Overview & Reviews
Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.
As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.
Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.
Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.
Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.
In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

I should have had one of these all along - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Michael Smith - May 19 - 11:43 amI have a 2005 base, 5 speed, convertible. I cant believe how much attention I get with it. Everyone wants to go for a ride. People thank its a $30,000.00 car and when I tell them that I paid around $18,000.00 for it they ask me if I got it used. nope! The 5 speed is fun and shifts so smoothe. It could use a little more power but with this car you just want to kick back and take it easy anyway.. It rides and handles great. I expected alot of noise with a conv. but I was so supprised at how quiet it is. The way you sit and the way everything is layed out makes me feel like the car was made for me. Alot of thinking went into it. the only thing I would trade it for is the gtversion

I LOVE MY CRUISER - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By crafter - May 14 - 10:00 amI have never had a car that is so versatile and fun to drive. I have owned two P.T.s, my first was a 2001 Silver Limited, and now I have a Cranberry Touring. I use it more for a mini van for my craft business. Soooo comfortable to travel in and drives like a dream.

Very Practical Urban Vehicle - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Edward Ryan - May 14 - 10:00 amThis is a super little car. Ther interior is deceptively roomy, and it is very practical to handle almost any house hold transportation need. It is great for a retired couple, as the seating arrangement can accomodate almost anything you have to carry. Loading and unloading groceries is easier than a car with a standard trunk, and that little back deck table thingey will keep your valuables out of sight, and makes a great picnic table when traveling. The back seat room is amazing.

2 year review - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By greg - May 12 - 1:06 amI bought the car in november of 2007. It is the 2.4l 5 sp manual. My ONLY complaint is that the bumpers came with tape marks on them which looks like crap. The seats are somewhat uncomfortable but still better then most Japanese cars. For a 4 banger it has good pickup and go, though i hear the automatic is a different story. Its front bumper is really low so be careful with high curbs on driveways. love the amount of space inside and the versatility and number of configurations you can do with the inside. I fit 40 8ft 2X4s with all the doors and windows closed! No major problems as of yet and i have 46K on her, so hears hoping it stays that way!

PT Cruiser- Great Car - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Janet Keyes - May 9 - 10:33 pmOur three-year-old PT Cruiser is fun to drive locally, and comfortable on a trip. We get up to 29 MPG on trips, and about 20+ locally. It has plenty of giddyup for city on-ramps, and good head room in both front and back seats for people up to 64. Friends are always pleasantly surprised when riding in this car. Its one of the best cars we ever had.

Our newest PT Cruiser - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By D.G.J. - April 27 - 6:10 pmThis is our familys fourth PT Cruiser, a black 05 Limited with the "woody" treatment. We still have two PT Cruisers, an 04 plum (the wifes) and an 03 patriot blue standard shift (belonging to my business) - both of them basic models. We love this car, not only for its classic "retro" look, but because it is extremely comfortable to drive and functional. All are a joy to drive. We took our 05 on an 8,600 trip around the country in July-August 2005 with absolutely no problems (in fact, no problems in the total of 19,000 miles now on the odometer). I just hope the are still making the PT Cruiser when its time to trade in the 03 - but that wont be for a while.

Gt Cruiser is a HIT & Mighty FAST - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Rick - April 17 - 5:50 pmThere isnt a car made that has as many after market add ons available. Adding to an already supurb automobile. Chrysler did this one right. The turbo has no lag and has a wonderful spooling up sound, handles as well as any sports car I have ever driven. I am totally in love with the performance and handling of this vehicle. 15 in tires on chrome rims add to the road handling manners as well as the 4 speed auto tranny with the shift matic function. Truly awsome and made with attention to detail unrivaled by other US manufacturers. Two thumbs way-way up for the GT Cruiser. Id buy another in a New York Second.
