Make Overview:

Owned by General Motors, Buick is one of this country's oldest brands, with a rich tradition of innovation that dates back more than a century. Though long known for catering to retirement-age customers with its full-size sedans, the automaker's lineup now includes SUVs and sport sedans designed to bring younger buyers into the showrooms of Buick dealers.

The company was founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, a Scottish industrialist. He built his first car in 1904; called the Model B, it had a two-cylinder engine with an advanced-for-its-time overhead-valve cylinder head design. In 1907, Buick unveiled its first four-cylinder production car, dubbed the Model D. The following year, the Flint, Michigan-based Buick Motor Company was bought by William C. Durant as part of a new company called General Motors. By 1914, all Buicks were built with six-cylinder engines and purchased primarily by upper-class professionals, thus earning the nickname "doctor's cars."

The manufacturer proved itself a trailblazer in the early 1920s when it introduced four-wheel brakes. This technology had been seen before on custom-built cars, but Buick was the first to figure out how to successfully apply it to mass-produced vehicles. Eight-cylinder Buick cars emerged in the 1930s and became immensely popular; these advanced engines received steady improvements for several years. The '30s also saw Buick's introduction of the industry's first rear turn signal to use a flasher.

Models such as the Estate Wagon and the ever-popular Roadmaster kept Buicks happily ensconced in driveways all across the nation in the 1940s. In 1948, Buick introduced Dynaflow, the first torque converter-type automatic transmission offered in U.S. passenger cars. The 1950s and 1960s witnessed Buick continuing to zoom ahead of the curve; it was among the first to offer vehicles with power brakes and steering, and 12-volt electrical systems. The marque was also behind the introduction of the first American V6 passenger car engine and introduced the Riviera personal luxury coupe in the early '60s.

On the whole, though, Buick had made its name as a manufacturer of stately land yachts such as the Electra 225. To meet the changing times, the automaker downsized its full- and midsize models during the 1970s and began offering compact and midsize sedans for the 1980s. During the latter period and into the '90s, Buick changed things up by introducing the Regal Grand National muscle car and Reatta luxury coupe and convertible. But its core product continued to be luxury sedans aimed at an older audience.

Today, Buick specializes in sedans and crossover SUVs and is modifying its philosophy in the hopes of attracting younger buyers. Luxury and class are still common themes, but newer models have European influences in their handling and ride dynamics. As such, many modern Buicks, such as the compact Verano sedan provide a more entertaining drive and more contemporary styling than people might expect from this "old" nameplate.

  • LaCrosse - quiet ride - 2005 Buick LaCrosse
    By -

The Buick LaCrosse has a very good feel for the road without making you think youre in a tight suspension sports car. The quiet ride is the most impressive of any car I have ever driven. You simply cannot hear other cars going by. The hands-off phone system lets you make phone calls by speaking rather than holding a cell phone to your ear. Compared to similar models from other companies, the LaCrosse is a bargain in the mid 20 thousand dollar range. Drive it before you buy a Honda, Toyota, Nissan or Acura.

  • So far, so great - 2001 Buick LeSabre
    By -

Bought this car Sept 2004. 8 months later, and no problems yet. Has only been in shop for routine maintenance. Roomy. Good acceleration. Nice understated looks. Decent sound system, and good handling for a big car round out a very nice package! LeSabres devalue quickly, so they make an excellent used car buy.

  • Buick Enclave - 2008 Buick Enclave
    By -

My wife had to get the Buick Enclave. We looked at the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook. We just about purchased the Outlook and then found an Enclave that just came into the dealership. Hard to believe that this is a Buick. Finally a reasonably priced car that isnt a minivan and fits our family of 7. Believe it or not my wife hated our Escalade, too big. Now she doesnt have to drive the giant bling bling to fit our family. For the price a much better choice than the Acadia or Outlook. Buick did a good job.

  • Pleasantly Surprised - 2005 Buick Terraza
    By -

I have over 6000 miles on my Terraza. I am very happy with the car overall. The kids get in easy. Heck I can get in and out very easy. And with the DVD I dont hear, "Are the there yet". The ride, the feel of the "Van" sometimes makes me forget it is a "Minivan". Average mileage 23 combined (60% highway, 40% city)

  • Another Old Reliable - 2003 Buick Century
    By -

This Century is our second Buick. We still have the first Regal we bought in 1996. It has 148,000 miles on it. Our Century is comfortable, reliable, but a little stodgy looking. No wonder our kids call them the "Old Fogey" cars. I get over 33 miles to the gallon on the highway, very important these days. The ride is pure Buick, no other car rides like these do. We have had no problems with them mechanically. Unfortunately, we will not be buying another one unless Buick goes back to the quality that was once their trademark. Gone is the leather trim, replaced with cheap plastics. The Century is reliable, safe and comfortable. I wish I could buy another instead of the cheesy LaCrosse

  • It is all that I envisioned! - 2016 Buick Envision
    By -

I purchased this vehicle after I was given one as a loaner car from the dealership. I loved it from the get go. I am a disabled veteran and had to switch to a crossover SUV, which are easier to get into. From the beautiful colors to the slick interior design and the awesome driver safety features, I love this SUV! Update: Ive had this vehicle for 8 months and still love it!

  • my view - 2004 Buick Rendezvous
    By -

Weve had a 2002 CXL and now have a 2004. Its been comfortable and relaible. We like the appearance/functionality. Guests like the back seat. Its even better on the highway than I expected. Well equipped and well built. Even with AWD, its not a vehicle you buy to go off-road.

  • Road-Disaster - 1994 Buick Roadmaster
    By -

This vehicle has been nothing but trouble since the day I bought it, It spends most of its time in the driveway because I cant afford to keep up on the repairs. I have driven it only 30,000 miles in 4 years. I have had to replace the starter twice, water pump twice, Opti-spark distrbutor system twice ($350 part) are you starting to see a pattern here, basically everything breaks twice. One time the front suspension system failed and the right wheel feel off while I was driving, luckily I didnt crash. The electrical system also has several problems, as the door locks, interior lights, lumbar support and trunk release all quit working, additionally the vehicle will not stay aligned.

  • GM comes through! - 2006 Buick Lucerne
    By -

GM, in its best days, built full size sedans with a large engine and automatic better than anyone. They seem to be back on track. This car was delivered in flawless condition and does the job it is meant to do: move five or six people very comfortably. The car is quicker than most sports cars at any RPM. It is as quiet as any car. The ride is smooth without floating. On the downside, the variable power steering is too light at most speeds. It is large, but handles mountain roads better than the vast majority of cars. Gas mileage is OK, considering its size. Buy it if you want a practical, quick and comfortable car for a relatively bargain price.

  • Worth the money - 1995 Buick Regal
    By -

This car was extremely reliable. I had very few problems. I bought the car with over 150,000 miles on it. My wife wrecked it with 210,000 miles on it. It was still running well, and finally starting to show the miles. It probably would have gone another 20,000 miles with minor repairs. The only major repair was the AC at 170,000 and a plenum. The headliner had finally started to come down as well. I would buy another.
