This Year's Model Updates:

The HHR is an all-new compact wagon based on the Cobalt platform. Its retro styling is a throwback to the '49 Suburban.

Pros:
  • Smooth and quiet ride, lots of cargo space, attractive interior, excellent visibility, versatile sound system.
Cons:
  • Weak brakes, sloppy handling, engines lack low-end pull and refinement, tight shoulder room, out-of-reach window buttons, some cheap plastics.

I dont know another car that could have reacted as quick as my HHR did when another car slammed on brakes in front of me. Another driver said," I dont know how you missed that guy."

  • WoW, I Really Like My HHR - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Ive only had my HHR 1LT for about two weeks, but so far I havent found much to complain about. I do feel my HHR is somewhat underpowered (it has the 2.2L 4 cylinder engine). Most of my driving is in and around the city, so the lack of power dosent affect me much. I am very pleased with the fit and finish and with the really comfortable front seats. I do think the power window controls could have been better placed. My gas mileage has been between 22 and 24 mpg in mostly city driving, but I havent had my HHR long enough to evaluate whether or not this is very accurate. My overall driving and ownership experience has been very good.

This has been a pretty good vehicle so far. Just had some electrical problems. The design of the rear doors is not very good. Road grime keeps the paint peeled off back there. Rides and handles very good. Fuel mileage is acceptable. Not a replacement for the minivan, if you have a few kids. Especially small children that require a child seat. One seat takes all the space. With the folding seats, you can haul quite a bit of cargo.

Very smooth quiet ride, fit and finish very good for a G.M. car, lots of cargo space, great electronics, attractive retro design, recommend the 2LT version, which has bigger engine, stiffer suspension, and other goodies such as automatic with ABS and traction control. Also recommend larger 17 wheels with performance tires and leather seating. Cons, as the New York Times point out, needs a little more power at low end and better corning performance. They also did not like the brakes, but they seem good to me. Also power windows located in an inconvient section in front of gear shift and do not light up at night making them hard to find. All and all a neat little car that is wonderful on the road!

  • A Blast to Drive - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Recently bought my 2006 2LT and almost immediately took it on a 2,000 mile road trip. I highly recommend springing the extra $$$ for a LT w/sunroof. First, this vehicle is a blast to drive it took the switchbacks of Yosemite 20 mph over the speed limit (yes, Im bad) with no problem whatsoever. Fuel economy on the trip, which involve A LOT of mountain roads between CA and OR was 28.8mpg The negatives: I really dont mind the cup holders that others mention, but I do not like the type and quality of the materials used in the interior, pretty much all hard/cheap plastics, not worthy of this car. Im also already having to take it in to have the brakes looked at. Love this vehicle though.

  • Update to "Great Vehicle" - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I have now owned my HHR for 2 years and can provide an update. I am still very satisfied with the purchase. I get through my daily routine - and then some - without guzzling too much gas. I turn a few heads when the wheels are shined and the windows are down (which is always fun). One thing to note before I go on with my details: the American product is now AT LEAST as good as any foreign product. Take my HHR for example. Potential buyer, be advised... look at the reports!

The hhr is wonderful on mpg ( 34 on road) 27 in town. Made several long trips. Ride is not the best a little stuff but road ability is fine. Space good for 4 adults and 5 good size bags. Interior is tight for a 230# 6-3 man. The auto is excellent for city driving easy parking turning and good space behind 2nd. Seat. It would be a wonderful car for mother conducting her duties. Not fancy but simple operations.

I sold my 2005 Ram to get this little cutie as I had seen them around town. I miss the big V-8 power and sound, but the little 4 has its own punch. To date I have not spent 40.00 to fill it up. The Ram would hit nearly 100.00. I still dont get the one power drivers seat when the passenger should have a choice as well. Also the down low center cup holders are a bit inconvenient, but over all this is a pretty fun vehicle. Love the sun roof, and IPOD connection. Oh yeah, I hope they move the window buttons back to the doors where they belong, and also put lower door lock knobs to fit flush with the door. Runs good so far, and it feels lie a pretty tough engine.

  • So Far, So Good - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Ive had my HHR for a few days and put a couple hundred miles on it so far. I just got back from 6 hours of driving around in Phoenix traffic, and Im pretty happy. The ride is fairly smooth, the seats are comfortable, and the stock sound system is great when playing CDs and okay on radio, but the antenna seems weak. Its got enough power to safely merge into Phoenix freeway traffic, not an easy feat as the average in town speed is somewhere around 80 - 85 mph. Its no racecar, but it is peppy and fun to drive. I also enjoy all the stares from people trying to figure out if its a PT Cruiser or what? If the Phoenix market is any indicator, the HHR is gonna be a hot seller.

  • Good looking and efficent - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Recently purchased a 2006 HHR 2LT model. On a ski weekend in Michigan, it handled snow fine, and our skis fit inside. I like the styling, nice ride, quality seems pretty good at this stage. People who complain about the performance and handling have the wrong perspective. I bought this car as an affordable daily driver and hauler, with fuel economy as a priority. Highway mileage is in the low 30s at 70 MPH, and the power and handling is what I would expect. I also have a Porsche Boxster S, so I recognize how high performance cars should drive. I just have no illusions that the HHR is one, it is not. For barely over $10k loaded, it is a great value, and a very suitable daily driver.
