Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

Too bad I didnt find out until 3 years later! Replaced power steering pump, ABS is out, sensors burning out all over, replaced pricey turbo belts in first year, my dash looks like a Christmas tree with all the failure lights I have had to respond to. I love the car, but I hate the money I have to put into a car I am still paying for. Oh, and it has the turning radius of a brick. But love the look and heated seats and all the really fantastic extras -- a ton of room, really great for moving!

Totaled my Subaru Forester and loved it, but wanted something a little more flashy at this time of life and the corvette was not an option. Absolutely love my red PT....It has all the bells and I like the seat adjustments, as I am short. A month after I bought mine, I sat in on my sons purchase of a turbo blue. Our garage is now a PT "nest" with Daddys Exployer parked under the carport.

Wife picked this car out while driving by the dealership. Test drive was satisfactory, price was right, wife was right, traded my 97 Stratus ES. Overall, after a year, quite satisfactory. Bad fit on the doors, rowdy motor, so-so gas mileage, all disappear when the top goes down. Then its all grins (and compliments from bystanders).

I have only had this car for a couple of days, but I love it! I have owned a Jetta for 6 years and this is WAY better. I love the ride, the interior and everything about it. It gets the same gas mileage as my Jetta which was 30 miles fwy. You cant go wrong. I do see some of the things people in their other reviews had said, but they arent annoying after you drive a Jetta.

Great pickup with the turbo engine - Ive left a few Beemer drivers with their mouths hanging open on uphill freeway merges! Excellent use of interior space - I fit a 80 inch long bookcase in my Cruiser, no problem! Great legroom - even for larger, taller folks. I give it an "A" for excellent workmanship and I work in the Quality Assurance profession. Oh, and Ive met nice people since folks keep asking me questions about my car.

  • More Fun Per Dollar! - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

This car is a pleasure to drive, to look at and to own. With 5 spd, it is sprightly although it labors at bit with the AC on. Most comfortable convertible Ive ever been in with the top down. Unbelievably quiet top up or down. Maybe the most comfortable seats Ive ever had. Real room for adults in back seat. Stereo in base version comes only with cassette, but who needs CDs when you have an iPod that plays through the deck?! Generous power outlets and cup holders. Ive had more strangers comment and ask about this car than any Ive ever owned. Base version had everthing I wanted and nothing I didnt: i.e. love having the thermometer on the rearview mirror. Dollar for dollar the best!

  • I Love This Car!!! - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I had a 2006 Chrysler Sebring that was hit and totaled by a drunk driver. I needed a new car, so I decided on a PT Cruiser. I have the Touring Edition with a 5-speed manual, and I love it. Even though it has the 4-cylinder engine, it will get up and go fast. Love the space, and love the dashboard design. Gas mileage could be better, but thats more me than the car. I also love the color, Opal Metallic. Overall, the car is a great ride and versatile too!

I traded in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for this fun, zippy little car after renting one while on vacation. I have always wanted a convertible, and living in Austin, we have the perfect weather for it, seeing as we really only have about 2 weeks of winter here. It is such a blast to leave work, put the top down and take the long way home. I get lots of comments on how cute it is compared to the standard 4 door model.
