Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Very good overall car - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Styling inside and out. Roomy, especially with the removable rear seats. Upright seating position. So far it has been quite reliable.

  • First new car - 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I had this car only 3 days before it had to go to the shop. Over a six month period it was in the shop 7 times for check engine light. The first 6 months I owned it I had to have a rental car a total of 2 weeks. These cars are very poorly built (in Mexico). Also, there is a lot of road noise. The stereo is barely audible on the highway. I will never buy another Chrysler.

  • More than just a pretty face!!! - 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Ive gotten LOTS of compliments on my PTs looks, but the car gets high marks for utility and drivability too. Its really fun to drive...engine is smooooth, and the 150 horsepower is PLENTY for me. I have no problem cruising on the freeway at 70 mph.

  • My PT Cruiser - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This is my everyday drive to work car. Mine is the five-speed stick wagon. The edmunds review does not do the standard engine justice when paired with the manual trans. It has more torque and off-the-line power than the 95 Neon I used to drive. This is a nice car to drive in most any traffic with the hydraulic clutch and a nice shifter feel. This is no hot-rod by any means but it is a nice, useful flexible car.

  • PT Cruiser is Reliable - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser is a very reliable car with routine maintenance. I have owned a different model car with each of the 5 new car purchases I have made in my lifetime. I would rate the Cruiser as one of the top. It is very reliable and has not had any major repairs. I stay very close to the maintenance schedules and have driven this car all over the US in every sort of weather without issues. I plan to give this car to my soon to be licensed teen. The leg room and posture makes you feel like your driving a mini-van (I had an knee injury and a stretched out leg wasnt feasible). The ability to remove the back seats make it as convenient as a van if you need to carry lots of cargo.

  • Fun and versatile, with minor flaws - 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Rock-solid reliable: I owned the car for three years, and had no problems at all with it. It took a while to get used to the limited rear visibility, but that was no problem after a week or so. Its underpowered - even with a 5 speed manual. Handling is *terrible* in adverse conditions - especially snow. Strange masking tape marks appeared on the corners of the rear bumper. All that being said, Id buy this car again in a second if I needed something that was both stylish and had the room to pack stuff in.

  • PT Cruiser - Happy in Akron - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

My 2005 PT is the third one Ive purchased. Ive liked all of them. They are easy to maintain and are reliable. The only problems Ive encountered are tire/wheel related. As the chrome deteriorates, the beading on tires allow air to leak out. The local Goodyear dealer burnishes the rims and that usually solves it. Its very easy to change oil and filters on PTs.

  • Love my PT!!!! - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I bought this car in 2006 with only 2800 miles on it! I got very lucky. I have always had great luck with the car. The only problem I have had is that the light cover for the windows roll up fell out. My PT has been the most reliable car I have owned!!!

  • My favorite car ever! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Ive loved these cars since they came out and finally got a base model 2005 5- speed. It is the most fun I have had driving ever. With the manual, there is no need for a turbo, because this thing takes off when you hit the gas. I love the roominess, the feel, the drivability of this car. And I got a very cool color in Electric Blue which still turns heads! A great car!
