Make Overview:

Chevrolet sells an impressively wide range of vehicles, from subcompact hatchbacks to huge vans and SUVs. If you're looking for a reasonably priced vehicle, odds are that Chevy will have something to fit your needs.

Chevrolet got its start in 1911. After William C. Durant had been ousted from General Motors, he joined forces with Swiss-born racecar driver Louis Chevrolet to found the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The company's first offering was the Classic Six. Introduced in 1912, this five-passenger touring sedan could top 65 mph, fast for the time. Chevrolet's storied bowtie logo -- reportedly inspired by the wallpaper of a Paris hotel room that Durant stayed at -- made its first appearance in 1914.

By 1918, Chevrolet's profitability allowed Durant to purchase enough shares in GM to regain control. Chevrolet became another division of GM, and was its largest volume division by the mid-1920s. By 1927, Chevrolet outsold rival Ford, with sales in excess of 1 million units.

In the mid-1930s Chevrolet introduced independent front suspension, which provided a smoother ride over the rough roads of the day. The 1940s saw continued success with affordable coupes, sedans and pickup trucks catering to American families, farmers and businessmen.

By the mid-1950s, Chevrolet, GM's entry-level division, had added a V8 engine, power steering and brakes, power windows and air-conditioning to its list of available features, allowing luxury for those on a tighter budget. Around this time the iconic Bel Air model -- available in coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon body styles -- proved very popular. The company introduced its alluring Corvette in 1953; the vehicle was the first mass-produced car with a fiberglass body.

The 1960s saw the unveiling of the popular, air-cooled Corvair compact, which held the distinction of being the first domestic production car with all-around independent suspension. That decade also witnessed the launch of the compact Nova, the midsize Chevelle and the sporty Camaro, the latter Chevrolet's answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. The Camaro proved an instant hit, comprising 10 percent of Chevrolet's total sales in 1967, its first year of production.

In the 1970s, Chevy responded to changing preferences by introducing small cars like the Vega and the Chevette, and by downsizing larger models such as the Caprice and Malibu. The company combated the market domination of foreign nameplates in the 1980s by rolling out the Cavalier. By the end of that decade, trucks and SUVs had started to become increasingly popular with the general consumer, and the brand's mid- and full-size models continue to this day to be some of the most popular on the road.

The '90s and the early 2000s saw the company raising the performance bar with its Corvette (notably the Z06 and, later, ZR1 variants) and reincarnated Impala SS. Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck and Tahoe/Suburban SUVs continued to be hits as well. By 2010, the Camaro had returned to the lineup after a seven-year hiatus.

Modern times have seen Chevrolet make significant improvements in its small and midsize car models and introduce the Volt plug-in hybrid. The latter provides a nearly 40-mile range on electric power alone, and adds to the company's already well-rounded lineup of cars, trucks and SUVs. Though today's marketplace is very demanding, Chevrolet seems poised to remain a power player through its affordable and innovative vehicles.

  • Junk - 2001 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

Weve had our Impala for 41,000 miles and I wish I had seen this site and others earlier. Our Impala already has had the AC Pump replaced and just recently the damn ignition cylinder locked on us!!!! There is no way that an ignition cylinder should go bad... ever... unless someone tried to break inot the car. GM needs to have a better warranty plan to cover parts and labor on items that really shouldnt break down. If something else happens to us, I think Ill take the advise of one of the angry people here and look up the Ohio Lemon Laws. Bottom line...if you get a Chevy, GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY!!! Or better yet, get a Toyota or Honda!

No extensions on sun visor nor adjustment to second row seats!! it stands straight up!!

  • Overrated Mileage!!!! - 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
    By -

Sticker posts 15/21 MPG, I have never hit anything higher than 17 on the interstate, 13 in the city. Dealer and GM cust service claims its "normal" and may improve "once broken in" (i.e. once its too late to return.) Asked about the extreme difference between sticker mileage and actual, I was told "I dont know, I dont write the stickers". Interior cheap looking with roughly moulded plastic. Seat doesnt go back far enough. Uncomfortable for a 6 ft man. Nice ride, lots of space and power. if you buy, expect no more than 13-15 MPG!!

  • Do Your Homework.... - 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

I have owned my chevy for almost four months now. It has spent EIGHT days in the shop already. It started with the "service 4 wheel drive" light. Then it started locking the doors all the time, even when it was suppose to unlock them. The dealership has replaced switchs, The TCCM, and two encoder motors. The second motor was the redesigned one. They are now telling me that a re-redesigned encoder motor is available only through district reps. In other words they may or may not have a part that will fix the problem. DONT BUY THIS TRUCK!

  • Fuel Economy/horse power - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

The new 2014 Silverado 5.3 v8 is not all its cracked up to be. I went from a 2012 5.7 Hemi Ram express to the new 2014 Silverado. Even with the increase in horsepower in the 2014, it lacks totally what I had in the Ram. To add to that I averaged 21mpg in the Ram, and I am lucky to get 16 in the new Silverado. Very disappointed.

  • Silverado Problems - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have owned the vehicle for 3 years with minor problems fixed the 1st year. I am having problems with the ABS brake system that other friends have had. Now have 62K on the truck and ABS goes on even when not needed. Sensor problem I think. Chevy should have fixed by now.

  • Pervious 2016 and 2014 terrain owner - 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

I purchased a 2018 equinox 11/30/17. I have previously owned a 2014 and 2016 terrain .Ive never had any complaints about those previous cars. I love the looks of the new equinox but the front seats are horribly uncomfortable .They are hard and the power button does not unjust the bottom tilt back enough. The seats are giving me back pain around town,I cannot imagine it on a trip. Both my terrains had the most comfortable seats I ever owned . The next problem is Im noticing the transmission at red lights, it almost feels like it stalls then when you give it the gas it hesitates to go kinda like the transmission slips. Ive only owned this car a few days todays December 2 Im really wondering if I can take it back . The start stop button is dumb if the door does not it automatically unlock. You still need your keys to unlock the car .you also cannot lock your car with the extra set of keys inside of it. What happens when your battery dies. Glad Im just a lease and not a long-term owner . Like they tried to compete with electric car this feature but fails that it only halfway works. The car also feels like its going to stall at stop signs and hesitates when you accelerate to go you can feel the transmission slip I assume. The front seats are horribly hard the bottom does not tilt far enough back. I really wanted to love this car a lot of new features are great in the looks are much better but they have some improvements to do .Owner of 2 terrains previously ,2014 and 2016 that I loved and never had one complaint. I am disappointed 😢

  • Why buy a Tahoe? - 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe
    By -

Tahoe is nice, but it comes at a high price. Right now the truck is at the dealer because Im getting water in the truck after I use the A/C or after driving in the rain. Carpets are soaked and stained. Should NOT have a 1960s problem in 2003. FIX IT! I have owned a bunch of Pontiacs and Chevys in the past and to be honest, Im done with GM! Looking at a Seqouia now and dumping the Tahoe. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Did you outsource parts from India or China???? Also had a front axle leak, knocking sound on startup and some drivetrain noises. The list goes on...

  • Grandma Car - 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
    By -

This car is okay for packing kids or if you are looking for a SUV alternative, but as far as fun and eye stopping, no way. My friends ask me why I bought such a Grandma car. Well at the time I had no other choice the car I had was way too small and this was all they had. Now I wish everyday I would have kept my old car. I have had the power steering worked on twice. Once it went out while driving on the interstate. A new gas tank for unexplainable dents from the dealer, and when you go over bumps it sounds like the front end is going to fall out of it.
