This Year's Model Updates:

The high-performance X5 4.6is is discontinued. The 3.0i and 4.4i receive an exterior update, as well as a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive. A six-speed manual transmission is now standard on the 3.0i, and a six-speed automatic is standard on the 4.4i. The 4.4i also receives a new 4.4-liter engine with Valvetronic and a fully variable intake system. Both models can add Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth hands-free cell phone capability as dealer-installed accessories.

Pros:
  • Rides and drives like a BMW sedan, multiple drivetrain choices, top safety scores, high-end cabin furnishings.
Cons:
  • Less interior volume than a 5 Series wagon, price goes up quickly with options, poor fuel economy in the city.

Test drove all luxury suvs. Came back to this one again & glad I did. Only criticisms--cannot have hands-free phone along with navigation & BMw Assist. Cannot have Sirius with navigation system. Also, should have video back-up system instead of just audio PDC. Only problem is the PDC needs adjustment. Great, reliable, comfortable suv (sav).

I have only 1200 miles on the car transmision is broken. BMW has offered to replace the tranmission with a refurbished one...wait list of 8 months. Dealership was not willing to help. Apparently this is a problem on this model.

  • Im on my second one - 2004 BMW X5

The first one I owned was better than this one. In the 3 years I cant imagine why there havent been any improvements....although it is hard to improve, there are some minor adjustments to be made. I think maybe the tranni is slipping or just isnt as responsive as it should be, may need bigger trani. And there are blind spots in the rear, if the mirrors arent just perfect. If you choose the navigation system... and a 6 changer cd... the cd cannot be put in the glove compartment.... but has to be in the rear.... most inconventent! The back up beeping drives me crazy, needs cut off switch thats not event related. I just seem disappointed with it a bit.

  • Overpriced - 2004 BMW X5

While BMW is a well-known name in luxury cars, the X5 falls short. Many options have to be added on with a hefty price tag. Some of the options should come standard on such an expensive vehicle. While there are some problems, the BMW is very responsive with handling and acceleration/braking.

  • 14500 mi in 9mo. - 2004 BMW X5

We have now put allmost 15k on this car since new. We ordered the car with every option avail. Love the performance, but have been to the dealer 4 times!!! for the same problem in the last 4mo. Check engine light keeps coming on, very annoying. Would look to buy something different next time. And this is our 4th BMW. Nav system is antique and does not offer in dash cd... There should be away to interface ipod or mp3 format.

  • conflicted feelings abound - 2004 BMW X5

I was more excited to receive this vehicle than any other. Now it is here I have very mixed feelings. First off: Imola Red/Nav/Floor/Sirius/comfort seats/Metal running +pedals/set of snow tires (minnesota). Comfort seats are really great, engine noise great, acceleration great. Navigation hopeless most user unfriendly system in existence. You can NOT I-pod or bluetooth phone the 4.8is. This truck is great if you do not have a family or a dog (but I do), two front passengers will be very happy. Soon as you try to load anything of substance you start to wonder why you spend 85K (taxes inclded) on it. It is a completely impractical SUV REALLY think why you want this X5.

  • Rides like a 5 Series sedan, NO WAY! - 2004 BMW X5
    By -

The X5 will leave most other SUVs in the dust including the VW Toureg, especially climbing up a twisting, winding mountain road. However, it will bounce you along like an 18 wheeler. Fun to drive, yes; on a long trip though, it is pure agony. Styling, it excels. Safety, that is one of the primary reasons for buying it. Would I do it over again, no way, not since I have driven the VW Toureg V8. Although the Toureg is not as fast, it rides like a car, handles like a sports car, and unlike the Porsche Cayenne, it has better trim, and cost tens of thousands of dollars less.

With every company making Suvs, each company is entitled to their own vision when creating their model. The X5 is an excellent vechile in the standpoint of build quality, and luxury features. The interior is nicely laid out, everything you would expect from BMW. When you drive this suv youll notice it is smooth. But, it really isnt that much fun to drive. Very average. It feels like the Grand Cherokee I used to own. Living in Michigan, you expect your suv to hold up in bad weather. The X5 is not really suited for this. Very average in bad weather. The Awd system is not suited for heavy snowfall. My GMC Yukon is much better, for much less money in these kind of situations.

The light reading "Check Engine Soon" will NOT go off. The dealership SAYS I didnt put the gas cap on correctly. Nope! Ive tried dozens of times. It is going to the shop soon. Once the A/C just stopped for few minutes. What was that?

Vehicle drives nice, holds the road well, stiff ride, nice interior. Poor electronics, radio / sound sys is so so, electronics are hard to use and program, had to have the dealer come out to program the door garage door operner, he had to call a factory number to get it programmed. backup mirror quit working last week, phone not what promiced (blue tooth comming) dont believe anything about BMW electronics, asume a F150 has better electronics. On Star system dident work today when my wife needed it. Dealership charged me $50 to program the door keys, to auto set seats and open windows, they still dont work.
