Overview & Reviews
Like, um, seedless watermelon, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx was the end result of selective, consumer-friendly design. Seedless watermelon was created because consumers love watermelon but hate spitting out seeds. Launched in model-year 2004, the midsize Malibu Maxx was created because many consumers like the utility of wagons but want the cooler look and style offered by sedans.
Most Recent Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
Hoping to avoid any potential stigma, Chevrolet describes the Malibu Maxx as a "five-door extended sedan." Built on a lengthened version of GM's Epsilon platform, the Maxx has a hatch-type rear door and a glass roof over the rear seat. And unlike the sedan that offers both four- and six-cylinder engines, the Maxx comes with V6 power only.
Its hatchback design makes loading the Chevy Malibu Maxx effortless. The rear cargo area has 22.8 cubic feet of space available (about 8 more than the average midsize sedan's trunk) and folding down the rear seats opens up 41 cubic feet. Further versatility is gained by rear seats that slide forward and back -- either side of the 60/40 setup will slide independently with a 7-inch range of adjustment. Other strengths include an agreeable ride and outstanding crash test scores.
All in all, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is a great choice if you're seeking utility at an affordable price -- provided you don't take issue with its drab looks and unremarkable handling. Those seeking brisker performance can choose the SS trim (launched in 2006), which comes with a more powerful engine.
Alas, the Malibu Maxx has not been a particularly popular offering for Chevy, and it was announced that the car would be discontinued after the 2007 model year. More information about the Malibu can be found here.

This is my 2nd Maxx - 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By bradley - March 23 - 4:20 pmI traded an 05 LS ex-rental car for my new LTZ. I was already impressed with the power this car puts out, and all the nifty little features that the interior has (sliding rear seats, etc.). My biggest gripes about the car are the electric steering calibration (could be stiffer at speed), and the CD radio. The radio itself sounds great, but this design has been out for 3 model years now, and as of yet there is no aftermarket support for it. Meaning if you car does not come with XM, you cannot add one directly to the stereo itself, must be FM modded. And no MP3 support either.

Buyers Beware - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By Jennifer Davis - March 21 - 4:00 amI have had a lot of problems with this car over the years. Researching a little I discovered that many people have had the same problems. The latest problem is the engine deciding to shut off while in the middle of driving. There doesnt seem to be any clear direction as to what causes this. Within the first 3 months of purchasing the car I started having brake problems. I had to get the brakes replaced within 6 months. The "DAB" warning shows up periodically (the dealership says it is not anything wrong and they just clear it). My CD player still doesnt work (2 replacements).

lve the Maxx - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By Victor - March 20 - 11:50 pmGreat car! I cant believe how fast it is and what great gas mileage 26mpg so far(1000 miles). I am already getting people staring or head turns as I drive by. For a stock radio it really works very well, love my sunroof and the one in the back for the kids. There is a lot of room in the car and it was just recently rated as 4 stars in crash tests!! I am going to get some chrome wheels and get it tinted.

05 Maxx LT Review - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By hermaxx - March 18 - 11:10 amOnly 1200 miles...so far, so good. Considered Camry & Accord too but price was tough to beat on the Maxx (after dealer discount & rebate). The added convenience of the rear DVD for our 8 year old sealed the deal. I was impressed with solid structure and overall build quality. With all the features though, I wish they would have incorporated a compass into the rear view mirror like on other GM offerings. The "suede" seat inserts are upscale to the touch but the seats overall do seem to lack side bolstering...but overall are comfortable. I do plan on adding 17" wheels in the spring just to give it a little attitude.

06 Maxx review - 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By 4toz - March 16 - 6:33 pmI just bought an 06 Maxx and love it so far. The only problems are the rear sun shades(1 broke the 1st day) and I seem to have a fluttering noise coming from the dash area. Otherwise, I love the power to economy ratio. Itll pass cars and gas stations.

2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By Watson - March 10 - 1:50 pmMy wife and I bought it brand new. We havent had any problems since our bumper to bumper ran out. Warranty covered the rear defroster poking outside of the exterior glass (replaced rear window), the steering knock (chevy extended a recall on the electric steering up to 70k), the left rear running light (twice) and the front brake rotars warped and had to be turned at 32k (I had to fight the dealer on that one).

Finally...wow - 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By DMaxx - March 9 - 10:00 amWe researched and read for almost 3 months, trying to find a CAR that could do what our S-10 did but be able to haul 4 REAL people when not hauling cargo. Hello Maxx! Leather, automatic climate controls, remote start, adjustable pedals. I feel like a million bucks when Im driving this car. I, for one, like the styling of the Maxx, its just perfect. Im still trying to get use to a car whos front hood is visible when driving but I like the beefy look of it and, in my humble opinion, the back end is just plain sexy. Four big doors for easy entry/exit, the sliding rear seats and very appreciated center rear arm rest are fantastic.

Even used, a great car - 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By Maxx man - March 7 - 1:46 amWe bought the 2004 Maxx with about 34,000 miles and actually have put less than average mileage since. However, the car continues to please with excellent performance, amazing mileage for a 6 cyl engine and good interior ergonomics. The front end design is the primary downside; the new Chevy front end styling (see 2008 Malibu) would really set this car off. Ill be in need of a new car soon (this ones my wifes) so I wish Chevy would wise up and produce the Maxx for the current Malibu lineup.

Love it! - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
By L.R. - February 14 - 3:50 pmI traded my Tahoe for this car - Im going back to school, so I needed something more affordable and better on gas. I was worried about sacrificing some of the roominess and convenience that Id grown accustomed to in my Tahoe, but I dont feel deprived at all in this car. Its spacious, well designed, and flexible. I fit myself, two teenagers, a car seat, and a 50 lb dog in it easily and no one feels cramped. It also has many of the convenience features that I like, such as auto headlights. Standard ABS and traction control are also greatly appreciated. Bottom line, Im so happy to have found a fun, stylish car that fits my new budget without compomising the safety or comfort of my family.
