Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Its got Giddyup - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Although the gas mileage is low, this snappy wagon has kick. It rapidly accelerates from a dead stop, something that is crucial in L.A. traffic. I have actually beaten a Porche in accelerating from a dead stop...my car was first to overtake the other..but then, of course, the Porche overtook me pretty soon thereafer, even though we both started at the same time. No joke or embellishment. I was astonished...and proud of my bulbous wagon: The Vanilla Bomber.

  • Good car for the money - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I am not sure how people are getting less than 20 mpg. I have the standard engine, automatic transmission, and am getting 22 city and 25 highway MPG. You cannot drive this car like its a Corvette. Revving the engine up to 4.5K rpm routinely isnt your friend. I bought the car used with approximately 50k miles, and am really enjoying it. No issues to date so far, and its a joy to drive. Styling is retro, which is a huge change from my prior car (Lincoln Continental). The engine is a bit sluggish, but it is not a blemish on the enjoyment factor. I have experienced a bit of engine vibration at higher RPMs, but its not too noticeable. Fit/finish is fine...no issues.

  • Turbo is the only way to go - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Looks and is smaller then regular PT. Handles nicely on accelaration because of turbo. Regular gas saves at pump a bit. Younger feel to it. Deck space really small, but compensation is the freedom of the convertiable. Top easy to open and close. Safety bar looks cool. Ride is definetily a sports car. Front wheel drive only maybe not for all. Seems air tight when closed up while driving.

  • In Luv with my PT - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The styling of the car rekindled a "need-to-have" feeling that I had not felt since I bought my first 240Z back in the early 70s. I finally found my Patriot Blue Limited in January 2001 (when dealer stock was non-existant and the norm was to price it at up to $5000 over MSRP) but I had to drive over 200 miles away from home to get a reasonable price. Then the fun began ... New Tires (Potenza RE730), Shifter Kit, Headlamps etc. Still get people doing doubletakes when they see the PT go by ... Buy it, Drive it, Love It !!!

  • No Regrets So Far - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This was a used car purchase. I love the style & design of the car but everything else is pretty much a disappointment. The gas mileage is poor, the seats are uncomfortable and stained, the window openers should be on the door, making a U-turn is a joke, the car shakes a bit at 65 MPH, and it is hard to see out from the back and front sloping window design (very dangerous). Luckily I have had no problems with the engine, steering or anything electrical. (keeping my fingers crossed).

  • My second - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Bought my first PT Cruiser on line, preproduction. Picked it up May 12, 2000. I had to have but two repairs. After 145,000 miles I decided it was time. Looked at lots of others but the comfort I am a big man) and style I just love.

  • Car is nice but needs more spice - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

The car is fun to drive but lacks in some amenities. I miss having electronic seats and stereo controls on the wheel. Also miss having electronic gas countdown miles to empty. The converrtible top is hard to close, I have to hang on it to clip it back in place. The car has the worst turning radius that Ive ever encountered. I have to make 3 pt turns all day!

  • PT Dream Cruiser - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I have found that the Dream Cruiser is the most fun car I have owned in over 20 years (besides the 1984 Chrysler Mark Cross Convertible that I still own). Its fun to drive and listen to the Sirrus Radio.

  • A Good Vehicle - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

We purchased out PT Cruiser new in 2002 to replace an old ford that was about worn out. My wife picked out the car and I didnt care for it much until I had to transport some building material to the house. Although a small looking car I was surprised at the open space it has when the seats were folded down and the amount of weight it would carry. Was almost like an inclosed pick up and still drove very well.
