Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

Great cruising car. It is fun to drive and handles great. Weve not had any problems with it at all until now almost 5 years into it a linkage on the gears went out (manual transmission).

Ive owned many many cars and my other car is a heavily modified Corvette, yet Im impressed with the mechanical and visual quality of this Inferno Red Woody. It gets so much attention from the ladies that I wish they had made them back in "the day." The gas mileage isnt as good as my 400 hp Vette, and it isnt fast, yet it has yet to show any wear or any problems. The looks would have worn thin though, if this car wasnt the most practical thing Ive ever had. The few complaints I read from other reviewers seem to be related to having bought poorly equipped versions.

  • MY Car - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

After putting a lot of money into getting my paid off Buick LeSabre fixed, then having the CHECK ENGINE light come on again, I had had enough. So I went and got me a brand new PT Cruiser with only 22 miles on it! Ive always loved the look of these cars and they are even more fun to drive than I could have imagined. It is so roomy and spacious inside even though it may not look like it. The PT Cruiser is listed on uglycars.com which offended me at first, but I dont care. I absolutely love my plum PT Cruiser!

  • Love my GT PT convert - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Bought the GT PT Convert in April 2010, it is a 2006 and the owner was a senior, car had only 7,900 miles on it! So far just needed a new drivers door mirror- it broke and dealership covered it. Gas is definitely an issue, but if you want the extra horse you gotta pay. This car is flawless for five years old. Only use it three or four times a week, plan to keep garaged and immaculate. Hope to preserve as a collector item. Chrysler only made the GT Conv for two years 05 and 06. Have orig build sheet and window sticker- love this car and plan to keep into its antique years.

This is a Great car! I Love the design on both the inside and outside. The seat is the right height for someone in a wheelchair to slide into, without feelng like they are either; falling in or climbing up into it. And the seat belt is easy to buckle for people who can only use one hand.

Ordered new,Have had this car for 5 months now. It has made several 800 mile plus trips and NO problems. I had a 2001 PT (also ordered new) and the difference in power is unbelievable! No rattles with either PT. No turbo lag with this car, just push the gas pedal and go. Mileage is good, Power is good, insurance is cheap, corners nicely, whats not to like??
