Chevrolet sells an impressively wide range of vehicles, from subcompact hatchbacks to huge vans and SUVs. If you're looking for a reasonably priced vehicle, odds are that Chevy will have something to fit your needs.

Chevrolet got its start in 1911. After William C. Durant had been ousted from General Motors, he joined forces with Swiss-born racecar driver Louis Chevrolet to found the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The company's first offering was the Classic Six. Introduced in 1912, this five-passenger touring sedan could top 65 mph, fast for the time. Chevrolet's storied bowtie logo -- reportedly inspired by the wallpaper of a Paris hotel room that Durant stayed at -- made its first appearance in 1914.

By 1918, Chevrolet's profitability allowed Durant to purchase enough shares in GM to regain control. Chevrolet became another division of GM, and was its largest volume division by the mid-1920s. By 1927, Chevrolet outsold rival Ford, with sales in excess of 1 million units.

In the mid-1930s Chevrolet introduced independent front suspension, which provided a smoother ride over the rough roads of the day. The 1940s saw continued success with affordable coupes, sedans and pickup trucks catering to American families, farmers and businessmen.

By the mid-1950s, Chevrolet, GM's entry-level division, had added a V8 engine, power steering and brakes, power windows and air-conditioning to its list of available features, allowing luxury for those on a tighter budget. Around this time the iconic Bel Air model -- available in coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon body styles -- proved very popular. The company introduced its alluring Corvette in 1953; the vehicle was the first mass-produced car with a fiberglass body.

The 1960s saw the unveiling of the popular, air-cooled Corvair compact, which held the distinction of being the first domestic production car with all-around independent suspension. That decade also witnessed the launch of the compact Nova, the midsize Chevelle and the sporty Camaro, the latter Chevrolet's answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. The Camaro proved an instant hit, comprising 10 percent of Chevrolet's total sales in 1967, its first year of production.

In the 1970s, Chevy responded to changing preferences by introducing small cars like the Vega and the Chevette, and by downsizing larger models such as the Caprice and Malibu. The company combated the market domination of foreign nameplates in the 1980s by rolling out the Cavalier. By the end of that decade, trucks and SUVs had started to become increasingly popular with the general consumer, and the brand's mid- and full-size models continue to this day to be some of the most popular on the road.

The '90s and the early 2000s saw the company raising the performance bar with its Corvette (notably the Z06 and, later, ZR1 variants) and reincarnated Impala SS. Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck and Tahoe/Suburban SUVs continued to be hits as well. By 2010, the Camaro had returned to the lineup after a seven-year hiatus.

Modern times have seen Chevrolet make significant improvements in its small and midsize car models and introduce the Volt plug-in hybrid. The latter provides a nearly 40-mile range on electric power alone, and adds to the company's already well-rounded lineup of cars, trucks and SUVs. Though today's marketplace is very demanding, Chevrolet seems poised to remain a power player through its affordable and innovative vehicles.

  • Dont Spend Your Money! - 1995 Chevrolet Corsica

We bought this as a second car the day before we got married. It had a little over 35000 miles on it when we purchased it. We had it for a year and a half then it just crapped out on us. First we had to replace the headgaskets because the radiator fluid was leaking into the oil: $650. Next came the battery and alternator: $250. Followed by 3 tires: $200. Then followed by an igniton switch: $400. We have finally just decided to trade it in and get a new car! We might as well have car payments as much as we spend on repairs! The car still stalls for no reason!

Well where do I start. Of course I understand i bought this suv used from a private party in USED conditions. I purchased this truck about 2 months ago with 180,000 on it currently has 186,000 on the dash as of yesterday. Seeing how this is my first suv and Chevy I was hesitant on getting it in the first place. I have the LTZ model and every light on the dash has come on one time or another. Last night the check engine light and Stabilitrak light was flashing randomly driving down the highway. Googled the issue as soon as i got home and was given everything from loose wires to bad battery , could be fuel module, sensor on the brake pedal for the cruise control. So i read some more on the subject and 10 other things that it could also be causing this to happen. Here is a list of stuff that stopped working in the last month : drivers side running light is out, the rear hatch and glass dont open when you push the button, the air shock system is junk, tps on both front tires went out, air bag sensor isnt working, i can go on and on. Im learning that Im just one of many people with all the exact same issues that this has happened to. I drove Ford trucks before this and was giving Chevy a chance thinking this was a nice car. I was so WRONG. Im gonna have to put it up for sale take 2 grand loss and go find another Ford truck. I will never in my life buy another Chevrolet again as long as Im alive. Save your money and time dont buy a 2007 Chevy Tahoe at all.

