This Year's Model Updates:

The HHR is an all-new compact wagon based on the Cobalt platform. Its retro styling is a throwback to the '49 Suburban.

Pros:
  • Smooth and quiet ride, lots of cargo space, attractive interior, excellent visibility, versatile sound system.
Cons:
  • Weak brakes, sloppy handling, engines lack low-end pull and refinement, tight shoulder room, out-of-reach window buttons, some cheap plastics.

  • Needed new alternator at 98,000 miles - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Updates "Smooth Ride" 7/22/09 and "Needed new engine at 71,000 miles pm 8/22/09. Car would not start. Got jumped, went a mile, car died big time. Towed to dealer. $816 for new alternator. Battery is still OK. If you buy an American car new, get that 100,000 mile warranty!

  • What a Letdown - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I traded in my beloved T-Bird for one of these babies, and I could shoot myself. Yes, the car looks cool, drives well, but built flimsily. Cheap plastic interior all throughout, everything rattles. Lame window controls in center of console. Fabric stains extremely easily..even just water. Havent had it a full year and its already spotted up everywhere. If you buy one, get some seat covers right away.

  • COMFORTABLE UNIQUE VEHICLE - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Bought this HHR used with 16000 miles on it (46000 miles now). First the repairs - front stablizer bars, steering column, heater fan motor and front tie rod busings all under warranty. Front brake rotors and shoes on me. New tires. I love this car even with the repairs. If the repairs wernt under warranty I probably wouldnt love it as much. Very comfortable ride, handling for me is just fine (somewhat of an aggressive driver), love the design. This one is a 5 speed manual 2.2 liter engine and its fun to drive. When I first saw the HHR I wanted one and not disappointed with my choice. Plenty of room for cargo and seating for 4. 3 in rear seat wouldnt be comfortable.

I have had my HHR for 1 1/2 now. Very dependable. Great gas mileage. I am just under 5 3" so this car fits me perfectly. My boyfriend is 6 2"- He is comfortable in the passenger seat but he does not like to drive it or ride in the backseat due to the limited height of windshield and limited leg room. Perfect for an outdoor type family, of average height, with pets and a couple kids who live on a tight budget. Not as quiet and comfortable as my previous Lumina, but definitely low maintenance and dependable for a small family. It is fairly plain on the inside but classy on the outside. I test drove many small to mid-size SUVs prior to picking my HHR they are not made for short people!

We bought this wagon used with 38k traded a pt cruiser. Our 06hhr lt2 2.4 L has plenty of go, has all options ht. Lthr., 6 in dash cd. Sat. Pioneer radio, onstar, frt.&rear air bags. Only missing running boards. Wish we had them, the paint@ the rear doors is coming off with out them. My wife is the primary driver she travels a lot with this wagon. Carries all her stuff and room for 3 more passengers. Shes very happy. Goes through brakes. R&r frt. Links. Ghost problem with park switch, cant remove key. Suggest extended warranty, if buying used. We did has paid for it self. P. S. Electric power steering went too, also likes to go through tires too soon, must rotate often, about 10k. Now has just over 80k.

  • Ok but a few problems - 2006 Chevrolet HHR
    By -

Great gas mileage and interior space in the back, but a few problems. Seats are kind of narrow, no front storage, not the best in snow/ice being it is so light. Dash compartment broke, interior mirror falls off, and my radio comes on all by itself, you can hear the springs clunk in the winter dealer says nothing they can do about either the radio or clunking. Other than that, great space in the back, great gas mileage, full body galvanized steel so wont rust, and have had no problems passing when I need to. Both my big dogs fit in this small car where they would not in others. You get what you pay for.

  • Great Little Car! - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Ok, first off, this is a car. Its a cheap car. Its not going to be perfect. Most cars arent, especially ones this cheap. Now, for the price, I feel that its great! Ive loved these cars since they came out, and wanted one since. Beings that I was only 16 at the time, I couldnt afford one. Anyways, the only issues Ive had were the front end clunking (sway bar links, struts, and steering column replaced under warranty to fix it) and the sunroof and headliner rattle quite a bit. Crank the radio (on the Pioneer that I have and love!) and you wont notice it! Even took the car on a road trip to Florida from Michigan this spring, and it was fantastic with 3 people and luggage all over

I dont drive the car a lot. Im a Farmer and drive my truck more. Had a large issue with leaving it outside a few time in heavy rain and it flooded the floor boards, I mean water standing. Took it to the dealer they say its fixed but its been in the garage for all heavy rains since. Only have 39,000 on it now. But it gets good mpg and you dont lay down to drive it like most cars. Other than the water issue I have had only on issue they replaced the radio but all seems good now just wish I would have got the 100,000 pwr train warranty I got on my 07 silverado but that came free on it.
