This year, BMW will finally offer a DVD-based navigation system, though you must still give up the in-dash CD player if you opt for nav. Besides that, rear head protection airbags (optional last year) are now standard, as is an interesting new safety item called a brakeforce display -- during emergency braking situations, an extra set of rear brake lights will illuminate to warn motorists behind you. If you order the optional adjustable ride height suspension package, it no longer precludes the addition of the sport package. On the inside, new Dakota leather replaces the familiar Montana leather upholstery (it's optional on the 3.0i model and standard on the 4.4i). Individual model changes include a body-colored tailgate handle for any 3.0i equipped with the sport or premium package, and V-rated tires and an unlimited top speed for any sport package-equipped 4.4i.

- Limited off-road abilities, less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, lousy fuel economy in the city.

By kks - January 24 - 10:00 amA very comfortable, capable and attractive vehicle. It does everything well. If I could change it in any way, perhaps more room behind the rear seats would be a plus. I would buy one again...and I rarely buy the same vehicle twice!

On the other hand, the X5 is a pratical suv, or a sporty van. Vans are the ideal vehicle of america. It carries kids, luggage, trash, new tvs, and whatever else. It also offers the driver a higher seat. Only problem though is the lack of beauty, styling and power. The X gives you the practicality of van, in a sports cars body.

By ep - October 5 - 10:00 amThe 4.4i X5 is the ultimate commuter SAV for the 21st century. Its tremendous acceleration and tight handling makes it one of the best performing SUVs. It tops the Mercedes ML class easily. The X5 can get out of ANY situation in the snow, from 2 inches to 3 feet, it is almost impossible to get this car stuck. The allwheel drive system is wonderful and makes the car stick to the road and travel deeper into corners than you thought possible for such a heavy car. If you dont mind spending the money, the X5 has the best combination of comfort, with a perfect seating position, and style, with sleak bodylines from every angle.

By Sam Gamgee - August 6 - 10:00 amI absolutely love this thing. My X5 3.0 is exactly what the doctor ordered. Handles like a German sports sedan, no SUV (this is not a car) tilt warning on the visor. If I drove my other SUV like I drive the X5 Id be wearing it as a hat. Sport package wheels give it a great look. Good amount of power, but if youre a speed demon consider the 4.4. It makes me feel great, like a taylored jogging suit.
