Make Overview:

Chevrolet sells an impressively wide range of vehicles, from subcompact hatchbacks to huge vans and SUVs. If you're looking for a reasonably priced vehicle, odds are that Chevy will have something to fit your needs.

Chevrolet got its start in 1911. After William C. Durant had been ousted from General Motors, he joined forces with Swiss-born racecar driver Louis Chevrolet to found the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The company's first offering was the Classic Six. Introduced in 1912, this five-passenger touring sedan could top 65 mph, fast for the time. Chevrolet's storied bowtie logo -- reportedly inspired by the wallpaper of a Paris hotel room that Durant stayed at -- made its first appearance in 1914.

By 1918, Chevrolet's profitability allowed Durant to purchase enough shares in GM to regain control. Chevrolet became another division of GM, and was its largest volume division by the mid-1920s. By 1927, Chevrolet outsold rival Ford, with sales in excess of 1 million units.

In the mid-1930s Chevrolet introduced independent front suspension, which provided a smoother ride over the rough roads of the day. The 1940s saw continued success with affordable coupes, sedans and pickup trucks catering to American families, farmers and businessmen.

By the mid-1950s, Chevrolet, GM's entry-level division, had added a V8 engine, power steering and brakes, power windows and air-conditioning to its list of available features, allowing luxury for those on a tighter budget. Around this time the iconic Bel Air model -- available in coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon body styles -- proved very popular. The company introduced its alluring Corvette in 1953; the vehicle was the first mass-produced car with a fiberglass body.

The 1960s saw the unveiling of the popular, air-cooled Corvair compact, which held the distinction of being the first domestic production car with all-around independent suspension. That decade also witnessed the launch of the compact Nova, the midsize Chevelle and the sporty Camaro, the latter Chevrolet's answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. The Camaro proved an instant hit, comprising 10 percent of Chevrolet's total sales in 1967, its first year of production.

In the 1970s, Chevy responded to changing preferences by introducing small cars like the Vega and the Chevette, and by downsizing larger models such as the Caprice and Malibu. The company combated the market domination of foreign nameplates in the 1980s by rolling out the Cavalier. By the end of that decade, trucks and SUVs had started to become increasingly popular with the general consumer, and the brand's mid- and full-size models continue to this day to be some of the most popular on the road.

The '90s and the early 2000s saw the company raising the performance bar with its Corvette (notably the Z06 and, later, ZR1 variants) and reincarnated Impala SS. Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck and Tahoe/Suburban SUVs continued to be hits as well. By 2010, the Camaro had returned to the lineup after a seven-year hiatus.

Modern times have seen Chevrolet make significant improvements in its small and midsize car models and introduce the Volt plug-in hybrid. The latter provides a nearly 40-mile range on electric power alone, and adds to the company's already well-rounded lineup of cars, trucks and SUVs. Though today's marketplace is very demanding, Chevrolet seems poised to remain a power player through its affordable and innovative vehicles.

  • Wonderful Suv - 1999 Chevrolet Blazer

Best of the big 3 SUVs. More comfortable than our Jeep or Ford. Fuel mileage averages 23mpg on the highway. 4WD is much less intrusive than either above model. Ride is better than either. The interior has lots of nooks and crannies to store "stuff". The privacy glass keeps the interior cool in summer. A nice soft ride, smooth handling, and easy manuverability. Very quiet ride with the exception of a few rattles from the plastic dash. We will be buying a second one

Traded my 2012 Grand Sport in on a new 16 Stingray. Found on a showroom in Ky at the end of model year. Great trade-in on my pristine GS as well as GM loyalty rebate and excellent dealer pricing. Absolutely love this car - my first auto on a vette. Car as $17G in options but wanted the Shark Grary Metallic exterior w/Kalahari interior. Black stinger stripe, mirrors and spoiler with transparent top w/red calipers. Absolutely gorgeous. Quieter than my GS convertible and beautiful interior design and function. The nav. system greatly improved and got 19.5 mpg on my 450 mile trip home from dealer. Feels like you are in a cockpit, much improved ride over my GS, as car feels smaller and you aim it more that steer it! Time will tell how it holds up but I am in love with this car! People gush over it. 2018 Update: Well it has been 18 mos. and 16,000 miles on the car and it has more than lived up to my initial review. We to it on a 3,000 mile road trip to Key West Florida and it performed extremely well and we got 30 mpg at times and kept it in touring mode all of the time. It is quite comfortable and I love the power it has - especially getting on the highway in the accelerator lane or passing another car with the exhaust opened. We had burlwood installed on the dash, center console, steering wheel and door control accents which, with the Kalahari interior, makes for a luxurious interior and won Best Interior Award over 350 vettes at the 2017 Corvette Show in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Also won in Columbia & Osage Beach, Missouri Shows. Have not had one problem with the vehicle and cannot wait to leave this week for another long road trip to St. George Island in the Florica Panhandle and onto Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, Alabama. This vette is a keeper. If Bo Derek was a car, I am sure this is how she would handle!

I bought my 2000 silverado Z-71 in April of 2009.It had 106,000 on the odometer. It has been a very good truck so far.Gets great gas mileage, very comfortable, great performance, great ride, handles very nice. The body is in perfect shape for the age and miles, interior is spotless, under the hood is very clean. It gets driven every day,30 miles one way to work.Just changed the fuel pressure regulator, only cost $50 and easy to do myself.NO squeaks or rattles inside. Now i have 121,000 on the odometer, and still going strong!!

  • Not Too Sure I Made The Right Choice - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

I love the looks of the Equinox, but Im a bit disapointed in the plain interior design. One reason I bought the Equinox was because of the stated fuel mileage, which was not true. I think I have a love hate relationship with the car overall. I love the room in the back seats but I dont ride back there. I feel they should have designed it with more room for the driver with more comfortable larger bottom stuffed seats. I cant say I enjoy the ride yet, my brand new one as been in the shop twice for a drift in the front end. I just bought it 2 weeks ago. The CD player stops when I back up almost like it is skipping. This is a second SUV for me, a major down grade from my Envoy.

do not like the headrest in the back seat, they obstruct the rear view

  • Best SUV - 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT

Excellent riding SUV... Smooth ride Low noise...

  • Fair - 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT

The TrailBlaser handling in snow has not been what I expected. The rearend could get away very easily. The rear stereo controls do not come with headsets. It is the only way you can listen to second station. The front drink holders are to close the dash not allowing drinks to fit right.

Bought it new and store it every winter. It is completely original down to the tires. Each spring is a kick in the pants when it is brought out of the garage. The 6 speed shifts smoothly and easily tops 100 in 3rd. On trips it always gets at least 28 miles per gallon. What more could you ask for...and when I bought it there was a $10k factory incentive so it only cost $28k new. WOW!!

We have just bought a light blue Avalance. It is an excellent for both an outdoor lifestyle as well as for someone who enjoys quality and comfort. The dealers gave us a 24 hour test drive and then a greal deal. They have a $5K cash back offer and we bought it new for under $27,000. This is a car that we plan to have for many years to come.
