Overview & Reviews
If asked to name an economical, front-wheel-drive, four-cylinder compact car, chances are the average person would come up with an import, probably from Japan. However, the competent Chevrolet Cobalt was an example of America's ability to build a decent compact automobile as well.
True, the Chevy Cobalt didn't really upset the pecking order in the compact car world; the imports, by and large, still offered better driving dynamics and interior build quality. However, the Cobalt did offer some variety. It was available as a coupe or sedan and in a variety of trim levels. Chevy also offered a specialized SS model that was, in later years, quite impressive from a performance standpoint.
Although the Cobalt wouldn't be our first choice for a used small car, it offers respectable performance and an affordable price. As such, it may merit consideration from bargain hunters, but likely won't be on the radar for more discerning small car shoppers.
Used Chevrolet Cobalt Models
There was just one generation of the Cobalt, which ran from 2005-10. It was succeeded by the Chevrolet Cruze for 2011.
The Cobalt itself replaced the long-running Chevy Cavalier, which was both smaller and of much poorer quality. The Cobalt was available as a coupe or sedan. Trim levels (depending on body style) consisted of base, LS, well-equipped LT, luxury-themed LTZ, Sport and high-performance SS.
The base and mid-trim models have mostly stood pat through the years. Apart from the SS and short-lived Sport trims, all Cobalts were powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder that initially made 145 horsepower (increased to 155 hp for '09). Transmission choices consisted of a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. Even with the base engine, the Chevy Cobalt provided decent acceleration along with excellent fuel economy.
Lower and midlevel trims were typically equipped with air-conditioning, full power accessories, cruise control and a stereo with CD player. Upper trims may have leather upholstery, an upgraded Pioneer stereo, a USB port, a sunroof and remote start. Rear disc brakes and ABS were optional except on the highest trim levels. Side curtain airbags were optional.
The most significant changes for non-SS Cobalts were the addition of standard side curtain airbags for '08, the debut of the bare-bones XFE (extra fuel economy) model that same year, and the aforementioned boost in power for the base engine.
The SS was available initially only as a coupe with a 2.0-liter supercharged four that made 205 hp, matched to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. A sport-tuned suspension, bigger wheels and sport seats were other SS perks. For 2006 the SS line was expanded to include a coupe and sedan powered by a 2.4-liter, 171-hp version of the base 2.2-liter engine. The supercharged coupe was still available, and was called the SS Supercharged to avoid confusion with the lesser SS trims.
For '08, the lower SS versions were dropped, though their 171-hp engine saw duty in the new, one-year-only Cobalt Sport. That year, the SS Supercharged was replaced by a turbocharged SS (just called the SS) making 260 hp. The following year, an SS sedan joined the lineup. These turbocharged SS models were the most desirable of the SS run.
Small Chevrolet cars have never been known for the quality of their interiors, and the Cobalt didn't do much to change this. In editorial reviews, the car received negative commentary for its hard plastics, inconsistent build quality and limited storage. On the positive side, the Cobalt's interior was nicely insulated from road and engine noise, and the front seats were very comfortable. The SS was the bright spot of the line, boasting eye-popping acceleration and truly impressive handling.

2006 Chevy Cobalt - 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt
By greenlaven - April 16 - 7:06 amVery affordable. Gas is great if you drive between 55-65. I usually drive behind big trucks to get my money worth (more mile per gallon). Comfort is great and quite inside. Havent driven the super sport, but they do look fun to drive. I almost purchase the Aveo until the dealer showed me the new Cobalt. Why not for a few bucks more? This car almost look like a Japanese car and there are lots of aftermarket parts that will make this car look real good. Overall I am very pleased with its looks and performance.

Great car - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By Melissa - April 10 - 10:00 pmYou will not find a better car for the money that actually looks good. This is my first American made car. Before I bought the Cobalt, I shopped around for 3 months and decided this was the one for me strictly on specs. Then GM announced the employee discount for everyone it was a no brainer. I find it very good on gas. Its a perfect "city car" should you need to park it in the street and has decent horsepower. I also had Lo-Jack installed, because I live in NYC, and GM added the cost of the installation to my financing for a lower rate. The Chevy sales people really work with you and not pushy at all. My overall experience with GM was great. I love my car!

