This car holds the road! It is fun to drive and effortless. Miles sail by without exertion with pure fun handling of the road. The bad weather has not been a challenge using common sense. The interior is comfortable and was upgraded in later years - but it is a shame this vehicle was discontinued.

This is a great driving car and still looks good. It is the worst mechanical nightmare ever designed. The engine has been rebuilt 2X by Cadillac at no charge after the warranty because they were so embarrassed. Every repair is serious, frequent and costly. Truly an engineers disaster. Should never have been made.

The transmission shifts constantly the engine leaks oil the brakes squeak, the vehicle performs horrible when cold. All of the other things about this car I have read were true. Save yourself the trouble and stay away from these vehicles.

Ive had my 01 Catera since purchasing it new in 9/01. I traded a 97 Catera that had developed several problems a local Cadillac dealer did not satisfactorily repair. I changed dealers and bought the 01, and basically have been satisfied during my 26 months of ownership and 26K miles. There have been a few minor problems, but the dealer has taken care of them and treated me well.

one of the better German built cars that I have driven. Compares favorably with Audi. Have had two. Handling and steering are the best qualities. It is true that the motor could have used a few more ponies, but who cares @ 220kph+ with great control. If you are going to buy one, make sure it is under 7 yrs. or 160,000 km. or make sure that the cam tensioner pulleys, timing belt and water pump have been changed under the GM recall. Otherwise, if they fail, at power, the engine is worth far more than the car to replace.

With in the last couple of years the car has held its own in repairs. Only the tranny has needed replacement in the past 3 years. But before that, everything seemed to go wrong. Tranny replaced after 3 months, new radiator and belts.

Fun entry level luxury sedan. Its a heavy little car and sucks a lot of gas to get going.

  • Whats not to like? - 1997 Cadillac Catera

My 97 Catera gets 31 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city. It handles better than my last Mercedes, and is cheaper to fix. Yes, it has had some minor issues, but so do all cars. If this is a poor quality car, I want more like it built in the USA!!

I love to drive this car. Very comfortable. Very appealing to the eye, get tons of comments. Fast, sporty, and luxurious. Ive heard many, but Bose 8 speaker sound system is definitely one of the best factory system out there. Ive had the car for over a year and only major problem has been a recall item, but I hear of some mechanical problems. Thinking of selling. But at the price they are goin for now, would recommend but beware of repair cost.
