Model Overview:

Part of a growing segment of plus-sized small crossover SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox splits the difference between compact and midsize utility vehicles and offers roomy accommodations in a five-passenger layout. Like other vehicles in its class, the Equinox emphasizes style, amenities and day-to-day practicality over more traditional SUV attributes. In short, the Chevy Equinox is a fine choice for commuting to work or transporting pets, but it's not suited for towing, or anything more rugged than a gravel road.

Although the Equinox has always had a roomy interior and an easy-driving nature, the plain styling and low-quality interior materials in earlier models are none too impressive by today's standards. Later versions of this Chevrolet crossover have made big strides in quality and are available with more desirable features and engine choices.

  • It serves its purpose - 2008 Chevrolet Equinox

I first got this car because I liked the way it looked, and it was the only SUV out there at the time that was roomy but didnt feel like you were driving an 18 wheeler. The price was great too compared to the other SUVs of similar size that were available. I have not had a problem with it and I especially loved the free for 1 year OnStar service it came with. Although they skimped out on the turn-by-turn direction service. You can only ask for directions 1 time. After that you have to pay for it...go figure. I also like that you could adjust the rear seat to move further back for more leg room.

  • My Equinox is a lemon - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

I purchased my car in March of 2006. In Aug of 06, the rear differential had to be replaced with only 6300 miles on the odometer. In Nov of 07, May of 08 and Nov of 08, this car completely lost power while I was driving it. It only has 24,000 miles on it and the dealer has been unable to fix the problem although each time it had been serviced for this same problem, they seem to think that they have corrected it. This car is a potential deathtrap! It is only by sheer luck that I have not been driving 60 MPH on the highway when it loses power.

I bought this SUV in July of 05. Its a GREAT SUV! Runs great, looks great. Gas mileage isnt the best - I live in the Minneapolis area and do a lot of city driving. On average, Ive been getting around 17, 18 MPG. On the highway, best Ive gotten is 22-23.

  • Never buying GM again - 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

34,400 miles after 3 1/2 years and the the air conditioner dies. Find out the compressor is "coming apart internally." Needed a new one at over $900. Car wouldnt start. Found out the circuitry in the fuse box assembly was faulty that needed to be replaced for over $700. Factory parts falling apart because theyre GM junk. No wonder they only offered 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty. Not to mention that the front windshield collects snow so badly you need to clear it out mid-trip because the wipers just funnel it together. Turning radius is hideous as well. Basically a worthless GM vehicle.

After 8 months of driving my Equinox I am having as much fun as I did when I purchased it! I love the ride and handling and style! I do wish the gas mileage was a bit better (hint, hint Chevrolet), but I am perfectly happy with everything else. This is my first SUV and I can assure you as long as they make the Equinox, I will have one!

  • Dissapointing - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

First of all, Ive driven larger SUVs before and never with as bad gas mileage as the Equinox. Ive also had many problems with the starter, it starts when it wants to when I frequently have it serviced. The brakes are always very loud, even after getting them fixed. I frequently hear popping like noises when starting the car that was a recalled part and finally the most annoying thing is how loud it is driving on the highway, it does not keep out exterior noise, I feel like Im on an airplane.

  • Overall, a good choice - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

Bought an 06 LT FWD with 12k miles and drove it for 16 months to 44k miles. Minor complaints: huge turning radius, noisy wipers and poor center console design. Lost traction in the snow and blew a head gasket getting unstuck. Covered by warranty and no other problems. Very comfortable and roomy for a small SUV. Average economy 23 mpg. Would still own it if gas prices hadnt gone so high in the spring of 2008 (I have a long commute and replaced it with a more economical vehicle).

  • More good than bad - 2006 Chevrolet Equinox

I have had pretty good luck with my equinox, as long as you get the oil checked every 3000 miles and contiue to change the cabin filter and air filter the gas mileage is about 26 mpg. For the last 6 months though we have a musty smell in the car, up until a couple of days ago when I received my first flat tire, we went to get the spare out, and my wheel well was filled with water. I was reading one of these reviews and somebody else had the same problem, fortunatley still under warranty, it was the pressure cabin release valve cover missing, so with two days no car, it is now fixed, so maybe this will help someone else if they find the same problem. Other than that myself and grandkids love the car.

Purchased 1SD package w/ upgrades (leather package, 17" wheels, xm radio). Smooth stable ride. Steering is nimble & responsive at different speeds & situations. Engine & transmission shift is smooth. Strong V6. Rear multi-level cargo shelf is useful for groceries, tailgate party, etc. Chose leather because it is more child resistant to spills & dirt. Right sized vehicle for 3-4 people + luggage. V6 engine is compact and uncluttered so there is room to inspect belts and hoses. Oil stick, brake fluid, & air filter are readily available. Made this jump back to an American vehicle for the dollar value size, quality, & performance.

Very happy with the purchase. Flaws? Only 2 - the coffee holders stink and the vehicle needs handholds; otherwise it is a great vehicle