Basic but Fun - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By BP - March 24 - 12:03 pmI got a base model Cobalt about 3 weeks ago and despite having nothing on my dealer "Options" form except "Floor Mats," this little ride has proven to be full of surprises. Its a quick four-banger and the standard CD player and roomy interior with folding back seats makes for many funs trips. I do think the seats are a bit stiff (probably to reduce driver fatigue) and the absence of a arm rest between the driver and passenger seats leaves my elbow searching for a place to rest. Otherwise the low sticker price and decent mpg make it a fair deal (currently 23.3 mpg). I find the new electric power stearing a bit sensitive on the expressway but the suspension gives a very smooth ride.

Fianaly good fuel economy and power! - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By ricks45 - March 22 - 10:03 amThis is the best car that you could buy in its class. This car is one of the quietest cars I have been in. Built with high quality and great fit and finish. A lot of the critics talk about the cheap interior? My car has leather heated seats that are nicer than most expressive cars. I love the no glare dash and the satin chrome interior. The car also has chrome on the guage cluster, the radio controls, also on the shifter. I dont know what they are talking about. You guys can keep your wood grain dash, or borrow your moms car. As far as the power goes it is very responsive with a good torque. If you are thinking of buying this car go drive the competition and then drive the Cobalt.

07 Cobalt - 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt
By poochie - March 17 - 6:00 pmI really enjoy my Cobalt so far but have only owned it for 1 week and havent had a chance to take it on a long trip. I have only been getting around 20 miles per gallon in town which is a big disappointment to me because I was told this vehicle would get around 25 miles per gallon for in town driving.

2006 Cobalt LT review - 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt
By GAM - February 23 - 10:00 amI have owned my Cobalt since Sept. I do think the gas mileage could be better for it being an economy car. I also think the trunk opening is horrible, you have a hard time getting anything in or out. Once its in there the size of the trunk is decent though. I think the steering is odd. I feel like I am all over the road in it . I had a BMW before this so I am not sure if I am just used to that steering or not. I do like the body style look and the interior is fun, gets a lot of compliments. Stereo is good. The option package I have is great. It has everything the BMW had minus a moonroof. Overall its an OK car. I wouldnt buy another one and recomending it to others I am not sure about.

Great Little Car!! - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By Rick C. - February 21 - 3:10 amI downsized from a 2003 Acura TL, so I expected to be very disappointed with this car. Boy was I wrong! This is a great little car for less than half the cost of my Acura. Performance is peppy (much better than the Sentra and Lancer that I comparison shoppped). The ride is compliant and very quiet (in fact, the noise level is on a par with my Acura!). The automatic is smooth and the amenities are amazing at this price (power everything, nice wheels, keyless entry, "driver command center" that bests my Acuras information-providing capablities, etc.). Fit and finish is excellent (amazingly so, at this price point) and gas mileage is extraordinary. I am truly impressed with what Chevy has done

Great Sporty Car - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By Cie1416 - February 18 - 9:56 amThis is a great low priced car for new drivers and old alike. I love the sporty feel and the surprising power of this vehicle. I took it from NJ to NC and it was excellent on gas. The OnStar feature is great and I suggest you upgrade to the directions and connections. Thank you GM for an affordable and reliable new car! Its so fun to drive

Nice economy car - 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
By vr1000 - February 16 - 7:00 pmI wanted to buy a small economy car that would be reliable and good for commuting and that was inexpensive. I paid $14,200 including sales tax for my Cobalt. You cant touch a Corolla or a Civic for that price. The Cobalt is reasonably peppy, turns well, brakes well and feels very solidly built. The clutch feel and shifter are excellent. The only beefs I have are the cup holders are right in front of the heating and A/C controls and the trunk lid is high so its a little hard to see when backing up.
