Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

I had been considering the PT for a year or so, but the test drive in the 2003 GT sold me. The responsiveness in handling and engine response were way beyond expectations.

  • My Favorite Car Ever! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This is my 2nd Cruiser. Leased an 02 Limited for 3 1/2 yrs and liked it so much I bought this one. I had no trouble at all with the first one for over 23,000 miles and not with this one after 2000 miles. Even after after 4 yrs I still like to look at it, and smile whenever I see another one. The 180 HP turbo has great pickup, a big improvement over the base engine. I also love the look and functionality of the interior (glad I got the 05-I dont like the int/ext changes on the 06). I cant imagine driving another car-I hope this one lasts forever!

This is a fun car to drive and with the turbo it will really get going. Two major gripes that I have is one, the blind spots are insane on this vehical and two, the cup holders will only hold a standard size can or bottle. If you drink fountain drinks that have cups that are larger than average like a big gulp you are out of luck. Other than that the car runs and drives great in my opinion. One other thing, if you smoke dont forget to bring your own ash tray, because it is not equipped with one.

I love almost all aspects of my PT. My only negative is gas mileage and I miss gas tank on drivers side. I drive mostly city but feel the gas issue could be greatly improved on. As for the window controls, they arent clunky, it just takes time to get used to reaching for the middle dash. Handles like a dream, great on quick maneuvering. Drove a mini-van for 20 years and am pleased with the cargo versatility. Visibility is really nice as seating is higher than in a comparable small vehicle, Seat height makes it very easy to get in and out of. Love the fun styling. Id miss the towel bar as I have it decorated!!! Very easy to hand wash. Next goal: Limited Edition - Loaded - Cant wait!!

  • great car noisy engine - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Excellent vehicle. Great brakes and yes the 4 cyl. does have enough power unless you continually climb steep mountains. The engine is a little to loud in a buzzy 4 cyl. way for this type of vehicle.

  • Desert Delight! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought this car used (CARFAX showed one owner with low mileage.) I love and have always driven convertibles. This one has a very tight body due to the roll bar with very low noise and /or rattling for a rag top. I get about 24 mpg around town. It perfect top down in the Palm Springs autumn, winter and fall. For triple digit heat (100+F) in the desert summer, the triple insulated top and forceful a/c keep it very comfortable. The interior is roomy, even for a 62" guy like me. The "theater" seats put you in a higher position. I havent had a single repair and the turbo provides high performance when needed. Fun to drive, attracts attention (Ive had several offers to buy it) and reliable!

  • Woody Cruiser - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Have put over 4000 miles since purchase. While the gas mileage could be better, I am very happy with overall vehicle. A bit sluggish with AC on, once up to 65 mph, it will keep up with the pack. Fun to drive, good looking and quiet riding. Receive at least a compliment per day on style, looks, etc. A good car for individual transportation. Leather seats are great!
