  • High Cost to Own - 1998 Cadillac Catera

I like my 1998 Cadillac Catera a lot, when it works. I just spent $700 on the emergency brake assembly. The dealerships is asking another $1,200 to replace the oil pump. The engine coolant light comes on and off constantly. The car drives really well when everything is working on it, but I worry everyday that something else is going to break. Make sure your have a lot of extra money if you want to buy one of these.

The Cadillac Catera is an export version of the Opel Omega MV6. All U.S. Cateras were built in Germany in Russelsheim near Frankfurt/Main. Opel, the German auto manufacturer is owned by GM. Its shame that Opels arent sold here, in the U.S. since GM owns the company. Well, at least I have the chance to drive my OPEL OMEGA (Catera).

Well, first, the transmission in my Cadillac Catera has been fixed three times and still doesnt work right. It starts out sometimes in a high gear and wont shift or do anything. Also, the a/c unit has been replaced twice and now the car just wont start sometimes and the repair shop cant get it to act up to diagnose the problem. Now it occasionally will start but run rough. The worst thing about the Catera is its depreciation. I paid $17,000 for it and now its worth only $6,000, if you dont trade it in.

I have enjoyed my 2000 Cadillac Catera very much. It is trustworthy and can accelerate quickly. The only thing that bothers me about it is that in the mornings when its engine is cold it seems to not go into first gear easily.

The Cadillac Catera may be one of the worst cars ever made! Although it has a smooth drive and a sleek sexy body, the repairs on this car will drive you to the poor house. Please, dont make the mistake I did by pumping cash into this poorly made car. Go get a dependle Honda, Acura, or Toyota.

The 2001 Cadillac Catera may be the most poorly built car of all time. I had two seperate lemons involving the A/C and engine. Honestly, I loved it the first few months I had it, but the dealership and frequent problems with the car turned my feelings in the other direction. This car is total garbage.

I bought it used for $20,000 with 14,000 mi.It drove & handled great & had pep.The features were outstanding. But somehow, the constant mechanical problems tend to overshadow everything else. As a new mom, this car is not appropriate. The back seat is small and there is no storage. The cup holders stink and the glove compartment even more so. It starts very rough in cold whether(40s). I am on my 4th bose stereo because it constantly cuts out. The check light is on constantly and no problems can be detected. I am on my 3rd set of expensive tires due to cupping and slow leaks. I now have 73,000 miles and will trade before warranty runs out even w/ neg. equity

This car has given me nothing but hell since the day I bought it. From the beginning I had cooling, elctrical, and small performance problems. Ive spent over $4,000 bucks, and as I speak Im looking for another car.

This car is a fun car to drive. I have had plenty of complements on the interior and the sportiness of the car. The stereo system is amazing. The car is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned.

  • A love-hate affair - 1997 Cadillac Catera
    By -

Cadillac fiinally got it right with the new ones, then quit making them. One of the best cars Ive owned, but fraught with electrical problems, an engine that had to be replace at 40M, and ignition and air conditioning problems. In spite of it I am only reluctantly giving it up. If you can find one thats had all the bugs taken out, its a great car!
