This Year's Model Updates:

The HHR is an all-new compact wagon based on the Cobalt platform. Its retro styling is a throwback to the '49 Suburban.

Pros:
  • Smooth and quiet ride, lots of cargo space, attractive interior, excellent visibility, versatile sound system.
Cons:
  • Weak brakes, sloppy handling, engines lack low-end pull and refinement, tight shoulder room, out-of-reach window buttons, some cheap plastics.

I was looking for a Matrix when I stumbled on this car. The price was great for a 2006 with all the goods. The ride has a larger feel and peppy enough. Interior is comfortable with many creature comforts and options. The radio is great XM is a blast and even OnStar although not much more then a glorified cell phone is nice to have,

The retro design is appealing to this old man with desires formed in the 1960s. The 2400 engine is amazingly responsive. The transmission has a lot to do with the responsiveness. Both are smooth without the power mower sound. The entry and seating are suitable for this arthritic. We use it for short runs and errands. For journies longer than a few hundred miles, the crampedness and the small drivers legroom would become cumbersome. With 20,000 miles we had to have the rotors turned as it shimmied violently at high speed braking. I understand this has been a problem with other owners. We will see how this plays out. Being rural it is nice to have nearby GM service.

Purchased new 2.4L with 5 speed manual transmission. Fun to drive although does not inspire hard driving. Fuel economy close to EPA estimates, to achieve the highway EPA must be kept under 70 mph. Mine has the "sport" suspension, still has excessive body roll. 17" wheels a must.

  • 11 Month Update - not good - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Ok, I posted a review not long after I purchased this car. I rated it a 10. Now that Ive owned this car almost 11 months, I wish I could say the same as before. Not long after the first review, I started having electrical problems. The dealer made 3 attempts to find the problem with no results. They finally pulled codes on the 4th attempt when I finally got it in with the "TC off" light on. Then the district service manager wont authorize local dlrs to attempt to fix my car: bought in Pittsburgh 2 hrs away. I love the car, but not the problems. Other problems: stereo, headlights, security, trans noises. I dont think Ill buy another GM. Poor dealer/GM support. Buying import next time.

  • Good Value for the Money - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Bigger than a Scion, more stylish than the PT Cruiser, this car gets looks from both teenagers and senior citizens. It is comfortable, practical, and drives quite nicely on the highway and back roads. More power would be nice, but for what it is, it is a good all around vehicle with excellent gas mileage. Good points: style, multiple airbags are a good idea, super radio for the money and fun to drive.....Bad points: thick windshield pillars make 10:00 and 2:00 visibility difficult, and low roof line makes tall drivers have to duck down to see traffic lights. I would buy another, and would feel my kids were well protected should they buy one.

  • A Better Cruiser than PT - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

My only gripes with my HHR 2LT are that: 1. The rear spoiler (which I did not order) is a *requirement* to keep rain/snow runoff off of the back glass. Its difficult to see; 2. There was no available back-up sensor. Its difficult to see when parallel parking; 3. The supercharged engine from the Cobalt is NOT available; 4. The mileage isnt great for a 4- cylinder. It would probably be better with a 5-speed automatic (like is offered in the Honda Civic...a like-priced vehicle). Other than these items, its quite a lot of vehicle for the price. Front and side visibility are great, the breaks have good feel, the controls are thoughtfully laid out. Good bang-for-the-buck!

  • HHR More for Less - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I was worried about the power or lack of according to the car mag reviews, but it is more than enough unless your pulling away from pit lane. On the freeway the HHR rides very smooth, we traded a Chysler Concord with about an equal ride, impressive for a little car. Handling is really good, as ours does have the tighter suspension option. At the grocery store the wife only has good things to say about the storage. The sound system is killer! A lot of thought went into consideration of controls and driver layout. Engine compartment is a nice package with all the lastest veriable valve timing (read no real need for preminum fuel)

  • Good for the Price - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

This is a nice, cheap alternative to a very small SUV. Good gas mileage, cheap insurance, and room to store stuff when you fold down the seat. I did have to take back to the dealer to get work done on brake rotors at only 5000 miles though, seems fine now. The gearing in the automatic is very high though, so it seems a bit sluggish unless you really punch the gas, but when you do the engine gets very noisy at high RPMs, much more so than many other 4 cylinder cars out there. This car woudl really benefit from a 5 speed automatic. Great car for the money though, as long as you dont expect the highest refinement or a silky smooth engine for the price.

  • 06 not bad - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I always like the HHRs but hate PT cruisers. I could not pass up this deal a 06 for $13000. Even through the door molding could be a little better and not so cheesy Im very happy with the car. The visability is very different but not impossible with minor adjustments to how you use vision for everyday driving. Overall very happy and glad I got it.

It looks good and people ask you a lot of guestions about (mostly} likes and dislikes. One guy said it look like a PT on steroids. Which was a good thing he said. All who have rode in it like the way it rides and its looks and a good sound system. Im getting good gas mileage also, 25 to 28 mpg. All in all Im very pleased with this small vehicle.
