Make Overview:

Chevrolet sells an impressively wide range of vehicles, from subcompact hatchbacks to huge vans and SUVs. If you're looking for a reasonably priced vehicle, odds are that Chevy will have something to fit your needs.

Chevrolet got its start in 1911. After William C. Durant had been ousted from General Motors, he joined forces with Swiss-born racecar driver Louis Chevrolet to found the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The company's first offering was the Classic Six. Introduced in 1912, this five-passenger touring sedan could top 65 mph, fast for the time. Chevrolet's storied bowtie logo -- reportedly inspired by the wallpaper of a Paris hotel room that Durant stayed at -- made its first appearance in 1914.

By 1918, Chevrolet's profitability allowed Durant to purchase enough shares in GM to regain control. Chevrolet became another division of GM, and was its largest volume division by the mid-1920s. By 1927, Chevrolet outsold rival Ford, with sales in excess of 1 million units.

In the mid-1930s Chevrolet introduced independent front suspension, which provided a smoother ride over the rough roads of the day. The 1940s saw continued success with affordable coupes, sedans and pickup trucks catering to American families, farmers and businessmen.

By the mid-1950s, Chevrolet, GM's entry-level division, had added a V8 engine, power steering and brakes, power windows and air-conditioning to its list of available features, allowing luxury for those on a tighter budget. Around this time the iconic Bel Air model -- available in coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon body styles -- proved very popular. The company introduced its alluring Corvette in 1953; the vehicle was the first mass-produced car with a fiberglass body.

The 1960s saw the unveiling of the popular, air-cooled Corvair compact, which held the distinction of being the first domestic production car with all-around independent suspension. That decade also witnessed the launch of the compact Nova, the midsize Chevelle and the sporty Camaro, the latter Chevrolet's answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. The Camaro proved an instant hit, comprising 10 percent of Chevrolet's total sales in 1967, its first year of production.

In the 1970s, Chevy responded to changing preferences by introducing small cars like the Vega and the Chevette, and by downsizing larger models such as the Caprice and Malibu. The company combated the market domination of foreign nameplates in the 1980s by rolling out the Cavalier. By the end of that decade, trucks and SUVs had started to become increasingly popular with the general consumer, and the brand's mid- and full-size models continue to this day to be some of the most popular on the road.

The '90s and the early 2000s saw the company raising the performance bar with its Corvette (notably the Z06 and, later, ZR1 variants) and reincarnated Impala SS. Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck and Tahoe/Suburban SUVs continued to be hits as well. By 2010, the Camaro had returned to the lineup after a seven-year hiatus.

Modern times have seen Chevrolet make significant improvements in its small and midsize car models and introduce the Volt plug-in hybrid. The latter provides a nearly 40-mile range on electric power alone, and adds to the company's already well-rounded lineup of cars, trucks and SUVs. Though today's marketplace is very demanding, Chevrolet seems poised to remain a power player through its affordable and innovative vehicles.

  • Best Vette Yet - 2003 Chevrolet Corvette
    By -

This is my 4th Vette (77, 84, 01, 03). For a car that supposedly has a long heritage of poor quality and unreliability, this car has been virtually flawless, as was my 01. Great gas mileage for a car so fast that itll scare you out of your boxers. Dont buy the Z06 unless youre a fanatic for speed and handling the coupe or vert ride a tad bit more comfortable, though the Z06 is by no means punishing.

  • High Praise - 2002 Chevrolet Impala

I had bought this as a used program car with 10,000 miles approx. The car has since given me no trouble! The performance, handling and design of the car are top notch. If I could by a new one, Id do it now, but my next is either an SUV or another Impala. The car is a base model with few perks, but that is less to go wrong....increasing the reliability. This car is well worth the money and the made in America fact is a plus! Thanks Chevrolet

  • I love my Maibu but disappointed. - 2015 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

Ive had my Malibu for a little over a year and I loved it from the moment the salesman pulled it up for me to test drive it. Brand new with on 3 miles. Ive been on a couple road trips and loved the smooth ride and comfort. The my link and XM radios are among my favorite features. I have always disliked the start stop function and wished it was a way to disable it. Doesnt seem to save much gas and I hate the feeling that my car has stalled. A few days ago when Id come to a stop and the feature engaged as normal, I let my foot off the brake and my radio cut off for a few seconds, then came back on. I thought nothing of it at first until it did it a second time but this time the check engine light came on and now Im alarmed. I take it into the dealership to find out the auxiliary battery that powers the features in the car while the engine is shut off is drained and needed to be replaced. Ive only had my car for exactly 13 month and this battery needs to be replaced? Luckily its under warranty but what happens when the warranty is up? Will I have to replace this battery every year? Will it cause electrical problems? I also fear that the starter will not last because of the constant starting. As much as I love this car this lack of reliability has disappointed me and makes me worry how this car will hold up after its a few years old. I know a battery is nothing and hopefully nothing else happens that is not covered under warranty.

  • Not total happy with my Maxx - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
    By -

I bought my Maxx in late 2004. Steering issues every year. GM kept replacing steering. Finally used a "redesigned" component that solved the problems. Tire rods replaced. Recently had loss of power steering. started working after I stopped the car. Chevy will not check it out at no charge. New brakes after 1200 miles. Back seat lever broke off. Driver seat power adjustments broke. Remote start quit working. Key fobs with new batteries still wont open or lock doors. Hatch back wont open and when to Chevy 3 times to get it fixed. One thing. Great handling and acceleration!! I wont buy another GM vehicle. Ever.

  • Really like our HHR - 2006 Chevrolet HHR
    By -

We were looking for an energy efficient car, but at 72 years old, wanted one with higher seats, auto, dark tinted windows, and something a little different than a small car. We are very satisfied with our HHR and the price we paid. The mileage is better than advertised. We get 34 on a trip.

  • The Last of RWD Big Cars - 1996 Chevrolet Impala
    By -

I was lucky to find this car. Low miles 75,000. No rust, all orginal. There is no other ride like a big solid RWD car. I know my wife and kid are safe. Better gas mileage that her minivan on the road. More comfort, hauls our boat like a dream.

  • My Mailubu - 2001 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

I felt sorry for this car...it was in an accident trashing the right front quarter...then it had a portable basketball hoop fall on it...all within the first 6 months I owned it... It ran fabulous for the entire time I owned it... 2 1/2 years...in fact I bought another Malibu...

  • Look out when the warranty expires - 2001 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

The vehicle was purchased new and has always been regularly serviced. Only minor problems were experienced until the milage clicked over 30,000 miles. Im now at 50,000 and trading it in for a 2003 Honda Accord. Ive already had to replace the brakes, repair a coolant leak, replace the AC/heater fan motor, replace the turn signal switch, a front headlight housing that allowed water in, and the driver-side seat belt. I agree with the previous reviewer that stated his Malibu was slowly falling apart I feel the same way. I am not hard on my cars!

  • Excellent! - 2003 Chevrolet Malibu
    By -

This is our second Malibu and I love the car. Both of them had initial small things break, like the power window, a lock etc. The dealer fixed at no charge.
