This Year's Model Updates:

The high-performance X5 4.6is is discontinued. The 3.0i and 4.4i receive an exterior update, as well as a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive. A six-speed manual transmission is now standard on the 3.0i, and a six-speed automatic is standard on the 4.4i. The 4.4i also receives a new 4.4-liter engine with Valvetronic and a fully variable intake system. Both models can add Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth hands-free cell phone capability as dealer-installed accessories.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, multiple drivetrain choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, poor fuel economy in the city.

  • Never question a BMW!!! - 2004 BMW X5

I actually have the 2003 model I purchased in 2002. I cant say enough about this vehicle. I live on the east coast and the past 2 winters have been heavy snow and deep freezing temps. I still went everywhere with this truck and drove it like it was springtime. The anti-lock braking system and DSC system which does not allow the truck to fish tail or roll is very impressive. However, people who are not familiar with these systems think the truck does not handle well. You have to trust the truck in an emergency. The only negative aspect is the fuel economy, mine gets 13mpg, I personally dont care the truck is awesome!!! If you cant afford it dont buy

  • Great Ride, Interior could improve - 2004 BMW X5
    By -

The cars performance and design is stellar. The main drawbacks are the fuel economy and the interior styling and functionality compared to less expensive SUVs and cars. Performance on the highway is excellent with plenty of power at higher speeds. Cornering is solid, and the responsiveness is very good. There are a lot of blind spots towards the rear of the car and I have had (and heard from others) problems with the rear hatch closing properly and staying shut - ughh. AM radio is terrible, climate control is not very good, trip computer is slightly old technology that needs updating (e.g., trip timer, real time fuel economy, etc.)

  • X5 4.8 isnt really that great - 2004 BMW X5

Its not worth the money if you ask me. Its a good car but still, the LX is better for the money.

  • Fun to Drive - Reliability Issues - 2004 BMW X5

Vehicle is fun to zip around in. The ride is stiff/sporty compared to other Luxury SUVs. The biggest problem I had with the vehicle was that its AC broke down 3 times during the 1st year. Only thing hotter than the Texas temperature was my temper during this period. To have plunked over $50K for a vehicle with an unreliable AC is unthinkable. Once this problem was resolved, I have had a very nice experience overall with the vehicle. The standard Audio system for this vehicle is a joke. Its the worst in this category of vehicles.

  • PASS ON THE X5 - 2004 BMW X5

Car is not worth the dealer hassle. My X5 lease exp. and the plan was to get another one. UNTIL my turn in exp. 2 dealers Bob Smith,& Century both said the car was perfect. I also asked the pick up dealership to precheck the car. They didnt. Finally dealer picks up the car charges $1200 for a variety of small issues. I had a fit, called up BMW,they then came up with an enitrely different list but still 1,200! If known, I could have repaired all items for alot less. I tried resolveing with BMW corporate, no response. Theyre to many other good choices out there to put up with this nonsense. I just bought the Volvo SUV and Im happy.

  • Drivings a pleasure - 2004 BMW X5

First BMW experience. Pros, Handling of the SUV is excellent. Great feel for the road and decent acceleration for a heavy vehicle. Cons, Accelerator pedal has a mushy feel. We were told it is because it is electronically controlled, not physically. Just need to get used to it. It is not one of the positive features of this vehicle.

  • I have had lots of electrical problems - 2004 BMW X5
    By -

The car electrical system has a mind of its own. I have almats crashed twice on the freeway for the wipers stopped in downpoors. The selflevel suspension inactivates on its own, the brake light and rear light and other warning messages constantly flash on computer display. The dealership dismisses problems as burnt bulbs or loose wire. The car is really dangerous and BMW refuses to replace with all kinds of lame excuses. I had a horrible experience with it. I have to sue for a new car!

  • The Ultimate Repair Experience - 2004 BMW X5

Love this SUVs styling. However it has been in the shop 7 times in 8 months for things like: broken fuel pump, transmission reservoir came unsealed , brake line reservoir broke , brake calipers malfunctioned ( twice for this includuing a week for them to figure it out), remote key access unreliable, DELIVERED with broken washer pump . Every fluid reservoir and pump has ben replaced as well as brkae calipers. I had less visits with my Ford Windstar. I am tired of hearing about its high performance and weight. This was poorly built and BMW of North America is invloved. I am sure not all X5s are like this, but have patience if you buy one.
