Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

I liked the PT Cruisers design since it was unveiled at the auto shows in 99. I bought a "Classic Edition" (base) 2003 Steel Blue Pearl. Its a nice car and the base model is better equipped than many other base model vehicles on the road today.

  • Will be getting a 2nd Cruiser - 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Have manual transmission, & has been the best MPG of any 4 cylinder vehicle I have owned - 33 mpg is top, but consistently get 30 mpg. (Keep records at every purchase.) Removed the back seats (takes a minute) & gas mileage went up by aprox. 3 mpg. Actually feels better on road without back seats. Hauled a washer, dishwasher & 8 ft 2x4s in it with no problems (hatch closed). Has more cargo room than Jeeps & Chevy Trackers. No repairs (normal maintenance) or problems. Do my own oil change, & love the access to oil filter and plug. Wish all vehicles were that accessible. Plugs: only use standard, not platinum: these will cause running problems. Love it and want to get 2nd!

  • MY VERY OWN PT CRUISER - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have had a ton of fun driving my jet black PT.CRUISER. It looks awsome when its cleaned up. Everywhere I go everyone is staring trying to see in, to see whos driving it. Now everyone knows its mine, I live in a small town so of course evertime they see me they have to ask about it. I was the first to get one here, now there are 4 more in my town, but not like mine. Every time me and my husband decide to go somewhere we always chose my PT. to drive. I will not go anywhere unless Im in it. To sum it all up its the funnest and greatest vehicle I have ever owned.

  • PT Touring Convertible - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Purchased April 6 2004. This car has a blind spot the size of an elephant, use of the side mirrors may help to correct this. I love the intuitive and ergonomically well-placed control buttons on the dash. Lots of head and leg room – front and rear. The colour matched sport bar looks great. The cute little trunk is a tad awkward to access. The 2.4L Standard Turbo, using regular gas, provides plenty of power for city and highway driving. Assembled in Toluca, Mexico. . I love it!

  • INFO ON PT CONVERTIBLE - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

If a person buys a PT Cruiser Convertible that is a turble. They are going to pay a lot of money for car because it uses up more gas, but the good thing is. It takes off fast because it has a fast pick up!

  • Used 2002 PT Cruiser - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I was always against getting a cruiser. When looking for a new car, I was not gonna get a cruiser. I needed a car that I can carry 2 large dog crates or 3 child seats when I pick up my boyfriends cousins from the daycare. I thought this car was too small and looks like a hearse. There is incredible space in the cruiser. The best part is that it doesnt take but maybe a min. to cool down a hot car. My boyfriend drove it and now wants to trade in his car for one as well. Its an awesome car and Id recommend it to everyone.
