Overview & Reviews
Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.
As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.
Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.
Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.
Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.
In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

Fun! - 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Kelly - September 30 - 5:16 amI love it! I got the metallic black and the finish is beautiful. The interior is unique and stylish. The pick up is good and its full of pep. Not only that but its so easy to park! The handy lift gate and fold away seats allow my Rottweiler to come along! Its roomier than it looks its an eye catcher. I dont care if its a little bit harder on the gas than some - its far better than the SUV I just unloaded and its way funner to drive. It works for me :)

2 PTs in my garage! - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By JDGibbs - September 21 - 5:30 pmI bought my first base model PT 4/15/00. It was the first privately owned PT in Fargo and only 1 of 2 in town for about 6 months. GREAT car! Traded in a 300ZX and sold an Explorer to get it. Sparks went out early, did have to do the radiator replacement at about 100k. Timing belt made it to 173k (OOPS). Replaced alternator at about 169k. Now the head gasket is out at 174k and time to get into a new car. Lo and behold I found "Silver Stud Deuce" PT but this is the 2001 Limited Edition with only 23,200 miles on it! What a gem! Somebody along the way didnt take the hood stand off b4 trying to shut it but thats the only blemish. Show room quality and even smells new!

Couldnt be Happier - 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Very Satisfied - September 19 - 2:40 amI gave my 2001 PT Cruiser to my Grandson. It had less than 50,000 trouble-free miles on it, and looked like new. I bought a 2010 because it is the last year theyll make it. Its everything Id hoped it would be, and more. I got a great deal on it, so purchased a lifetime warranty on it. I drive American cars, and have for most of my life. Theyre more than competitive with the Japanese and Korean cars, and I happy to keep the money in this country.

Try the Chevy HHV - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Gaguy - September 13 - 2:46 pmI have had more problems with this car than all my other vehicles combined. First off, the head gasket leaked oil before 300 miles and had to be replaced. Then the ventilation system recirculation door opens on its own because the underpowered engine is not capable of providing enough vacuum to keep it closed when going uphill. The infamously bad Chrysler automatic transmission went out at 31,700 miles and had to be rebuilt. The mechanics had the audacity to suggest someone that I put something in the transmission to cause it to fail. If they really thought that they should have refused repairs and given me the chance to take them to court but I think they knew they would lose.

Nice car - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser
By Dennis - September 7 - 9:50 amMy Pt is my go to school car. I drive 60 miles day, 40 miles interstate, 20 miles town driving, I average 28 to32 mpg at 65 mph and depending on the weather . I put a k and n air filter and bosch platinum spark plugs. This brought my mpg up 4 to 6 mpg. Love the looks and cargo space by folding up the back seats, you can haul a lot of stuff. I like the head room 4 adults can ride very comfortable, and I get around traffic easier.
