Overview & Reviews
BMW is an acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG -- or, in English, Bavarian Motor Works. Whatever you call it, the German-based company is one of the world's most respected automakers, renowned for crafting luxury cars and SUVs that offer superior levels of driving enjoyment.
Founded in Munich, the company began in the early 1910s as an aircraft manufacturer. BMW's current logo, designed to represent white propeller blades against a blue sky, reflects these origins; its blue-and-white color scheme also references Bavaria's blue-and-white checkered flag.
It wasn't until 1928 that production began on the first BMW automobile, the Dixi. The car proved tremendously popular, and its success helped the manufacturer weather the Depression. BMW's best-known pre-World War II vehicle was the Type 328 roadster, a supple two-seater that racked up more than 120 victories on the motorsport circuit between 1936 and 1940. Postwar BMW cars maintained this tradition, with several racing, rallying and hill climb victories.
The early 1950s saw the launch of the BMW 501, a roomy, voluptuous sedan that was resplendent with all of the hopefulness of that era. It was soon followed by the 502, which was powered by the world's first light-alloy V8, foreshadowing BMW's ongoing commitment to developing new technology. The best-selling BMW of that decade was the Isetta, a petite two-seat "microcar" typically powered by a 12- or 13-horsepower engine. The mid-'50s also saw the debut of the limited production and breathtakingly beautiful 507 sports car, which had an alloy body and used the 502's V8 for propulsion. In the 1960s, BMW sales strengthened significantly, thanks in part to the immense popularity of the 1500, a sporty family sedan.
By the 1970s, BMW was establishing itself as a full-fledged car company. It was a pioneer for many emerging technologies, including turbocharging and advanced vehicle electronics. BMW of North America was established at that time, and consumers who coveted both sports and luxury cars became loyal "Bimmer" owners. The '70s also saw the birth of BMW's three-tier sport sedan range consisting of the compact 3 Series, midsize 5 Series and large 7 Series cars and the creation of its performance M division. Though the 3 Series could be had with four-cylinder power, it was the company's inline-6 engines that developed BMW's reputation for spirited, yet highly refined performance. At decade's end, the limited production, short-lived M1 supercar debuted.
Throughout the 1980s, BMW became the unofficial poster car of yuppies, as the brand ostensibly signified one's financial success as well as a passion for driving. The elegant 6 Series coupe debuted, and the latter part of the decade saw the high-performance M division working its magic on various production models.
In the early 1990s, BMW replaced the 6 Series with the powerful (V12-powered at first) but heavy 8 Series grand touring coupe. A bit later, BMW introduced its popular Z3 roadster. The company also opened its first U.S. manufacturing plant in the latter half of the 1990s.
The 2000s brought a midsize SUV (the X5) as well as a compact SUV (the X3) as BMW joined the hot-selling segment. Since then, BMW has replaced the Z3 with the Z4, introduced the compact 1 Series, produced hybrid versions of a few models and debuted the X6 fastback crossover. The company has also expanded its empire to include Mini and Rolls-Royce and continues to build motorcycles, something it has done since the 1920s.
BMW's famous advertising slogan describes each of its vehicles as "the ultimate driving machine," and it's not mere hyperbole. Over the past couple of decades, BMWs have become the standard for performance and luxury in most of the "over $30,000" segments. With family-friendly wagons, crisp sedans, distinctive coupes, nimble sports cars and spacious SUVs offered, BMW's model roster is diverse. But its vehicles all share a common characteristic: the ability to make drivers feel gloriously connected to the road.

Pipers BMW - 2007 BMW 7-Series
By Jack Piper - November 20 - 5:07 pmThe 750 is one mean driving machine. My wife and I love it. While this is not our first BMW it is our first 750 and we would not own any other series. When driving you do not hear nor feel the outside. It takes the road like it owns it and when pick up is needed other cars are in your dust with their mouths open.

Dont keep it Past Warranty Period - 1998 BMW 7-Series
By keywestmike - November 20 - 3:46 pmThis car was originally owned by Dave Thomas of Wendys fame, he turned it in in March 2000 I bought it in May. Smoothest most fun car to drive ever. However, you must no keep it beyond BMWs Certified Warranty four years from purchase or 100,000 miles. I have 87500 miles on it now and the maintenance has been $8000.00. Apparently these cars are designed for heavy mileage but will start falling apart at age eight.

Amazing car - 2007 BMW X3
By F. Stile - November 19 - 10:25 pmI have only owned this car for 3 days but I already love, love, love it! I previously had a volvo cross country wagon but wanted to sit up higher and have more pep. This car really delivers! It is so well made and handles beautifully. The drive is smooth, the seats are comfortable with great lumbar support, and the visibility is outstanding. Really a fun car to drive.

Love it!! - 2006 BMW 3-Series
By Kathy - November 19 - 11:50 amIts been 2 months since I picked up my 325 xi and I cant believe that I waited this long to get the car! Im a former Saab owner and after driving 9-5 for 4 years (which, by the way, was a lot of fun too), I decided that its about time to make a change. Audi A4, Saab 9-3, and Volvo S-60 were on my radar before I test-drove the BMW... and thats how my love affair begins! :) Whats not to like about the car?! Its super responsive and handles like no other... try making at turn at 60 mph, youll know what I mean. Beautiful inside out, this one is a keeper!

My First BMW - 2000 BMW 3-Series
By TheDream - November 19 - 10:00 amThis is my first BMW (and seeing as though i was only 22 when I bought it, probably not my last). I had previously owned an Audi A4 2.8 and thought that was fairly sporty and had looked at various cars from the Lexus IS300 to a 98 BMW 540i 6 speed. Although the 328Ci is not quite as fast as the V8 5 series, it looks way sportier and drives more like a sports car. This car is the perfect blend of luxury, power, and holds its resale value like few others! I love it!

My Z4! - 2004 BMW Z4
By Z4 - November 19 - 9:25 amI have enjoyed everything about this car. The top goes down in 7 seconds and the two 12-inch subwoofers make music to my ears. Handling and overall features are superb.

Impressive Car - 2005 BMW 7-Series
By ppcortho - November 19 - 2:24 amIm not one who is easily impressed with automobiles priced below $100K. My new BMW 745Li, however, is different. Ive owned it for 2 months now, purchased as a CPO. Not thinking much of the exterior styling when it first debuted in 2002, Ive grown to LOVE the way the 7-series looks. The 745Li stands out from the crowd. The new 2006 750 design has a more generic, less aggressive look (front end). Thus, I had to search for a CPO. I look forward to driving the car because I almost feel unworthy of the luxury it possesses. Quite, smooth ride and hits 100 mph with ease and composure. Logic 7 stereo is great! The iDrive is not bad at all, although the improved 06 version is better.

Best car I have ever had - 2006 BMW 7-Series
By doug - November 18 - 7:23 pmFun to drive the 750il. Takes time to learn all the features. The gas mileage isnt bad for a V-8. I love the room in the back seat. The navigation system is entertaining but somewhat distracting. Same with changing the radio stations using the iDrive. No problem with the blackberry after t-mobile made some changes in the cell phone program. I have had no reliability problems.
