Model Overview:

Like, um, seedless watermelon, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx was the end result of selective, consumer-friendly design. Seedless watermelon was created because consumers love watermelon but hate spitting out seeds. Launched in model-year 2004, the midsize Malibu Maxx was created because many consumers like the utility of wagons but want the cooler look and style offered by sedans.

Hoping to avoid any potential stigma, Chevrolet describes the Malibu Maxx as a "five-door extended sedan." Built on a lengthened version of GM's Epsilon platform, the Maxx has a hatch-type rear door and a glass roof over the rear seat. And unlike the sedan that offers both four- and six-cylinder engines, the Maxx comes with V6 power only.

Its hatchback design makes loading the Chevy Malibu Maxx effortless. The rear cargo area has 22.8 cubic feet of space available (about 8 more than the average midsize sedan's trunk) and folding down the rear seats opens up 41 cubic feet. Further versatility is gained by rear seats that slide forward and back -- either side of the 60/40 setup will slide independently with a 7-inch range of adjustment. Other strengths include an agreeable ride and outstanding crash test scores.

All in all, the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is a great choice if you're seeking utility at an affordable price -- provided you don't take issue with its drab looks and unremarkable handling. Those seeking brisker performance can choose the SS trim (launched in 2006), which comes with a more powerful engine.

Alas, the Malibu Maxx has not been a particularly popular offering for Chevy, and it was announced that the car would be discontinued after the 2007 model year. More information about the Malibu can be found here.

This car has proven to be reliable and capable performer. I average 23 mpg in town. My wife drives an X5 BMW and we take the Malibu Max on trips because on comfort, mileage and rear DVD player.I have had only one return to service for faulty rear deck supports. I am very happy with the build quality and performance of this car.

We have always had either large vehicles or sports cars , this vehicle fits both of our needs and is fun to drive. We did have a problem with the head rests but all you have to do is take them out and turn them around, very comfortable and pretty fast

I love the the car what more can I say! Chevy has hit it on the mark. I had several Toyotas and was a bit worried about going to a Chevy, but no regrets here at all. I bet if more people test drove this car there would be a ton more sold!

  • Great to the MAXX! - 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

I love this vehicle. After owning Honda Accords and Nissan Maximas for years, my wife and I were looking at small SUVs. However, the insurance and MPG were not up to snuff for someone with a 60 mile commute. This car gets over 30 mpg on the highway and 25 in town. It is very roomy and comfy. The backseat has more room than my mother-in-laws Town Car! Great sound system. Got a great deal and is a CPO. I teach school and the other teachers are jealous. I dont know why Chevy has kept this one a secret. Too bad it wont be back for 2008. The hatchback and adjustable rear seat are great. I love the remote start!

  • Best Bang for the buck - 2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

I bought this car while I was a salesman at the dealer. Knowing the whole product line, I knew the best value when I saw it. The car has been great. 33.9 mpg on a recent trip to Florida, great in snow. Best brakes Ive ever had on a car, great power and economy, cavernous storage space, comfortable seating and great stereo. The rear roof window shades could have been designed better, and there is a noise in the front end over bumps, other than that, no complaints, Id buy another one in a minute. Im on the road a lot in sales, and since the maxx is no longer available, my next car will probably be an Impala LT with leather.

  • I Am Happy - 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Gas mileage has been as advertised, 22 mpg in town and 31 on highway in 2 months/2000 miles with the Maxx. The adjustable pedals and telescoping wheel were necessary with my 62" frame. Driving the Maxx is much more enjoyable than my previous minivan.

  • MAXX to the Limit - 2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Just bought the MAXX this week. Love it. Kids Love it. Traded reliable Malibu for MAXX with SUV space without SUV Maintenance. Opted for the LS version and bought individual DVD players for my 2 kids at $130.00 a pop. Dont need Onstar, but can install later if need to. Cheaper than installing the DVD Entertainment System. After seeing this at the Auto Show. I patiently waited for the MAXX. SUV Space w/the feel of a car and w/out SUV Price, Gas & Maintenance.
