Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Practical but costly - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have had the car since new and alway serviced at the dealer. I have 43000 miles on it and way to many things have gone wrong. Tie rod ends, water pump, air conditioning and transmission lines. The car rides good and is super practical to own. The amount of items you can haul with the seats out is remarkable. I am just tired of Chryslers bad reliablility. This is the only car I ever got an extended warranty with and I am glad I did. Oh yea, small 4 cyl with little performance and lousy gas mileage.

Overall disappointed with vehicle, gas mileage terrible for a 4 cylinder engine. Turns like a truck

  • Love the PT but want more reliability - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I loved the PT from the moment I saw it and bought one despite concerns about buying a Chrysler. Overall, I like the car but its reliability isnt what I want. The 1st 2 years were great, but then one little thing after another started going wrong.First the headlights wouldnt turn off-had to get the car jump started and take it in to the shop. Then the horn wouldnt work. Then it started overheating-had to get the car towed in 2 times for that. Then the brake lights wouldnt work-got them fixed 3 separate times. Replaced battery several times, replaced brakes. If it werent for these annoyances I would never buy another type of car-I absolutely love the ride, the look, the comfort, the room.

  • Our newest PT Cruiser - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This is our familys fourth PT Cruiser, a black 05 Limited with the "woody" treatment. We still have two PT Cruisers, an 04 plum (the wifes) and an 03 patriot blue standard shift (belonging to my business) - both of them basic models. We love this car, not only for its classic "retro" look, but because it is extremely comfortable to drive and functional. All are a joy to drive. We took our 05 on an 8,600 trip around the country in July-August 2005 with absolutely no problems (in fact, no problems in the total of 19,000 miles now on the odometer). I just hope the are still making the PT Cruiser when its time to trade in the 03 - but that wont be for a while.

Got this car for my sweet 16, and I love it! So fun to drive, a great starter car. Everyone told me that Pt Cruisers were for old people, but its surf blue color makes it very chic. Great to drive for long amounts of time and listen The Beatles in. :)

There isnt a car made that has as many after market add ons available. Adding to an already supurb automobile. Chrysler did this one right. The turbo has no lag and has a wonderful spooling up sound, handles as well as any sports car I have ever driven. I am totally in love with the performance and handling of this vehicle. 15 in tires on chrome rims add to the road handling manners as well as the 4 speed auto tranny with the shift matic function. Truly awsome and made with attention to detail unrivaled by other US manufacturers. Two thumbs way-way up for the GT Cruiser. Id buy another in a New York Second.

  • Good car for 3 years only - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I was driving PT cruiser since they first appeared in 2001. I loved this car. Utility, fun to drive, look, everything is good. Except reliability. After 3 year and 15,000 miles I replaced rack and pinion. At 30,000 replaced computer, engine harness and other details. If you want this car, you must buy extended warranty, or better yet, keep it for only 3 years. I paid too much for not having extended warranty and Chrysler corp does not care. Finally got rid of it and no more Chryslers for me. Only imports.

  • Its a hoot! - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I had been considering the PT for a year or so, but the test drive in the 2003 GT sold me. The responsiveness in handling and engine response were way beyond expectations.

  • Back For Seconds - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought an 02 PT base, 5spd, ac, non-turbo with 11K miles, drove it for 33K miles. Replaced wiper motor under warranty. Traded it in on a new 07 PT base Auto. trans., ac, Sirius radio, non-turbo. Replaced camshaft positioning sensor under warranty. Currently has 25k miles on it. Never added oil to either PT in 58K mile of driving. Gas mileage for both was 18 (city) and 35 ( highway) Great retro styling and plenty of room. Excellent visibility in all directions.
