Model Overview:

Like, um, seedless watermelon, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx was the end result of selective, consumer-friendly design. Seedless watermelon was created because consumers love watermelon but hate spitting out seeds. Launched in model-year 2004, the midsize Malibu Maxx was created because many consumers like the utility of wagons but want the cooler look and style offered by sedans.

Most Recent Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Hoping to avoid any potential stigma, Chevrolet describes the Malibu Maxx as a "five-door extended sedan." Built on a lengthened version of GM's Epsilon platform, the Maxx has a hatch-type rear door and a glass roof over the rear seat. And unlike the sedan that offers both four- and six-cylinder engines, the Maxx comes with V6 power only.

Its hatchback design makes loading the Chevy Malibu Maxx effortless. The rear cargo area has 22.8 cubic feet of space available (about 8 more than the average midsize sedan's trunk) and folding down the rear seats opens up 41 cubic feet. Further versatility is gained by rear seats that slide forward and back -- either side of the 60/40 setup will slide independently with a 7-inch range of adjustment. Other strengths include an agreeable ride and outstanding crash test scores.

All in all, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is a great choice if you're seeking utility at an affordable price -- provided you don't take issue with its drab looks and unremarkable handling. Those seeking brisker performance can choose the SS trim (launched in 2006), which comes with a more powerful engine.

Alas, the Malibu Maxx has not been a particularly popular offering for Chevy, and it was announced that the car would be discontinued after the 2007 model year. More information about the Malibu can be found here.

Weve waited 3 years to get one of these and thus far am very happy with it. It has lots of zip, is comfortable and best of all feels very natural and at home on the road. I really appreciate the versatility of cargo/seating area. Weve experimented with hauling various things and for a car this size, we consider it a real viable alternative to an SUV (for better fuel economy) as well as being a fun car to drive. It especially handles well on corners and with the traction control should be very reliable in inclement weather. Best of all we appreciate the high safety rating (with side air bags). I feel well protected when driving. This one is a long term keeper!

This vehicle rides well and has plenty of leg room in the front as well as the rear. Handles well and I feel the ride is very good. The heated seats are a plus on cold days. The automatic start should be standard on all cars, as it is extremily convenient. The only thing is the hatchback closing. You have to excert force to make sure it is latched. The computerize display is really good, but the back lighting could be improved, not very bright. All in all I consider it one of the better cars I have owned.

Pros: Great ride, handling, steering, comfort, feature-full, very well designed, Great engine, Innovative Maxx concept, great value. Did I mention rear space? Cons: moderate wind noise at high speeds; a somewhat vague feeling in steering and suspension(i love it now) There is no match in this price range. I simply love this car -- in fact, I drive the longer routes, so that I can spend more time in it. The car handles very well, the steering is easy (the variable assist electric steering gives you comfortable and easy control of the steering), ride is quick and very comfortable, the engine hardly makes any sound, car is VERY smooth, a joyous ride (try it once).

I bought an 06 Maxx LT with 70k (43,500 mi) on it, in October 09. Its whisper quiet, fast, gets 28-30 mpg, and I love the looks. The one complaint I had was the clunking noise coming from the steering column that seems a common complaint. I sprayed some lubricant on the steering shaft (under the dash) and no more clunk! Its a great alternative to the bigger SUVs and for my needs, very practical, with the folding seats, and removable rear deck cover. The 3.1 L V6 gets the job done quite nicely. Love it!

Been very happy with it. Only thing I wish I could add is remote start and heated seats. When you buy one in WI they come standard but this car was a rental in Florida. Dont they want heated seats too?

This car is great for those with babies, and dont want a minivan or SUV. Because the rear seats slide forward and backwards, you can place a rear facing baby seat without losing legroom for the front passengers. With the seats all the way back there is still room in the trunk for a baby stroller plus a trip to the grocery store.

I just drove over 3000 miles on a trip and averaged 31 mpg. Most of the trip was with the AC ON. Had all the pickup when necessary. A very confortable car to drive. With XM radio, made the trip even better.

Leased 04 reasonable terms & pricing. Choose this vehicle for mileage rating & cargo space needed for work purposes. It has delivered both. I have been able to haul up two 8 foot ladders, and all necessary paint supplies that I normally would have used my conversion van for. The car averages 26.4 miles a gallon, combined city & hwy driving. All seats have ample leg room, the rear seats recline. There are plenty of extra feature options available. I have enjoyed my remote sunroof, remote starter, rear seat has stereo entertain center, w adapters for a portable cd or dvd player. Cons: car sits very low to ground, pass rv mirror is convex distorts view

  • The best car Ive ever had! - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

After always buying the Euro imports, I almost died when I bought this car! Our first Chevy! But I saw it in a lot and immediately was drawn to it. For the cost of what we paid and for what weve got, were very happy. Its a great family car.
