Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • The Versatile Car - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I love this car and its versatility. I have an older dog and it is a blessing to be able to fold back the back seats and let her enter the car through the back doors. She then has plenty of room to move around as we take a trip. It also has tons of storage room, which is great. Being a teacher and having to cart your stuff back and forth at the beginning and end of every school year, you need a lot of room and this car has it. I love driving my PT Cruiser.

This is a great family car with room enough for adults to sit comfortably in the back seat. The hatch back is wonderful and roomy. Plus, it looks cool and is a nice smooth ride.

With less than 200 miles this is probably not a real review, but I am quite impressed with the feel of the car when driving and the fun spirit of the appearance. I just gave up a 98 Corolla, which I loved but getting in and out became harder and harder as I age. I fingd this a very worthy replacement, which easily gets rid of the problem of climbing out of a smalll car.

Only 1200 miles on the clock but a real pleasure to drive. Performance is more than adequate, fit and finish outstanding for a car in this class. With incentives and rebates, this is one of the best values on the road today.

  • 25000 miles and still the best - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Im on my third year with this car, and its the best Ive ever owned. Its not only fun to drive, its a great hauler for my dogs, their crates, etc. Its amazing to have a smaller car - which I like - with big- car room. (I know its classified as a truck, but it sure doesnt ride truck- like!) Now, Id keep this car forever if they hadnt come out with that incredible- looking convertible. Will I get one? Well see.

My 2004 PT Cruiser is wonderful. It rides real smooth, and is very comfortable. To me, it is a combination between an old 1920s vehicle and a new sports car. That is what makes it beautiful. If I can I do plan to own another one when mine is no longer of use.

Classy, comfortable, great pick up and handling both in the city and highway, great passing ability. Cargo space? I had a 4X 5" solid maple dinner table in the back of mine. Everyone who wants the versatility of a mom-tank and the ride of a big car with damn good lines should get one. RR seat warmers for the leather would be a HUGE + like in my Pacifica. I want the next DREAM CRUISER

  • Love this car!! - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have always wanted a PT Cruiser, and the opportunity finally presented itself, I am thrilled! I own and ride a Harley, and feel the same excitement and anticipation of customizing this car and owning it forever, that I did and do about my bike. I have found myself giggling outloud while driving, hopefully the tinted windows hide my apparent newly aquired insanity :p.

  • 05 PT Cruiser Convertible - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I got my PT Cruiser convertible in April of 05. I always liked the PT from when it first came out. This car is the cutest car Ive ever owned. It drives great, the turbo has great power especially when merging into traffic on the major highways. The a/c works great, all electronics work well. I like how when the top goes down all the windows do too at the same time. I would recommend this car to anyone who likes a convertible. I get alot of compliments on the car all the time. It is a definite head turner. The model I have is the Dream Cruiser Series which makes it alittle different then the usual PT, being that the convertble top color matched that of the car. A great choice in car selection

  • Great enjoyment - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

We fell in love with it in car magazine pictures. Full blown love when we actually saw one on the lot. Took it home to try and it has not left. Great fun, great ease to enjoy the top down. Great purformance and gas mileage balance. The turbo is wonderful. Only down side has been having to replace the front brakes after only 18K miles of normal city driving. We simply love the little thing that is not so little and really works for us. Drives great, looks great and we get great comments on it every where we go. Thanks Chrysler for contintinueing to put out exciting cars. I just wish I could have a HEMI in it.
