The Prizm is an excellent value for someone in the market for a small used car. My Prizm has been extremely reliable in the year that I have owned it. The 3-speed transmission sounds like its laboring at speeds above 55 mph(good around town however). 4-speed would be much better I think. There is decent acceleration for a small car. Back seat is cramped - a friend got in and almost couldnt get back out. Overall, Im pretty happy with my car. Paid $5999 for a loaded 01 over a year ago - cant beat the price for the quality of the car.

This is a great small car. It features good design, fine build quality, spunky performance w/ 5 speed, great mileage and reliability, plus decent space and comfort. Handling is good and improves remarkably when you get rid of the OEM tires and put on a set of good ones.

  • Great Gas Mileage/Reliable Car - 1999 Chevrolet Prizm

I have owned two Chevy Prizms. One was a 1998 automatic and the one I own now is the 1999 5 speed LSI. I liked both cars, but I found that the automatic only averaged about 30 MPG while the stickshift averaged about 32.5 miles per gallon. Both cars were very reliable for me. I would suggest either version for a budget tight driver. The Prizm was also built on the same line as the Toyota Corolla and they are basically the same car.

Bought this car new now have 105K miles. Had to reset air bag sensor 2x. Front brakes lasted until 100K miles & rear brakes not yet worked. This has been great no-frills reliable transportation. 5 Speed provides great gas mileage - consistent 38+ mph in the summer 32mph in the cold winter. 5 speed also allows for adequate acceleration when needed. Under load (> 2 people) need to delay shifting if youre merging onto a hwy. With rear passengers rear end tends to bottom out easily. Front room comfortable for someone up to 510 beyond that it gets cramped. Rear room gets tight for anyone over 4. Body still holding up well after 7 lovely winters.

This car was originally bought for my mom, and shes an older lady so she doesnt know too much about car maintenance. The engine in this car has ran 3 times with no oil AT ALL, i know it sounds impossible but its true. And i just did her tune up because her last one was at 60k miles.. the car is at 80k now. The engine in this car is extremely fuel efficient and reliable. This is an excellent first car.

IT gets good mileage and is very dependable. Ive not had to do anything but regular maintenance in the past 4 years. My only complaint is that they put the cup holders in front of the cd, which makes getting cds in/out is a hassle and sometimes when you try to grab your drink you stop the cd or change the channel on the radio and stuff like that.

So far so good. Reliability is the key.

  • 2nd Prism - 1999 Chevrolet Prizm

This is my 2nd Prism. My first lasted 10 years with no major problems. This Prism is now 4 years old and makes noises the last one didnt. I have also had it into my mechanic oftener for wobbles at higher speeds, a problem which has never been completely solved. Car just dosent seem as well made as my first one. Thanks for this site to air opinions.

I bought this car after 2 Brothers of mine have previously owned Prizms. I bought it because it is a Toyota Corolla that is 2 grand cheaper. Same engine, and basically the same car. I bought my Prizm with 34,000 miles on it, and 10,000 miles later I havent had a single problem. Its a great car.

  • Cheap, Fun, Reliable! - 2000 Chevrolet Prizm

We researched a lot of cars before buying this one seven months ago and it really paid off. We wanted a reliable used car that we could keep for a long time, so the low price combined with Toyota reliablility appealed. The fuel economy and relativly good safety rating are nice, too. Pretty comfortable, and yes, its fun to drive!
