Model Overview:

Part of a growing segment of plus-sized small crossover SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox splits the difference between compact and midsize utility vehicles and offers roomy accommodations in a five-passenger layout. Like other vehicles in its class, the Equinox emphasizes style, amenities and day-to-day practicality over more traditional SUV attributes. In short, the Chevy Equinox is a fine choice for commuting to work or transporting pets, but it's not suited for towing, or anything more rugged than a gravel road.

Although the Equinox has always had a roomy interior and an easy-driving nature, the plain styling and low-quality interior materials in earlier models are none too impressive by today's standards. Later versions of this Chevrolet crossover have made big strides in quality and are available with more desirable features and engine choices.

  • 2008 Chevy Equinox Sport AWD.. Great! - 2008 Chevrolet Equinox

GM has hit their mark with the 08 Equinox Sport, most of the reviews Ive read from actual drivers (not people who write car reviews for a living Im talking people who actually matter) say that the 3.4L engine was underpowered and not overly responsive. This is not the case with the 3.6L engine this engine growls and throws you back in your seat on a whim. The interior space is actually amazing on all Equinox trims, when looking at the Equinox on the outside it looks like a really small SUV/Crossover but when inside and you start to load it up, you would never know how small this vehicle actually is. I would recommend this vehicle for anyone interested in sport, handling and cargo room.

  • Three years down the road. - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

We came from my second-hand 1996 Geo Metro 3-door hatchback dying from a major oil leak & my dads 1998 Chevy Malibu to my 2005 lazer blue with dealer installed gray pin-stripping `Nox LT. Id been lurking for year(s)searching for a vehicle to haul my WWII VFW dad & any future walking aids hed have. Regular oil changes, tire rotations & annual car wash is all it has needed (garaged for the last 2 years). The MPG was 14 in 2005 and I expect it to still be low since it only gets to run to the doctors, groceries, church and senior citizens club in a small town with 20 to 35 mph speed limits. It got a compliment this summer after its annual carwash about how pretty it was...is it new?

  • Chevy has a Winner - 2010 Chevrolet Equinox

We looked at a Ford Escape as well as a few Asian brands, but this small SUV really showed up well in quality, appearance, and fuel efficiency. I feel that the 2010 model is a vast improvement over the 2009 model. I especially liked the handling, or "fun- to-drive" feeling that this SUV provides. And we had 4 adults and 2 end tables in the vehicle after a little vacation shopping and everything fit comfortably - lots of interior space. The 4 cyl engine isnt super strong, but does fine under most uses, and we are getting over 30 mpg anytime we are going over 45 miles an hour. Dont write this off just because it is a Chevy!

  • Problems with the starter - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

I love my car but not happy with many things. First the gas mileage is horrible, I get about 13 around town and 17 highway, not good. The worst of it all I have brought it to the dealership 6 times now since April 2008 for the same issue. The car will not start, it takes about 6 times for it to finally turn over. Once it does it spits and sputters, black smoke comes out of the exhaust than my RPMs go up to 8 drop to 4 than the car idles, like it wants to die. So now its back at the dealership and they cannot replicate the issue. Finally I called GM to report this. Its just nuts they keep telling me its up to standards but Hello, I got stranded at a gas station for 40 minutes. Not happy

  • CD player has problems - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

This is my first SUV. My Equinox is fun to drive, but it reminds me of driving an old tractor - I need one of those handles on the steering wheel to get it to turn around. Drives like a truck, but still small enough to park like a car. Not bad overall. I can live with the steering issue, but the CD has serious problems. I have had it replaced twice in less than 2 months. The dealership warranty is still good on it, but that isnt very comforting.

  • Great car for my purposes - 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Its safe, comfortable albeit a bit under powered with the 4 cylinder engine.

  • Extemely rough ride - 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

If the highway is smooth as glass, my Equinox rode as smooth as any quality automobile. However, when it came to rough surface such as cracks, shallow dips or holes, the car practically beat me to death with hard jolts. I ended up with a headache. GM is proud of the new "stiff suspension" they built into the car and it sucks. I drove the car 175 miles and could take no more. I did a buy-back. After three months and low price, the dealer cant sell the car.

We bought the Equinox because we needed a car that could be towed 4-wheels-down behind our RV and, happily, the Equinox fits the bill nicely. We bought the 2.4L 2WD because we were interested in fuel economy, but the mileage that were getting doesnt really support our decision - its much poorer than we figured it would be considering the relatively low vehicle weight (about 3700 lb). The acceleration likewise was surprisingly bad. That said, were happy with the vehicle - the interior is nicely appointed with lots of conveniences, although we had to buy the LT version to get hands-free bluetooth and back-up camera. We wanted GPS as well but would have had to spend more to get the LTZ version. One surprise is that Chevy doesnt want you to maintain your own transmission fluid level, so theres no dipstick for the transmission.

  • Just what I wanted - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

Excellent SUV. Drives like a dream. Strong engine and fun to drive. Good looks also. So far at 7,000 miles no bad smells. But poor gas mileage in town (13 - 15 mpg). On the road as high as 22 mpg. But not 25 as advertised. I average no more than 18 mpg. It took over 5,000 miles to stop rattling and squeaking. Very quiet now. Feels like you sit down instead of sitting straight across or up on to the front seat (Im 6 1) when getting in. Electric steering saved me from getting hit by a truck on the drivers side. Very quick response. Back seat works great for tall people or to add more space for stuff. It would have cost $15K+ to get the extras I have. I love the sub-woofer and XM radio.

  • Disappointed - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox
    By -

I am not sure if I am driving the same vehicle as everyone else, but I am not impressed. Very cramped interior and it is ridiculous if you try to put three people back there unless they are all under 50lbs. Not roomy! Gas mileage not great. Turning radius is very poor, like parking a 18-wheeler. Window noise is absolutely horrible as well as road noise. Tires spin out in rain and it is horrible in the snow. Would not recommend. Cheaply made and designed.
