This Year's Model Updates:

The HHR is an all-new compact wagon based on the Cobalt platform. Its retro styling is a throwback to the '49 Suburban.

Pros:
  • Smooth and quiet ride, lots of cargo space, attractive interior, excellent visibility, versatile sound system.
Cons:
  • Weak brakes, sloppy handling, engines lack low-end pull and refinement, tight shoulder room, out-of-reach window buttons, some cheap plastics.

  • Irritants - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Pick up and ride quality are good. Interior design is adequate, but irritants are a dime a dozen. Wheres the shift selector indicator ? Buzz in the fan at 1? Wind noise at 80 kmh left hand side in mirror ? And on and on. GM engineers missed the boat on the interior ergonomics. Even the Koreans have a much more ergonomic interior. The seats are uncomfortable on long hauls. Steering wheel belongs on an 18 wheeler. No hand grips at 3 passenger doors. No manual control of dash lights. That stupid light sensor should be shot.

  • Chevy HHR, all looks, - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

We were at first very excited to purchase this attractive and different vehicle. It was fun to drive and my first Chevy purchase. Shortly after, began multiple warranty problems. We have had an ac compressor go out a hub bearing replaced a shifter replaced and a huge water leak through the cowl seal. Cosmetically, the interior cant withstand even minor use without dirt showing cheap carpeting and fabrics. The railboard rubber came unglued and buckled. The paint chips easily. The radio pops, even with the upgraded Pioneer model. The third break light fried. I really like to drive the car for the exterior looks, but it isnt a reliable vehicle for a commuter who needs to use it everyday.

  • Great car! - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I have owned my HHR for one month. I am amazed with just about every feature of this car. It rides so smooth, handles well and gets fantastic mileage (around 27-32 mpg) overall. It has great power, I got the 2.4 litre motor with automatic transmisson. My HHR is equipped with the 16" wheels, which ride fantastic. I am more concerned with ride over performance. I drive about 20,00 miles a year and cant think of a better vehicle for what I do. The overall build quality of this car amazes me. It feels so solid for such a small car. The paint quality is fantastic and the interior is very tastefully done. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

I loved this car when I first saw it at one time I got 36miles to the gallon. I just came back from a 700 mile trip and at 70 miles an hour I got 30miles to the gallon. So I cant kick. It handle as nice as any car that I ever owned and I had a few .

  • Fun - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

The appearance caught my attention first. The test drive really sold me. I had driven several small cars in the shopping process, (all I have ever owned were larger cars). The HHR is fun to drive and a fairly comfortable and quiet ride. I would have liked to have a center console with storage. But other than that I really like the car.

I was looking for a Matrix when I stumbled on this car. The price was great for a 2006 with all the goods. The ride has a larger feel and peppy enough. Interior is comfortable with many creature comforts and options. The radio is great XM is a blast and even OnStar although not much more then a glorified cell phone is nice to have,

I love my new HHR. It rides like a dream. The handling is awesome. My husband drove modifieds for many years and he says the cornering ability of this car is great. It still has plenty of room in it. The design is really classy. Everyone that sees my HHR loves the look, the color, the style. I was pulled over by a police officer one day, not because I was doing anything wrong, he wanted a closer look at my car. The only thing that really took some getting used to was where the buttons were for the windows. It could use maybe one more cupholder too. I love it.

  • It is what it is. - 2006 Chevrolet HHR

The retro design is appealing to this old man with desires formed in the 1960s. The 2400 engine is amazingly responsive. The transmission has a lot to do with the responsiveness. Both are smooth without the power mower sound. The entry and seating are suitable for this arthritic. We use it for short runs and errands. For journies longer than a few hundred miles, the crampedness and the small drivers legroom would become cumbersome. With 20,000 miles we had to have the rotors turned as it shimmied violently at high speed braking. I understand this has been a problem with other owners. We will see how this plays out. Being rural it is nice to have nearby GM service.

Everyone stops us to ask where we found this beautiful car. They ask all of the usual questions , mileage, etc. We must be in our second teen years because we love this beautiful red car.

Purchased new 2.4L with 5 speed manual transmission. Fun to drive although does not inspire hard driving. Fuel economy close to EPA estimates, to achieve the highway EPA must be kept under 70 mph. Mine has the "sport" suspension, still has excessive body roll. 17" wheels a must.
