Make Overview:

Chevrolet sells an impressively wide range of vehicles, from subcompact hatchbacks to huge vans and SUVs. If you're looking for a reasonably priced vehicle, odds are that Chevy will have something to fit your needs.

Chevrolet got its start in 1911. After William C. Durant had been ousted from General Motors, he joined forces with Swiss-born racecar driver Louis Chevrolet to found the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. The company's first offering was the Classic Six. Introduced in 1912, this five-passenger touring sedan could top 65 mph, fast for the time. Chevrolet's storied bowtie logo -- reportedly inspired by the wallpaper of a Paris hotel room that Durant stayed at -- made its first appearance in 1914.

By 1918, Chevrolet's profitability allowed Durant to purchase enough shares in GM to regain control. Chevrolet became another division of GM, and was its largest volume division by the mid-1920s. By 1927, Chevrolet outsold rival Ford, with sales in excess of 1 million units.

In the mid-1930s Chevrolet introduced independent front suspension, which provided a smoother ride over the rough roads of the day. The 1940s saw continued success with affordable coupes, sedans and pickup trucks catering to American families, farmers and businessmen.

By the mid-1950s, Chevrolet, GM's entry-level division, had added a V8 engine, power steering and brakes, power windows and air-conditioning to its list of available features, allowing luxury for those on a tighter budget. Around this time the iconic Bel Air model -- available in coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon body styles -- proved very popular. The company introduced its alluring Corvette in 1953; the vehicle was the first mass-produced car with a fiberglass body.

The 1960s saw the unveiling of the popular, air-cooled Corvair compact, which held the distinction of being the first domestic production car with all-around independent suspension. That decade also witnessed the launch of the compact Nova, the midsize Chevelle and the sporty Camaro, the latter Chevrolet's answer to the wildly successful Ford Mustang. The Camaro proved an instant hit, comprising 10 percent of Chevrolet's total sales in 1967, its first year of production.

In the 1970s, Chevy responded to changing preferences by introducing small cars like the Vega and the Chevette, and by downsizing larger models such as the Caprice and Malibu. The company combated the market domination of foreign nameplates in the 1980s by rolling out the Cavalier. By the end of that decade, trucks and SUVs had started to become increasingly popular with the general consumer, and the brand's mid- and full-size models continue to this day to be some of the most popular on the road.

The '90s and the early 2000s saw the company raising the performance bar with its Corvette (notably the Z06 and, later, ZR1 variants) and reincarnated Impala SS. Chevrolet's Silverado pickup truck and Tahoe/Suburban SUVs continued to be hits as well. By 2010, the Camaro had returned to the lineup after a seven-year hiatus.

Modern times have seen Chevrolet make significant improvements in its small and midsize car models and introduce the Volt plug-in hybrid. The latter provides a nearly 40-mile range on electric power alone, and adds to the company's already well-rounded lineup of cars, trucks and SUVs. Though today's marketplace is very demanding, Chevrolet seems poised to remain a power player through its affordable and innovative vehicles.

  • My first new car ever with NOTHING wrong - 2005 Chevrolet Corvette
    By -

A total blast to drive, excellent build quality (no defects, no rattles, nada), and absolutely stunning engineering. This car is the best answer to a hard day Ive ever seen. It is my daily driver. I have absolutely no regrets for having sold my BMW 3-Series to buy this wonderful vehicle.Find a dealer with a high allocation, or you will wait months for your car. And go to Bowling Green, KY to see it built, as I did -- you will never forget that day.

  • first new truck - 2004 Chevrolet Colorado
    By -

I really like my truck. I have the Z85 with the I-5 engine(which wasnt an option when filling out this form). However, its not as comfortable to drive on long trips as I expected. The lumbar support hits me about 4 inches too high. Also, if you plan on using a childs car seat in the back of the extended cab (using the jump seats) try your car seat before you buy!!! My daughters car seat hangs off the jump seat by about 60%, which makes me relucatant to put her in the back. Unfortunately, I cant use the front seat because there is no airbag over- ride.

Ride is like a car. I have the Z-71 package. We have taken it on a 1800mile trip and it performed great in all driving conditions. We averaged 23 mpg on trip.

  • Tahoe LS with 5.3 - 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe
    By -

With the 5.3, excellent power. On the road, very very quite, solid ride and excellent cornering. With others, easy conversation at all speeds and road conditions. Excellent sound system (bose option). Minimum 18 mpg at highway speeds, and up to 20 and 21.

  • My Equinox is great. - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

For a small SUV, this is one great vehicle. Prior to owning the Equinox, I had a Tahoe. The Equinox is much more fun to drive and had more leg room in the rear. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

  • Love this car! - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

I love this car! It is a lot of fun to drive and is all the room I need. I like the flexability it offers with the second seat moving and the shelf in the rear compartment. I take that in and out as I need to. Love that feature. Gives me extra traveling space. I do not like the lack of space to store thgs from the drivers vantage. Wish it had more pockets. The flat passenger front seat is not anythg I wold use and wish instead there was a pocket there for storage. I miss having clothes hangers in the second seat. Having them in the rear compartment is not helpful to me. I still pinch myslf when I get into this car! It has been wonderful!

  • Nice truck but had problems - 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe
    By -

Had for 7 years. At 24,000 miles needed a new engine because of oil consumption. At 88,000 needed a new transfer case. A few small problems like passenger side seat wouldnt slide forward and passenger door lock wouldnt work all the time. Some times passenger side seat back wouldnt lock in upright posistion.

  • Very pleased and happy - 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

I now have 18000 miles on my 07 5.3 LT ext cab 2WD drive Silverdao. So far I have been most pleased with this new truck from Chevy. I traded in a 05 Silverado when this new model came out and I am glad I did. The ride and handling is head and shoulders above my 05 along with all the other Chevy trucks I have owned. The overall quality of my new truck from is head and shoulders above my 05. I have been most impressed with the performance when towing a trailer. Unlike my 05 which jumped to high rpms while in cruise and starting up a grade this new truck gradually accelerates pulling you up a hill. It pulls like a train. Gas mileage is 20- 22 mph if I keep it under 70. Very happy so far.

  • Excellent commuter car - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
    By -

This car is good looking, fun to drive, handles great, and can carry an a lot with the split seats down too. Im very happy with the car. I like it more each time I drive it. I have a 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette and a 2005 Z71 Tahoe. I have been happy with Chevy products and the dealership I bought them from. The Cobalt is for my daily commute from Maryland into Virginia that was costing way too much to drive my Tahoe with gas prices the way they have become lately.
