of there to put in a suitable one. I didnt like black top, but it was all that was offered. End of complaints.

I HAD ALWAYS wanted a PT Cruiser... until I bought one. I bought mine. Transmission Blew out at 50K on the way to vegas. Me and my kids were stuck in the desert. Car has FAILED on me about 3 times now... NOT safe for a Woman and kids. I love the style and am stuck with the PT... it has over 100k now that I have have thousands of dollars in repairs.

  • Best car yet - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have owned many cars. My PT cruiser convertible by far is the most enjoyable. The styling of this car does not get old. It looks more expensive than it is. I have a 5 speed and average close to 30 mpg. It is not the most powerful car I have had, but the enjoyment of this vehicle to me outweighs that one negative. It is very roomy for a convertible and I can fit 4 in mine very, very comfortably. The only problem I have had so far is that now, I want to buy a cheap used car to drive to work so my PT does not get dinged up and also to keep miles off of it. This is a great car for us 40 somethings that have to balance practicality with just plain old fun.

  • Nice Car! - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Comfortable, solidly built, and fun to drive. Seating/cargo configurations adaptable for many needs. Very dependable. I had to replace headlight stalk switch, but other than that, just normal wear items. Over 60,000 on original tires. Less road noise than most all other small cars. Handles very well. Ive been generally satisfied with this car.

I got rid in my Jeep Liberty for this car looking for better mileage. As it was a nice looking car and 0% the salesman talked me into it. I dont think I am getting any better mileage. I too have had with water/snow staining the seats, they look terrible. I have had my car at the dealer 5 times now over the last month. The power steering unit went out. I had also reported a leak. The first time was reported over-filling off fluid, continued leak. I believe an oil ring was replaced, still a leak. Today I am told the head gasket needs replaced. I will never buy a Cruiser/Chrysler vehicle ever. I am greatly dissapointed in what I cant wait to get rid of it!

  • I just love this car - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

My second convertible (first one a Mercury Capri turbo), and this one is absolutely FUN to drive. On the first day I drove it with the top down, I had two people walk up and talk to me about it. I found a great deal, and man am I happy with the purchase. Doesnt have great power, but who cares? I just love driving it, and its even a nice car with the top up. Not that I want to drive it that way much.
