This Year's Model Updates:

After a complete redesign last year, few changes make news for 2000. Most substantial is the addition of an optional fourth access door to extended cab models. The already potent Vortec 4800 and 5300 V8 engines make more power, and programmable door locks can be instructed to unlock automatically when the Silverado is shut off. A Sportside cargo box is available on 1500 LT models, and 1500 4WD trucks can be equipped with wheel flares this year. LS and LT trucks get a standard electrochromic self-dimming rearview mirror with compass and exterior temperature display, and a soft tonneau cover is available from the factory.

Pros:
  • Fourth-door access standard on extended cab models, strong 4800 and 5300 V8 engines, programmable power door locks, disc brakes at all four corners.
Cons:
  • Cheap interior materials, sketchy build quality.

  • Very Dependable - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I bought this truck new in May of 01. I currently have 276,000 miles on it and it runs like a top. I get 17+ MPG. I regularly change oil/filter and fuel filter and keep tires rotated. Ive only had to replace the fuel pump once (although the fuel gauge was bad for the last two years). Ive put two sets of brakes, two alternators, two ujoints, one catalytic converter, two window motors. Overall, this truck has been great. Keep in mind: 276,000 miles and still counting. Recently gota a speeding ticket and officer wrote "08 Silverado" (Thats how good it looks)

  • Questionable on the quality - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I enjoyed the ride and comfort of my Silverado LT, but it seems to have a real problem in the electronics department. 4 wheel drive and fuel sensors have gone out twice ($750 fuel sensor replace). Not sure I would buy another.

I have owned two silverados in the pass few years. My first silverado was a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS. I enjoyed driving that truck while I owned it. I sold it due to gas mileage and being a college student. I ended up buying a civic for the excellent gas mileage. The gas mileage was nice and all but I soon realized I needed to be back in a full size truck regardless of gas mileage. I then purchased a 2000 Chevy Silverado Lt edition. I quickly fell in love with the truck. It was basically identical to my LS except having a few more features.

  • What problems? - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

What a wonderful decision. This truck has been reliable and trouble free since day one. Its even been rolled onto its side! Plenty of power from the 4.8 V8, and it gets decent gas mileage, around 17MPG. No major problems, other than the power steering pump needing replacement at around 34,000 mi. Seats need replacing, the brake pedal is downright soft, material quality is questionable, the steering is heavy, and the AC has a WEAK air flow on full blast, though temp is cool. Rough ride, but that can be expected. Look carefully at this. Verdict: If its reliable, then forget material quality, buy the car.

  • Me & my Chev truck - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

I bought this truck used with 111k miles. I havent had one problem with it mechanically. The previous owner who bought it new said he never had any problems before me. This is my first Chev truck after owning 3 Ford 150s. I can honestly state even if not as "pretty" as the Ford its reliability is excellent. Especially since I expected to spend money on a truck with 100+k. Regards,

I bought this truck with 130000 miles.4.8, automatic. I now have 204000. Doesnt burn or leak a drop. I love the way this truck drives and rides, especially after installing super chips, heavier front torsion bars, added another full leaf to the rear springs, Bilstiens, locking rear end. I hate: defective throttle body, noisy pistons when cold, defective fuel tank sender, defective 4wd switch, defective EVAP vent valve, defective abs unit, defective fan blower switch, defective drivers side window regulator, the rocker panels no longer exist due to rot due to bad design. The dealers will not reveal how many of these defective parts have been replaced. Should have been a lot more recalls than there were.

Truck is very comfortable to ride in on long trips. It has descend power and torque. Truck was not real reliable. Transmission went out around 100000 and i do not tow with truck.Truck could not keep tie rods on.replaced tierods and ball joint every 25-30 thousand miles and tie rod keep braking.I have never use 4wheel dr. The milage is not good. i know its a v8 4x4 but averaging 7.5 to 9 city and 12 highway is pretty dang poor. I set the cruise on the highway between 65 and 70. i live in a town of 20,000 people so there is not a lot of stop n go traffic and the closed freeway is an hour and a half away. i drive with a light foot and never let the truck get above 3000 rpm unless i am passing

  • Lots of small problems - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    By -

In about 18000 miles, this truck has been back to the dealers about 9 times for small things that should never have happened, in my opinion. Air leaks, rough idle, pulling to the right, surge, stumbling, fuel pump replacement, 2 computer reprogrammings, window replacement, spare tire lock improperly installed at build, DRL lamps burn out, steering box replacement, cold knock if use 10W30 oil, tappet noise if using 5W30 oil, etc. Worst part is dealers seem fairly incompetent. The customer has to do the troubleshooting for them and look up the tech bulletins too - they are too lazy or ignorant to do it.

  • all that glitter aint gold - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

best looking truck i ever saw,but had some problems.the slip yoke on the drive shaft goes slip clunk every time you take off.dealer says theres nothing he can do? second the stearing shaft rattled like it was going to fall off, dealer greased the intermidiater shaft on stearing. that seamed to fix that .last 4 wheel drive switch in transmission went, out dealer repaired. I spent more on this truck than my last 2 trucks and had more trouble with it.the moral of the story is just because it looks good dont mean it runs good.

  • Best US vehicle in 15 years - 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have traded cars every 24 months since 1987 until the 2000 Silverado. Ive driven it 48 months. I had differential bearing failure ($1400 - 50% GM regional repayment)at 45K miles and anti-Lok light in the winter until the system is warm. Michelin 265/70-16 SUV Terrain tires and top end Monroe shocks improved the ride to almost perfect. 16.8 C/H MPG average no better on the highway only (80+ MPH usually). Parking brake has little holding power. Replaced all 4 brakes at 80K miles and was advised that 50% material remained. Previous generations got only 30K miles, so Im making up for the bearing failure in reduced brake service.