  • Biggest Mistake - 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Before you get this car just do not. I wish someone would have told me or gave me a heads up or I would have done more investigative work on the issues with this car. Drove it initially off the lot with no issues except slow acceleration but it only has 4-cylinders so I get it. few months in the idle started acting up, then the reverse went out on the vehicle. Got the transmission changed under the CarMax warranty then the jerking started. The dealership insisted that I come in to get the recall done to my "high powered fuel pump" then the car just fell apart. The vehicle kills in main stream traffic. Seems as though the gas is not getting to where it needs to be. Then the heater went out and my auto start wont work now. The dealership that did the recall stated that the issue was not there fault and I would have to pay for diagnostic or parts and labor since there is no longer a warranty. Worse buy and I will never get another Chevy again.

  • auto engine stop/start - 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

I traded for the equinox because it has a power lift gate. It also has dark glass in the back doors and lift gate that you cant see thru at night. It has a backup camera but its too bright. I cant see anything on the screen at night, but it,s OK in the day time. The reason for the low marks is the new feature called AUTO ENGINE STOP/START. I was not told about this feature. If i knew about this, I would not have traded for this equinox. This is the dumbest thing that I ever seen on a car. You pull up to a 4 way stop and the motor dies. When you release the break the motor restarts about a half second later. This is wrong to have something like this feature added to the car and not tell anyone about it. I know that it will cost big money for starters and batteries after the warranty runs out.

  • The Lemon of all Lemons! - 2005 Chevrolet Uplander

Since the day thiw minivan was purchased it has been trouble. Zero confidence when driving long distances. There is a pinging sound (safety one presumes) that comes on when the read slide door opens and never stops when it is closed. Dealership has been worthless in resolving the issue. I will never buy a Chevy again.

  • Worst decision Ive ever made. - 2016 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

Bought this vehicle with 2 miles on it, have had several occasions the brakes go out randomly, the electronic navi goes out randomly, and the engine is terrible. im now in a battle with the dealership because the engine has [non-permissible content removed] as well as many other customers but they will not waranty my vehicle because i didnt have the oil serviced at the dealership. WORST CAR BUY EVER, and all the Chevy vehicles Ive bought this one has definitely made me consider kia or honda the next time i purchase a vehicle. (Ive owned an Impala, Camaro, Silverado, Cavalier)

  • Lemonaide is made GM - 2012 Chevrolet Cruze
    By -

Car was great for first 60,000 miles than all h_____ broke out for most which the factory and dealership provided little support. When heat is on strong smell of antifreeze though intermittent at gets stronger as the fan runs. On Star was great when works. It to failed and to expensive to repair. I have invested over $5,000.00 in other emission repairs over the last 10,000 miles. Many repairs the same, but just out of warranty per the dealer. Best if the government had just let GM fold. They make a terrible product.

  • Very roomy-lots of rattles & problems - 1999 Chevrolet Suburban
    By -

This is a great SUV for long road trips. Very roomy and can hold lots of cargo. Other than that, it is not a good choice in my opinion. Plan on spending much time and money at the local mechanic. Also plan on having many rattles, squeaks and wind noise. Purchased a used Suburban rather than new to avoid having a car payment but quarterly repairs have made this vehicle almost as expensive as a new Suburban. I would recommend the new body style if you must purchase a Suburban. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone and do not plan on buying another Suburban in the future... which is too bad because I have been told the new models are much better.

  • Complete Junk! - 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe
    By -

Every time we turn around there is a problem, since weve had it, its been in the shop 5 times. When pulling a trailer it will not hold back on hills and the four wheel drive isnt that good. The back seats are totally uncomfortable and theres little leg room in the third row.
