Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Constant Repairs - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

When we first purchased the PT it seemed like a great vehicle. The gas mileage was always in the high 20s. Had maintanence preformed at the scheduled time and thought we were taking good care of it. Once the problems started the milage suffered and is around 22. At 28000 had the headgasket replace to take care of an oil leak at 48000 replaced the right and left lower control arms and bushings at 56000 the battery shorted out leaving the vehicle total dead at 58000 replaced spark plugs and wires and now the transmission seems to be having problems. Most of the miles are from the 60 mile round trip to work on the open highway. Never owned a vehicle with so many problems with this low of milage

  • Had to have one! - 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I ordered a 2008 PT Conv. with a 5 speed for my wife to replace her tiny Hyundai Accent. We wanted a fun car. Even though it was December and we are in the North the car handles great on the snow. The gears are a little closer in range than her Hyundai and the shifter has a better action. The car handles great even though it is a little porky and we like to hustle the car. The fuel economy could be better as we are getting about 26 mpg right now. After break in and warmer weather that number should be better. We love the insulated top. Its quieter than the Hyundai and its just as warm. YES essentials seats are great, coffee doesnt soak in!

  • Get a Turbo! It Rocks! - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Reminds me of the 40 & 50s and we modified our cars. I cant think of a thing Id change except for a boost guage which I will take care of. The PT Turbo is quiet except when you pull the trigger. Hit the accellator at 20 MPH and you will get the surprise of your life. The wheels will spin, you are nailed in your seat and the motor screams. WOW!

  • Love it with 2 exceptions - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Bought it for looks and cheap transportation. Satisfied with looks and roominess, not with gas mileage. Averaged 27 on a 2100 mile trip, expected much better from a 4 cyl. Also, the horn sticks. Had it repaired while under warranty. Lasted about 3 months - still sticks. Reading other reviews, seems like a inherent problem, but Ill live with it. All things considered, yeah, Id buy another one.

  • A fast Cruiser - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

We already liked the Ltd, but this one is the best. It has all the versatility and room advantages of a mini- van/SUV/wagon (except a third row of seats which is useless anyway) and performs like a sports car (~7 seconds for 0-60 mph).

  • Fair Car To Drive - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The steering is not as easy to whip when you are in tight spaces, I traded my 2005 Dodge Dakota with the V8 and all of the goodies for this car I always wanted it since it was produce in 2000 but at the time it was very overpriced. The seats stain even when the snow hit it. Also very bad trade in value.

My Mom has had a PT Crusier since 2001. I was looking for a car and decided to look at the 2006 PT. This is a wonderful car with so much character. The upgrades that have been done since 2001 are amazing. The retro look really works well. I cannot wait to save money on gas this will be a huge savings.

I was dealing with several dealers before my purchase and Huling was upfront and very informative. Some dealers tried to sell me something I didnt want or need. I got the car, price, color and options I asked for, no more no less. It even will match my motorhome.
